Councillor says Glasgow should look to Primavera Sound Festival

Glasgow Times21-06-2025

As Glasgow's Summer Sessions concerts in Bellahouston Park get underway today, Molyneux of the Scottish Greens, has called on the city to invest in a dedicated outdoor events space to take the pressure of holding major events off public parks.

(Image: Image: Newsquest) Bellahouston Park will see the Sex Pistols headline this weekend, with Sting, Simple Minds, and Stereophonics to follow over the next seven days, Crowds of up to 35,000 are expected for each show.
July will then see Glasgow Green fenced off for TRNSMT festival, which will run between the 11th and 13th.
Councillor Molyneux said the council and commercial partners should look to the success of the Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona, which takes place in a purpose-built events space called Parc del Forum, which also has dedicated bus and tram connections.

Councillor Molyneux said: "Big events bring people into Glasgow and support our global reputation as a city of music, but having to rely on Glasgow Green and Bellahouston Park to host them does have an impact on citizens who have huge swathes of their parks fenced off for weeks at a time and then have areas that are badly damaged afterwards. Bellahouston is also slap bang in the middle of a residential area and the events put big strain on public transport as well as dozens of road closures.
"The set up for Primavera Sound is totally different. It is in a purpose-built space which combines both indoor and outdoor venues that are able to support a wide variety of events all year round.
"Something similar could be done using the land around the SEC, including its massive surface car park, all the way up to the Riverside Museum. If not there, then Glasgow is not exactly short of unused land, some of which is not suitable for building on, and this could also be integrated into plans for Clyde Metro.
"If we believe parks should serve local communities as well as wanting to keep Glasgow on the musical map, I think this is something the Council and city partners should give consideration to."

Emma Raducanu breaks silence on Carlos Alcaraz romance rumours with four-word response

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Emma Raducanu has chuckled at the chatter of a budding romance with Carlos Alcaraz as Wimbledon looms. The British starlet is set to partner with Alcaraz for mixed doubles at the US Open this year, sparking whispers of a love link-up. The UK's leading lady is gearing up to take on teen wildcard Mimi Xu in Wimbledon's first round come Monday. Currently ranked 38th globally, she's homing in on the clash following her stint at Eastbourne. Still, she found herself fielding speculation about Alcaraz during her pre-tournament press briefing in SW19. Having been chums with the Spanish sensation for a good four years, Raducanu was seen hitting balls with him at Wimbledon on Friday. When quizzed about whether tactics for the US Open came up, she said: "No, it was fun yesterday. We were both on court with (water brand) Evian. "Yeah, we were just getting some volley practicing ahead of New York. Yeah, I'm really happy obviously to be playing with him. Yeah, we had a good time yesterday.", reports the Mirror. Predictably, the press conference turned to the topic she likely anticipated. On probing whether there's any truth to the romantic links, Raducanu responded with a beam, asserting: "We're just good friends." With that, the interview moderator intervened, closing down the query session, to which Raducanu mirthfully remarked: "Way to wrap up!". Raducanu and Alcaraz, both 22 years old, have formed a friendship over the years. Raducanu recently shared the story of how they became close, saying: "I've known him for years and actually in Wimbledon 2021, it was like kind of the first time I started getting to know him, and I had a good run there and then also again in the US Open in 2021." She recalled how Alcaraz's victories would motivate her to win her own matches, which often took place a day later. "And I remember he was always playing the day before me and I was playing like the second day of the round. And I would see him win and then I would have motivation to win and get myself into that position too." Raducanu also remembered Alcaraz's breakthrough win against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round, calling it a "And I remember he beat Stef [Tsitsipas] in the third round and it was like a big win, his breakout kind of win on a big stage and it was really cool to kind of, I guess, go through that tournament together and then I kept going through the US Open, but we were staying in touch for the whole time and yeah, it's nice." on a major stage. She cherished the experience of going through the US Open together and staying in touch throughout the tournament. Their friendship has endured despite Alcaraz's rapid rise to success. Raducanu said: "We have a good relationship still. He's obviously overtaken me a lot, but it's nice that we have that from a while ago." She emphasized the value of connections made at a young age, especially as fame and success can lead to new, but less genuine, relationships. "I think for all of us, we really kind of value those connections that we had from when we were young because when you become a bit more known or a bit more successful, you just find yourself reverting back to people you knew from a young age because you're like, that's a real genuine connection, because it becomes very busy and you have a lot more friends but the ones that you've known for a long time mean a lot more to you."

Shortly after kicking off their performance, rapper Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh 27, known as Mo Chara, aimed a jab at Sir Rod. O'Hanna - who faces terror-related charges - addressed the immense crowd: "Is anyone going to see Rod Stewart tomorrow night?" The question was met with boos from many festival-goers who brandished Palestine flags and donned tri-colour balaclavas and "Free Mo Chara" t-shirts. Feigning surprise, O'Hanna asked: "Wait, did I miss something?". He jibed: "He's older than Israel." It comes after Kneecap's Kneecap's Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaícame under fire after their Coachella set in April where they projected anti-Israel messages on stage. More backlash followed when videos dating back to November 2023 surfaced of them urging audience members to "kill your local MP" and claiming that "the only good Tory is a dead Tory". And last month, frontman Mo Chara was charged with allegedly displaying a flag in support of the terrorist organisation Hezbollah. Sir Keir Starmer and Tory leader Kemi Badenoch are among scores of politicians who have criticised the group's appearance at Glastonbury. Fury as Glastonbury crowd chants 'death to the IDF' during Bob Vylan set aired live on BBC Earlier today, the BBC announced that Kneecap's Glasto set would not be broadcast live. Instead, the Beeb said it would "make an on-demand version" available later today. The self-proclaimed "Republican Hoods" were also set to perform at this year's TRNSMT on July 11 but were later dropped from the Glasgow Green festival lineup due to "saftey concerns". First Minister John Swinney even waded into the row - saying it would be "unacceptable" for them to perform at TRNSMT. The band then announced a new performance at Glasgow's O2 Academy on July 8 - with tickets selling out in less than 30 seconds. We told previously how Sir Rod Stewart revealed he thinks Reform leader Nigel Farage is "coming across well" and urged voters to "give him a chance". The Maggie May singer will make a comeback to Glastonbury tomorrow night for the first time in decades. Having last headlined the Pyramid stage 23 years ago, Sir Rod will perform in this year's Legends slot, joining a long list of iconic acts who have taken on the prestigious role.
