Life has no fun on high base as ULIP sales slow down

Time of India3 days ago
MUMBAI:
Life insurance companies
posted a 4.25% year-on-year increase in new
business premiums
for the April-June quarter, driven largely by private sector players, data from the Life Insurance Council shows.
The muted growth-compared to 22% growth in the April-June 2024 quarter-is due to a high base in the same period last year, regulatory impact from new surrender norms, and a softer push for high-ticket Ulip (unit-linked insurance plan) sales amid ongoing global equity market volatility, insurance experts said.
Private life insurers recorded a 5.32% increase in new premiums, outpacing the 3.43% growth reported by the state-run
Life Insurance Corporation of India
(LIC). The total premium of the industry grew to ?93,544 crore in April-June 2025 as against ?89,726 crore in April-June 2024.
LIC's growth is affected due to the changes in the minimum ticket size. Among the listed private sector companies, Axis Max Life topped the charts in terms of APE (annual premium equivalent)-annualised value of premium collected from new policies during the quarter-growth, followed by
HDFC Life
.
Axis Max Life reported 21.66% increase in new business and 23.37% uptick in regular business. HDFC Life reported 14.51% increase in total premium while the regular premium grew 10.81%.
ICICI Prudential
's total premium grew just 6.47% while its regular premium collections dipped 14% during the quarter, largely due to a slowdown in Ulip sales.
SBI Life
saw 3.3% increase in premium while regular premium was up 8.22%.
"Owing to a high base impact of Q1FY25, the spill-over effect of the new surrender regulations and a relative slowdown in sales of
ULIPs
given the volatility in equity markets is likely to drive moderated APE growth for the Life Insurers during Q1FY26," Emkay said in a report.
While insurers have seen moderation in premium growth, margins are expected to improve due to high sale of non-participating products.

Mukesh Ambani doesn't speak Marathi, try him: BJP to MNS

New Delhi: BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Thursday slammed Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray amid the Hindi-Marathi language row, saying they only beat 'poor people' for not speaking Marathi. Speaking to reporters, Nishikant Dubey said, 'You beat up the poor. But Mukesh Ambani lives there, he speaks very less Marathi. If you have guts, go to him. Mahim has a large Muslim population. If you have guts, go there. SBI chairman doesn't speak Marathi, try hitting him.' Nishikant Dubey further clarified that his earlier statement regarding the economy of Maharashtra has been misinterpreted. He said, 'There is something which I said and which has been destroyed - Maharashtra has a great contribution in the economy of this I said was misconstrued by people. But what I am saying is that we too have a contribution in the tax paid by Mumbai or Maharashtra. This has nothing to do with the Thackeray family or the Maratha. SBI and LIC, who pay tax, have their headquarters in Mumbai,' he said. Earlier Dubey strongly reacted to MNS chief Raj Thackeray's remark. Raj had reportedly instructed his party workers to 'beat but don't make a video,' referring to individuals unwilling to speak in Marathi. In response, Dubey had said, 'What are you doing, whose bread are you eating? You people are surviving on our money. What kind of industries do you have? We have all the mines in Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. What mines do you have? All semiconductor refineries are in Gujarat.' Challenging the intent behind the aggression towards Hindi-speaking people, Dubey added, 'If you have the courage to beat Hindi speakers, then beat those who speak Urdu, Tamil, and Telugu too. If you're such a 'boss', come out of Maharashtra--come to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu. 'Tumko patak patak ke maarenge'...' 'There is something which I said and which has been destroyed - Maharashtra has a great contribution in the economy of this I said was misconstrued by people. But what I am saying is that we too have a contribution in the tax paid by Mumbai or Maharashtra. This has nothing to do with the Thackeray family or the Maratha. SBI and LIC, who pay tax, have their headquarters in Mumbai,' he added. The controversy began when some traders in Mumbai were allegedly attacked by MNS workers for not speaking Marathi. The MNS had been demanding that traders and shopkeepers in the city speak Marathi, leading to tensions between the two groups. The police have been working to maintain law and order in the city and prevent any further escalation of the situation. -- ANI

Your Questions Answered: Should I surrender my life insurance policy?

Q. I am 35 years old and have invested in one LIC Jeevan Anand life insurance policy which has an annual premium of around 16000 annually for a sum assured of 3 lakhs. The term of the policy is 20 years. I have already paid the premium for 8 years. I also have a term plan for 25 years for 50 lakhs sum assured bought eight years back. I wish to stop the existing term plan and buy a new one for Rs. 1 crore for 40 years. Should I also surrender my LIC Policy? As a basic financial planning rule one should not mix your insurance and investment needs. Investing in a life insurance policy is injurious to your financial health. If you do so, you neither get adequate life insurance cover nor adequate returns on your investments. Insurance and investments are two different needs and needs to be met by buying different products. For your financial protection you need to buy a term insurance plan equal to 12-15 times of your annual income. For your investment needs please invest in diversified investment products like equity, debt and gold. In case the goal is far away, you can predominantly invest in diversified equity mutual funds through SIP (Systematic Investment Plan). As far as your present life insurance policy Jeevan Anand is concerned, this is a traditional endowment plan where the life cover is available for the whole life even after maturity of the plan. With the annual premium you are paying for this policy you can get a term plan for a very substantial amount. So stop paying premium for this policy and surrender it. It does not make sense for you to put good money after bad money. It is good that you have decided to buy a term plan for Rs. 1 crore. Please do not discontinue your existing term plan as with advancing age the premium also goes up and goes up steeply specially after 30 years of age so the premium applicable for the same amount of insurance now will be far higher than what you are presently paying for Rs. 50 lakhs existing cover. So compare if the premium of cover for one crore is more than the premium for new cover and existing cover, buy new cover for 50 lakhs without discontinuing the existing one. Please first buy the online term plan of Rs. 1 crores and discontinue the existing online term plan of Rs. 50 lakhs only after you get the policy in your hand in case you wish to buy a term plan for one crore. However, if there is not much difference in the premium, you can buy one crore online term plan for convenience to consolidate the insurance. Please furnish all the details honestly and correctly specially about your and your family's health history to ensure elimination of the chance of rejection of claim on the ground of submitting incorrect information in the event of your death. You can select any insurance company which offers a claim settlement ratio above 98% with lower premium as compared to other policies. Please buy a plain vanilla term plan. You can find out the best insurance term plan from the website of any life insurance aggregators. I am unable to understand why you want to take cover for 40 years at the age of 35 years? Are you going to be gainfully employed that long? The purpose of life insurance is income replacement so in case you do not intend to work till that age, buy life insurance till 60 years of your age which is the retirement age generally for salaried people.
