
HMRC warning as people risk fines with deadline fast approaching
His Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is issuing a last-minute reminder for the looming deadline that falls today. Self-employed individuals are being prompted to settle the second payment on account for their 2024/25 tax bill by midnight on July 31, 2025, to sidestep any late penalties.
With over 12 million people anticipated to submit a tax return and settle any due taxes this year, HMRC has implemented payments on account as a means to prevent taxpayers from facing a hefty single bill.
Taking to social media, the government department announced: "Today is the deadline for #SelfAssessment customers to make their payment on account." They encouraged taxpayers to "pay online or via the HMRC app." This comes after recent news of a £200 payment for state pensioners born before 1959 to be made soon.
These interim payments are mandatory for customers whose previous self-assessment bill exceeded £1,000, or for those who had less than 80% of their tax collected through PAYE. Each instalment amounts to half of the previous year's tax liability, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Failure to pay up will trigger automatic penalties from HMRC. The requirement to file self-assessment returns extends to self-employed professionals, high-income earners, and certain parents, while most UK taxpayers have their taxes deducted directly from salaries, pensions, or savings and do not need to complete a return.
HMRC advises anyone struggling to meet their tax obligations to get in touch promptly. It may be possible to arrange a payment plan that distributes the cost over a period, helping to dodge additional fines.
Known as a Time to Pay arrangement, this option requires individuals to have their relevant tax reference number, such as the unique tax reference, and UK bank account details where they're authorised to set up a Direct Debit.
The Government has unveiled new services for those who pay tax through Self Assessment, aimed at streamlining the process and making it more user-friendly.
As part of its Transformation Roadmap, released on July 21, 2025, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has introduced a range of measures designed to assist customers in their dealings with the department. These measures include:
Improvements on the Digital Self Assessment registration and opt out processes
Bringing out enhanced on-screen messages to help customers and reduce waiting times on enquiries
Fixing the online appeals process for filing and late payment penalties
HMRC is advising customers to take advantage of the summer period by filing their Self Assessment tax return for the 2024 to 2025 tax year early - potentially coinciding with the settlement of their Payment on Account.
By filing early, taxpayers will be aware of the amount they owe and could possibly reduce their next Payment on Account if there's been a drop in income. Additionally, should a refund be warranted, it can be processed more promptly.
HMRC emphasises: "Paying on time avoids any potential penalties and interest as HMRC charges a late payment penalty from the day after the deadline. Payments can be made quickly, securely and at any time via the HMRC app, which also allows customers to check their tax account."

For all parents or guardians, there's nothing more rewarding than saving for your child's future. With the introduction of the Junior ISA (JISA) in 2011, saving for your child's future can not only set them up for adulthood, but it can also equip them with a valuable tax-free windfall when they turn 18. HMRC data shows that more families than ever are using JISAs to set their children up for the future, with as many as 70,550 accounts reaching their maximum annual allowance for the 2022/2023 tax year. These figures represent a 45% increase compared to the year prior, and underline the value that Junior ISAs can hold for parents. Crucially, Junior ISA holders will not pay tax on interest on the cash that's saved, and any dividends that are paid out within a JISA are also entirely tax-free. The tax-efficient credentials of the JISA are subject to an annual allowance that resets each year. But how much can you save in your JISA allowance for the 2025/2026 tax year? JISAs can take one of two forms: a Cash JISA or a Stocks and Shares JISA. While a Cash JISA focuses on allowing parents and guardians to save for their children in a similar way to a fixed-rate savings account with predictable returns, a Stocks and Shares JISA represents a stock market investment and will grow in value provided that your investments do as well. There are a few rules to opening a Junior ISA before you get started. Firstly, your child must be under 18 years of age and living in the UK (although some exceptions apply if you're a Crown servant). You also can't have both a JISA and a Child Trust Fund, but any pre-existing Child Trust Funds can be transferred into a Junior ISA. The great thing about opening a Junior ISA is that anyone can contribute to saving for your child's future. Whether their grandparents want to make a deposit as a birthday gift or friends are generous enough to get in on the act, a JISA can become a communal effort to brighten the future of a loved one. As for ownership, a JISA must be managed by the child's parent or legal guardian, but as soon as they turn 16, they'll be able to take control over the account if the provider facilitates it. Despite this, they won't be able to withdraw money until they turn 18. How Much Can I Save in a JISA? So, what is the annual allowance for a Junior ISA? For the 2025/2026 tax year, you can invest £9,000 toward your child's future in a JISA. Although the total amount that you can save in your Junior ISA allowance can change over time, it has historically been increasing. The government has also confirmed that it will freeze the £9,000 annual JISA allowance until 2030. When Junior ISAs were first introduced in 2011, the annual limit was fixed at £3,600, but this was increased to £4,368 before becoming a £9,000 allowance for the 2019/2020 tax year and is still in place today. Crucially, this allowance applies to each child you have, which can help to build significant savings for your kids as they approach adulthood. Because you don't have to pay any tax on the money your child earns through their JISA, it's possible to consolidate interest earned to build an even larger nest egg for the future. Does a JISA Affect Parental Tax Obligations? There are plenty of reasons why opening a JISA for your child can actually improve your own tax efficiency as a parent. Firstly, it's important to confirm that Junior ISA allowances are in no way linked to your own ISA allowance if you have an individual savings account. This means that the £20,000 annual ISA allowance parents have won't be reduced by saving into a JISA as well. But even better is that Junior ISAs can serve as an excellent way to lower the amount of Inheritance Tax (IHT) that would be incurred by passing your assets down to your children or grandchildren. By regularly saving into a Junior ISA, you can create a tax-free means of generating wealth for your loved ones while helping to ensure that your own assets stay below that all-important IHT threshold of £325,000. Building a Nest Egg on Your Terms The great thing about a Junior ISA is that it's a very flexible way to save for the future of your children or grandchildren. The £9,000 tax-free allowance resets each tax year, meaning that you can create a steady stream of money to build your loved ones' wealth ahead of turning 18, and there are no limits to who can contribute. Crucially, there are also very few limits on how little you can contribute, too. This means that everybody can save on their terms. Whether you can hit the £9,000 allowance each year or are better suited to saving spare change, the compounding effect of saving or investing the money over many years means that even smaller deposits can make a big difference later down the line. HMRC issues urgent Child Benefit reminder by August 31
Last year, 870,000 parents extended their Child Benefit payments, getting a £1,354 a year boost. Parents of 16 to 19 year olds should have received a letter from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to extend their Child Benefit claim if their child is staying in education or training, but if they do not apply for them to carry on, they will automatically stop on August 31 on or after their child's 16th birthday. Child Benefit is currently worth £26.05 per week - or £1,354.60 a year - for the eldest or only child and £17.25 per week - or £897 a year - for each additional child. Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC's Director General for Customer Services, says: "Child Benefit is an important boost to families. From this summer, as part of the government's Plan for Change, families will have the option to use a new digital service to pay the charge directly through their PAYE tax code instead of filing a Self Assessment tax return. The new service will cut red tape for eligible employed parents who are liable to the High Income Child Benefit Charge but those who choose to pay the charge through their Self Assessment can continue to do so. Child Trust Funds were set up for every child born between 1 September 2002 and 2 January 2011. If teenagers or their parents and guardians know who their Child Trust Fund provider is, they can contact them directly. If they don't know where their account is, they can use the free online tool on to find out who their Child Trust Fund provider is. Warning for 2.6million people facing sudden pay cuts due to ‘tax trap' – can you avoid it?
MILLIONS of savers could be hit with unexpected tax bills over the coming months. New data has revealed 2.64million people will have to pay tax on their savings in the current tax year. That's up from just 647,000 in the 2021/2022 tax year. HMRC is expecting to collect more than £6billion in tax from savers - and it means the taxman will adjust tax codes to collect it from workers' payslips. This could lead to a nasty surprise for those who don't realise they owe tax. More people are being forced to pay tax on their savings because interest rates have soared and the Personal Savings Allowance (PSA) has been frozen for over nine years. The PSA lets basic rate taxpayers earn up to £1,000 in savings interest tax-free. Higher rate taxpayers get £500 tax-free, while additional rate taxpayers don't get an allowance at all. The Freedom of Information figures, obtained by investment platform AJ Bell, found the number of basic rate taxpayers expected to pay savings tax this financial year will balloon to 1.5million. This is up from 494,000 in the 2022/tax year - meaning the number of basic rate taxpayers being forced to pay has more than doubled in just three years. The number of higher rate taxpayers affected will surge from 405,000 to an estimated 897,000. Laura Suter, director of personal finance at AJ Bell, said: 'With interest rates rising sharply, more savers are being dragged into the tax net without any policy change – it's tax by stealth. People are more likely to have breached the tax-free limit if they've moved their money to accounts with high interest rates. If you file a tax self-assessment then you will need to declare any interest earned, but for others HMRC will collect the data directly from your payslip by adjusting your tax code. It can mean that you see your take-home pay unexpectedly fall. You should get a letter from HMRC if your tax code has been changed. It will be a P800 form which tells you the taxman is adjusting your code to make up for any tax owed. How do I check my tax code? YOU can check your tax code on your personal tax account online, on any payslips or on the HMRC app. To log in, visit If you have one, you can also check it on a "Tax Code Notice" letter from HMRC. Bear in mind that you might need your Government Gateway ID and password to hand to log in. But if you don't have this you can use your National Insurance number or postcode and two of the following: A valid UK passport A UK photocard driving licence issued by the DVLA (or DVA in Northern Ireland) A payslip from the last three months or a P60 from your employer for the last tax year Details of a tax credit claim if you have made one Details from a self assessment tax return (in the last two years) if you made one Information held on your credit record if you have one (such as loans, credit cards or mortgages) What you can do to avoid paying tax on your savings The best way to shield your money is to put your savings into an ISA account. These accounts let you save up to £20,000 per year without having to pay any tax on the interest you receive. ISAs have recently had highly competitive interest rates so this is a great option if you need to save away some cash. There are five types of ISA: Cash ISA, Stocks and Shares, Lifetime ISA, IFISA and Junior ISA. The most commonly used ones are Cash, Stocks and Shares and Lifetime ISAs. A Cash ISA is very similar to a normal savings account, but with the added bonus of being able to save money tax-free. Like other savings accounts, you can opt for either easy-access or fixed. Easy access accounts let you take out your money without paying a penalty, but the rate you get is likely to change. Stocks and Shares ISAs allow you to invest into the stock market, so these are more risky but they can give greater returns if you're willing to keep your money locked away for longer. Lifetime ISAs can be used if you're saving up for buying a home or for retirement. These give you a 25% Government bonus on top of your savings per year. However it's worth noting you'll lose your bonus (and some of the cash you saved) if you withdraw your money for any reason other than retirement or buying a house. Top tips for becoming an ISA millionaire SAVING into a stocks and shares ISA can help you build wealth faster over the long term than cash savings. Dan Coatsworth, investment analyst at savings platform AJ Bell, gives his advice... Start as early as you can Time in the market is important, not just so you can ride the market ups and downs but also to let your wealth build up. Not everyone can afford to invest the full £20,000 ISA allowance each year, particularly younger people who might be on a lower salary. The trick is to start as early as possible with what you can afford to invest. Increase your contributions as you get older, such as when you get a pay rise. Maximise your contributions Try and invest as much as you can each month once you're sure all the essentials are covered. Create a budget so you can pay bills in full and clear any expensive debt, such as personal loans or credit cards. The remaining money can be used to fund your lifestyle and to top up your ISA. Be consistent with contributions Feeding your account on a regular basis means you get into the habit of squirrelling money away for your future. After a while you get accustomed to that money going into your ISA that you may not even think about alternative uses for it, such as going shopping or down the pub with your friends. Keep an eye on costs and charges Costs can add up over time and eat into your returns. Try not to fiddle too much with your portfolio as trading in and out of investments incurs transaction charges. It is important to be patient with investing, especially for someone hoping to be an ISA millionaire as the journey to build up this wealth could last for decades. Spread your risks Having a diversified portfolio is good practice for any investor and essentially means keeping different types of investments to help balance out the risk. Then if something goes wrong with one of your investments, you've got the rest to hopefully act as a cushion to minimise the pain. Diversification can involve investing in different industry sectors, geographies and asset types. For example, a diversified portfolio might have exposure to shares, funds and bonds from around the world. Reinvest dividends Companies and funds often pay dividends every three to six months. Think of these as rewards for taking the risk of owning their shares or fund units. While it can be tempting to pocket that income stream to spend on yourself, history suggests one of the biggest contributors to investment returns is reinvesting dividends back into your account to grow wealth faster.
