The Broward County Sheriff's Office shared in a statement to PEOPLE on Tuesday, July 1, that the office is investigating "the circumstances that led up to the child falling overboard"Authorities are investigating the incident that prompted a father to heroically save his daughter, who fell overboard on a Disney cruise this weekend, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office.
On Sunday, June 29, the Disney Dream was returning from a four-night cruise in the Bahamas to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. During the cruise's stop at Disney's Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point in Bannerman Town, Bahamas, a 5-year-old girl fell overboard from the ship's fourth deck and was rescued by her father, who jumped in after her. The Disney rescue team immediately responded, and both were saved.
'The Disney crew was well prepared,' a representative for the Broward County Sheriff's Office said in a statement to PEOPLE. 'Clearly, their training and readiness paid off because they executed a successful ocean rescue.'
The statement continued, noting that 'while there doesn't appear to be anything suspicious, Broward Sheriff's Office detectives are investigating the circumstances that led up to the child falling overboard.'
'This family is so blessed,' the representative said. 'It's great to be able to respond to good news rather than what could have been a tragic outcome.'
'The Crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water," Disney Cruise Line said in a previous statement to PEOPLE. "We commend our crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes."
'We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests," Disney Cruise Line added in their statement to PEOPLE, "and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols.'

A passenger named Chandler, who asked to be identified only by her first name, recalled the incident for PEOPLE. 'There was some kind of commotion,' the passenger said. 'Then this awful scream from what I assume is the mother and then this massive splash.'
'It sounded like hitting pavement, nothing like if you jump into a pool, it was so loud," she added, noting that it occurred while the ship was traveling between Nassau and Grand Bahama Island.
She and her family then went to the balcony to get a better look at the commotion. Then around 15 seconds later, what appeared to be a life vest was dropped into the water. Then, over the loudspeaker, someone called 'MOB [Man overboard] port side,' and three more flotation devices were thrown in.
Chandler, who shared footage of the rescue on TikTok, said a crew of four dropped off the ship and into a rescue boat, where the man and his daughter were pulled out of the water and onto the vessel.
Chandler claimed that the incident began at 11:15 a.m. and the duo was pulled up at 11:47 a.m. local time.
'I didn't think they'd find them,' she candidly told PEOPLE. 'I had to tell my own 9-year-old daughter Harper they were probably gone [because] they usually can't find people who fall.'

Royal Caribbean cruise boat worker stabs female coworker and then dies jumping overboard

A Royal Caribbean crew member jumped overboard to his death after stabbing his female coworker, according to police. A 35-year-old South African man was working on the Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas cruise ship when he stabbed a 28-year-old South African female crew member 'multiple times' just before 7.30 a.m. Thursday, the Royal Bahamas Police Force said. The man then fled the scene and jumped off the ship, authorities said. He was later pronounced dead by onboard medical staff. The female victim suffered stab wounds to her upper body. She was treated and is now in stable condition, police said. It's not immediately clear what prompted the violence. A motive behind the stabbing has not been identified and crew members have not been publicly named. An investigation into the matter is ongoing. An autopsy has been scheduled, police said. A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean described the incident to NBC News as "a personal dispute.' No additional details were mentioned. "Our crew immediately initiated a search and rescue operation, but unfortunately the crew member passed away," the company in a statement to CBS News. "We extend our condolences to the crew member's family and loved ones. To respect their privacy, we have no additional details to share." Passengers recalled crew members rushing after the intercom blasted 'Oscar, Oscar, Oscar" — the Royal Caribbean's code for man overboard, the outlet reported. The ship then slowed before turning around. The Independent has reached out to the Royal Caribbean for more information. The Icon of the Seas was making its way back from the Bahamas to Miami when the incident transpired, CruiseMapper shows. The cruise ship departed Miami on July 19 and then made stops in St. Marteen, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Bahamas, before returning to Florida. The Icon of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship, made its maiden voyage in January 2024. The 1,200-feet-long vessel boasts seven pools, the 'world's largest waterpark at sea,' six waterslides and nine whirlpools. It holds up to 5,610 passengers and 2,350 crew members across its 19 floors.

Cruise ship crew member stabbed female colleague, 28, before jumping overboard to his death in Caribbean

A crew member on the world's largest cruise ship stabbed his female colleague before jumping overboard to his death, according to police. The two crew members, whose identities have not been revealed, were working aboard the lavish Icon Of The Seas shortly before 7.30pm on Thursday evening, when they became embroiled in a "personal dispute". The man repeatedly stabbed the woman in the upper body and then leapt overboard into the sea off the coast of San Salvador Island in the Bahamas. As panicked passengers threw life rings into the water, onboard medical staff rushed into a speedboat to rescue him. Half an hour later, the body of the 35-year-old South African man was retrieved from the sea by the search party. The woman, aged 28, also from South Africa, was later found on board with stab wounds to her upper body but she is now in a stable condition, Royal Bahamas Police Force told NBC News. Reports state that the cruise ship immediately slowed down and turned around when the alarm was sounded that the man had gone overboard. Tracking data shows the ship changed its course northeast of San Salvador Island, around 200 miles east of Nassau. The decks were sealed off while an emergency rescue effort was carried out. Images showed medical officers pulling the man's body from the water on to the speedboat. A Royal Caribbean spokesperson said: "One of the crew members was injured, was attended to by the onboard medical team, and she is now in stable condition. 'Unfortunately, the other crew member is deceased after he went overboard and was recovered in a search and rescue operation.' They added that "a personal dispute" is understood to have led to the attack. Investigations are ongoing and an autopsy is due to take place to determine the man's cause of death. The Icon of the Seas holds the record as the world's largest cruise ship, measuring 1,196ft in length by 219ft in width, and it has no fewer than 20 decks. A total of 2,350 international crew members are employed on the ship.

Crew Member Stabbed Co-Worker Before Jumping Off World's Largest Cruise Ship: Police

A Royal Caribbean crew member who died after going overboard off the coast of the Bahamas on Thursday night is alleged to have stabbed his co-worker before jumping into the sea. The 35-year-old South African man—who has not been named publicly—stabbed his 28-year-old female South African co-worker multiple times on board the Icon of the Seas near the Bahamian island of San Salvador, according to police. Shocked passengers reported hearing the 'Oscar' alarm code sound over the ship's emergency address system at roughly 7 p.m., indicating someone had gone overboard. The nearly 250,0000-ton cruise ship slowed, changed course, and deployed rescue vessels. The man was recovered unresponsive and later pronounced dead by medical staff on board. In a statement, the cruise line described the incident as a 'personal dispute.' 'One of the crew members was injured, was attended to by the onboard medical team, and she is now in stable condition,' a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said. 'Unfortunately, the other crew member is deceased after he went overboard and was recovered in a search and rescue operation.' A Royal Bahamas Police Force Public Affairs and Communications Officer told TMZ that the unnamed man intended to take his own life following the incident. The Icon of the Seas is the largest cruise vessel in the world. She is currently sailing a 7-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary and is scheduled to dock in Miami on Saturday. An autopsy will be carried out to determine the 35-year-old's precise cause of death. The alleged assault remains under investigation. Solve the daily Crossword
