Terengganu JPV implements livestock vaccination to curb HS outbreak
Its director, Dr Anun Man, said the vaccination covered livestock within a five-kilometre radius from the outbreak site, first detected on April 7.
'Control measures and quarantine began on April 24 after the outbreak was confirmed, with 25 per cent of the livestock vaccinated in two days.
'We are concerned that if uncontrolled, the outbreak could affect Aidiladha sacrificial rites, as livestock movement requires health permits. The high demand for sacrificial animals also raises the risk of illegal imports,' she said when observing the vaccination process at Kampung Manir here today.
Dr Anun noted that free-range farming of buffaloes in Terengganu posed a challenge, as JPV needs to provide pens for quarantine and vaccination.
'We urge farmers to bring free-range livestock into pens and call us for vaccination.
'Buffaloes, especially in extreme weather conditions, are at higher risk of HS,' she said, adding that the Terengganu JPV administered 11,731 HS vaccinations last year.

Kedah farm animals free to move ahead of Aidiladha, except Ulu Melaka
ALOR STAR: Farm animals can move freely across Kedah ahead of tomorrow's Aidiladha celebration, with only the Ulu Melaka area in Langkawi still under movement restrictions. The Ulu Melaka area remains a Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) control zone following an outbreak last month. Kedah Veterinary Services Department director, Dr Shaharul Amar Talib said: "At present, there are no movement restrictions on farm animals throughout Kedah, except in the Ulu Melaka area in Langkawi." However, the livestock movement ban in and out of Ulu Melaka, imposed on May 19, remains in place, he told NST. Dr Shaharul said livestock movement restriction was being enforced in the area to prevent the disease from spreading and to keep other animals safe. He urged farmers and animal suppliers to follow the rules, adding that if anyone needs to move animals in or out of that area, they must get official permission (a permit) first. Last month, the department restricted livestock movement in and out of Ulu Melaka following an outbreak of FMD, a highly contagious viral infection that affected 37 head of cattle. In preparation for the Aidiladha celebration, Dr Shaharul said the department has issued a total of 442 qurban (sacrificial livestock) movement permits. "We expect this number to keep rising as Hari Raya Qurban approaches. The department will continue to closely monitor livestock movements to ensure smooth operations and a sufficient supply of sacrificial animals throughout the state," he said.

Haj pilgrims head to Arafah as temperatures hit 40 degrees Celcius
MAKKAH: Nearly two million Muslims began moving towards Arafah today to start their haj, one of the five pillars of Islam, as temperatures soared to a maximum of 40 degrees Celsius. Their journey began in stages this morning, with the pilgrims set to perform wukuf in Arafah tomorrow (9 Zulhijjah), from zuhur (midday) until subuh (dawn) on the night of Aidiladha. The haj rituals will continue in the sacred areas of Muzdalifah and Mina, where pilgrims will spend the night (mabit) and perform the symbolic stoning of the three jamrah pillars from tomorrow until June 8 (12 Zulhijjah). With temperatures forecast to reach between 40 and 45 degrees Celcius over the next few days, the haj authorities have reminded pilgrims to prepare themselves mentally, physically and spiritually for the intense conditions during the pilgrimage. According to Malaysian pilgrim Ahmad Sobirin Suhaizad, 25, he and his family are scheduled to leave for Arafah after zuhur on buses provided by Tabung Haji (TH). "I was informed that we will depart after zuhur for Arafah. As of right now, we're still waiting for our turn as the movement is being done in stages. "We're not too worried about the transport, as everything is well arranged. Our only concern is the heat. Please pray that our journey goes smoothly," he said when contacted. Ahmad Sobirin, who is travelling with his mother Zuraidah Mohamed Anwar, 58, and sister Nurul Izzah Suhaizad, 22, is among the 31,600 Malaysian pilgrims registered under TH for the 1446H/2025 haj season. In anticipation of the extreme weather, the Saudi Arabian government has prohibited pilgrims from walking from Makkah to Arafah. Authorities said the decision was made after forecasts showed temperatures could soar up to 45 degrees celcius, posing a serious risk of heat exhaustion. The Saudi Transport and Logistic Services Ministry is closely monitoring the number of vehicles needed for haj, with readiness to increase the fleet beyond the 25,000 buses and 9,000 taxis currently allocated. The Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance Ministry has also ramped up facilities for pilgrims, including additional air-conditioned areas. In another effort to reduce heat exposure, Saudi Arabia has expanded the use of cooled walkways and rubber-paved roads. These measures, first introduced in 2023, are aimed at lowering surface temperatures and improving walking comfort during long journeys between the holy sites. This year, the area covered by the cooling system in Arafah has been increased by 82 per cent, now spanning more than 84,000 square metres.

555 inmates released on licence ahead of Aidiladha under Ihsan Madani programme
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 555 inmates nationwide were released today under the Ihsan Madani Licensed Prissoner Release Programme (PBSL) in conjunction with the upcoming Aidiladha celebration. In a statement yesterday, the Malaysian Prisons Department said that the initiative aims to provide eligible inmates with the opportunity to reunite with their families and reintegrate into society, in line with national rehabilitation and social reintegration efforts. Johor recorded the highest number of releases with 83 inmates, followed by Sabah (82), Sarawak (68), Terengganu (67), Pahang (54), Selangor (51), Penang (45), Kedah (28), Perak and Negeri Sembilan (25 each), Perlis (15) and Kelantan (12). "The programme is carried out in conjunction with national festive celebrations to support the rehabilitation process and encourage the successful reintegration of eligible prospects into society," the department said. Including previous releases granted during Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Kaamatan and Gawai, a total of 1,934 inmates have benefited from PBSL so far this year. Between 2020 and 2024, a total of 57,779 inmates were released under the scheme, with 2024 marking the highest annual figure at 20,578, followed by 2023 (15,180), 2022 (8,412), 2021 (3,517) and 2020 (1,938). PBSL is available to inmates serving prison sentences of under three years, as well as to vulnerable groups and pregnant women serving terms of less than four years. To qualify, inmates must have completed rehabilitation programmes, demonstrated good behaviour and secured a suitable guarantor. – BERNAMA
