Randy Brown targets ranked UFC opponent next, interested in Gilbert Burns

LAS VEGAS - Randy Brown thinks he's earned a ranked UFC opponent for his next fight.
Winner of eight of his past 10 fights, Brown (20-6 MMA, 14-6 UFC) is coming off a Fight of the Night knockout of Nicolas Dalby at UFC on ESPN 66 in April. He is certain that he'll get a big step up in competition after his statement performance against Dalby.
"I would love October," Brown told MMA Junkie on the 2025 UFC Hall of Fame red carpet. "There's so many different guys I'd love to fight. I know that I'm fighting in the rankings next so, it's moving. The division is moving. So for me, I like Geoff Neal. I think that's a great fight. I also think that Gilbert Burns is another great fight for me. There's so much opportunities right now in the division, and I think there's a lot of opportunities for myself."
Geoff Neal is rumored to be rebooked against Carlos Prates at UFC 319 on Aug. 16 in Chicago. As for Gilbert Burns (22-9 MMA, 15-9 UFC), the former title challenger lost his fourth-straight fight when he was knocked out by Michael Morales in the UFC Fight Night 256 headliner, but sits in the No. 10 spot in the welterweight rankings.
Brown was happy to rebound in emphatic fashion after his controversial decision loss to Bryan Battle at UFC 310.
"The way the Bryan Battle fight went, I personally thought I won," Brown said. "A lot of people thought I won, the company thought I won, but you can't leave it in the hands of the judges. That's just what it is, and yeah, that fight with Dalby was a moment to remind people that I'm still here, I'm still hungry, and I'm still very dangerous, and I belong in the top of the division with the best in the world."

Syracuse football lands commitment from four-star, top-50 WR Calvin Russell

Syracuse football made waves in Fran Brown's first season as coach, notching a 10-win season and lighting up scoreboards with a prolific passing offense. That momentum has continued heading into Brown's second season. The Orange landed a commitment on July 5 from wide receiver Calvin Russell, a four-star prospect from the class of 2026 who, if he signs, will be the third-highest-rated recruit that Syracuse has ever landed in 247Sports' history. A star at powerhouse Miami Northwestern High School, where he plays for former NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, Russell is rated as a four-star prospect by 247's composite rankings, which have him as the No. 47 overall prospect nationally in the 2026 class and the No. 5 wide receiver. As a junior last season, Russell caught 39 passes for 704 yards and 13 touchdowns while helping lead Northwestern to a Florida 3A state title. He also averaged 21 points and seven rebounds per game as a sophomore for the school's basketball team. According to ESPN, he is expected to "pursue the opportunity" to play for the Orange's men's basketball team. Russell becomes the 26th commitment in Syracuse's 2026 recruiting class, which is ranked 20th nationally by 247 and fifth in the ACC. In its first season under Brown, who arrived after two seasons as Georgia's defensive backs coach, the Orange went 10-3, just its second 10-win season since 2002. Syracuse had finished with a losing record in eight of the previous 10 seasons. The Orange finished 21st among 134 FBS programs in scoring offense, averaging 34.1 points per game, while quarterback Kyle McCord was the nation's leading passer in his first and ultimately only season with the program, throwing for 4,779 yards.

Video: Ranking UFC's 10 two-division champions from best to worst

There aren't many truly exclusive clubs in the UFC after more than 30 years of existence, but the double champ club remains one of them. More than 100 different fighters have had a UFC title wrapped around their waist over the course of UFC history. That's difficult enough to do in itself, but the list gets significantly shaved down when separating those who went on to capture a belt in a second division. Only Randy Couture, B.J. Penn, Conor McGregor, Amanda Nunes, Georges St-Pierre, Daniel Cormier, Henry Cejudo, Alex Pereira, Jon Jones and, most recently, Ilia Topuria, have budged their way into the two-division champion list, and each have forged their own path to getting there. After claiming two of those belts in a three-fight stretch with knockout of Alexander Volkanovski and Charles Oliveira, some have argued Topuria's rise and in-cage performances are the most impressive of the group. Others argue he still has more work to do to entrench himself in the position like others who defended titles in multiple divisions. It makes ranking the 10 double champions a tricky task, but that's what former UFC and Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez and MMA Junkie senior reporter Mike Bohn attempted to do. Check out "The Bohnfire" podcast in the video above where Alvarez and Bohn rank all the UFC two-division champions with their individual criteria.
