From peaks to waves: Surat woman puts India on Waterski map

Time of India6 hours ago
Surat: Having already conquered the world's seven summits, 27-year-old Anuja Vaidya from Diamond City — has now made waves in the world of water sports. The adventure sport enthusiast has become the first Indian to participate in an international waterskiing event.
Anuja, who summited Mount Everest in 2019 alongside her elder sister Aditi, recently represented India at the 2025 IWWF Asian Waterski & Wakeboard Championships, held in Thailand from June 24 to 29.
"I've been learning and practising waterskiing with my father in the Tapi river for nearly seven years," Anuja told TOI. "I believed I had the potential to compete at a higher level, so I gave it a shot. The experience was absolutely thrilling."
While Anuja has been honing her waterskiing skills in local waters using limited resources, she was surprised to learn during the event that she was the first Indian to officially compete in waterskiing at the international level. "Officials from the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation informed me at the venue — it was an unforgettable moment," she said.
Rajpal Singh, secretary of the Wakeboard & Water Ski Federation of India (WWSFI), confirmed her achievement.

"She is the first woman to represent India in wakeboard and waterski championships internationally. It's a proud moment for all of us."
To prepare for the event and acclimatise to the competition standards, Anuja travelled to Thailand in advance to train with regulation equipment. "In Surat, we practised with different gear. Competing with professional setups in Thailand was a major learning curve," said Anuja.
She successfully cleared the qualifying round and reached the final, where participants from Malaysia and Japan secured top spots.
Her father, Anand, expressed pride in her determination. "We used basic equipment for her training in Tapi. To our surprise, she performed remarkably well on the international stage."
Waterskiing is an adrenaline-pumping sport where athletes glide across water on skis, pulled by a motorboat. It demands a perfect mix of strength, balance, and timing, making it both challenging and exhilarating.

Diamondbacks ban season ticket holder for rest of season after interference during game vs. Giants

Jul 02, 2025 05:23 AM IST PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks have banned a season-ticket holder from Chase Field for the rest of the season because of 'multiple offenses' during games, including fan interference on a fly ball to the wall during Monday night's game against the San Francisco Giants. Diamondbacks ban season ticket holder for rest of season after interference during game vs. Giants The D-backs were leading 3-2 in the eighth inning on Monday when San Francisco's Christian Koss hit a long fly ball to left field. Arizona left fielder Tim Tawa tried to make a leaping grab, but the fan made the catch with his own glove, appearing to reach over the fence. The umpires initially ruled that Koss was out, but the call was overturned after review and Koss was awarded second base. The D-backs went on to win the game 4-2. The fan — who said his name is Dave McCaskill — was ejected after the incident. McCaskill went on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM on Tuesday, saying he's been ejected three times and reviewed '9 or 10' times over the years. 'While our policy is to not publicly disclose information about our season ticket holders, the Arizona Diamondbacks are making this statement due to public speculations and multiple media inquiries regarding the fan interference incident during last night's game,' a statement from the team said. "This particular fan has been involved in multiple offenses at Chase Field. Consequently, we have terminated his Advantage Member account and he is prohibited from returning to Chase Field for the remainder of 2025. 'This fan will have the opportunity to return to Chase Field in 2026 so long as he meets certain terms and abides by our Fan Code of Conduct.' McCarthy and Drake Maye in the spotlight. As of late, we saw both players and attendees at events together. More observably, we noticed something intriguing online. While Drake Maye's wife Ann Maye was posting wonderful photos from St. Lucia on their honeymoon, J. J. McCarthy's fiancée, Katya Kuropas, posted a very short but lovely message on her Instagram story. The timing was interesting and led some fans to wonder if something else was going on. Katya Kuropas shares four powerful words after Ann Maye's honeymoon post from St. Lucia On June 30, 2025, Katya Kuropas, the fiancée of Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy, posted an Instagram Story that simply read 'Keep your peace always.' The four-word note got some quick attention and mostly because it came just hours after Ann Maye, wife of New England Patriots rookie QB Drake Maye, shared new honeymoon pictures from St. Lucia. Guardians place Gabriel Arias on IL with ankle sprain, recall Brayan Rocchio from Triple-A

Jul 02, 2025 05:03 AM IST CHICAGO — The Cleveland Guardians placed shortstop Gabriel Arias on the 10-day injured list with a left ankle sprain before Tuesday night's game at the Chicago Cubs and recalled infielder Brayan Rocchio from Triple-A Columbus. Guardians place Gabriel Arias on IL with ankle sprain, recall Brayan Rocchio from Triple-A Rocchio was in Cleveland's lineup at shortstop and batting ninth for the series opener at Wrigley Field. Arias was taken off the field on a cart after getting hurt in the third inning of Sunday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The team said X-rays were negative and Arias underwent an MRI on Monday. 'It looks like we got pretty lucky," manager Stephen Vogt said. "It looks like a moderate ankle sprain. So we'll have more information on him when we get back , but it sounds like he avoided some major injury, which is great.' Arias is batting .231 with six homers and 31 RBIs in 77 games in his first full season as a starter. Arias went deep into the hole to field a grounder by Masyn Winn with one out, but caught his left spike on the grass and awkwardly rolled his ankle. The ball wound up in left field for a single. Arias immediately grabbed his leg and remained down for several minutes. Rocchio opened the season with the Guardians, but was optioned to Triple-A on May 12 after batting only .165 with eight RBIs in 35 games. In 41 games with Columbus, he hit .252 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs. This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.
