Turkish police seize 825 kg of heroin: interior minister

Arab News4 days ago
ISTANBUL: Police have seized 825 kilogrammes of heroin and arrested 30 people in a string of raids largely in southern Turkiye, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on Wednesday.
Straddling Asia and Europe, Turkiye lies on several major smuggling routes and is the main entry point for heroin on the European market.
'In operations across seven provinces, centered in (the southern city of) Adana.. we seized 825 kilogrammes (1,818 pounds) of heroin and arrested 30 suspected drug traffickers,' he wrote on X.
In a simultaneous operation, police raided 38 different addresses in Adana, Hakkari, Hatay, Istanbul, Van, Diyarbakir, and Mersin, seizing unlicensed weapons and 'a large quantity' of digital material, he said.
Heroin continues to be the most commonly used illicit opioid within the European Union and 'increasingly relies on maritime routes and in particular the use of global container traffic and ferries' departing from Turkiye, Europol's 2024 analysis of the EU drug market said.
The report said Turkish criminal networks continue to dominate the wholesale trafficking of heroin to the European market.

A man is injured in a struggle with an escaped lion in southern Turkiye

ISTANBUL: A farmer was seriously injured when he was attacked by a lion that had escaped a zoo in southern Turkiye on Sunday, local media reported. The lion was later shot dead. The male lion, named Zeus, escaped his cage at Land of Lions in Manavgat, a resort city on the Mediterranean coast, in the early hours, the private Demiroren News Agency said. A few hours later, he attacked the 53-year-old man, who was sleeping outdoors after watering pistachio trees. 'I heard a whispering sound. When I lifted the blanket, the lion fell on me,' Suleyman Kir told the agency. 'We struggled and fought. ... I grabbed his neck and squeezed. At that moment, he ran off a little.' The Ilhas News Agency reported that police officers searching for the lion heard the noise of the struggle and scared it off by shooting into the air. Ilhas also showed footage of the lion strolling outside homes before disappearing into scrubland. Kir was hospitalized with wounds to his head, shoulder and legs. Police teams and drones found the lion in a nearby wooded area. Land of Lions' website boasts that the park holds 'the world's largest lion family' of more than 30 animals. It also contains tigers, bears and wolves. It wasn't clear how the lion escaped but an investigation has been launched. The zoo did not comment on Sunday.

Pro-Kurdish lawmakers visit Abdullah Ocalan as PKK to destroy arms

A delegation from the pro-Kurdish DEM party went to meet jailed PKK founder Abdullah Ocalan on Sunday as his Kurdish militants prepared to begin destroying their weapons, the party said. Lawmakers Pervin Buldan and Mithat Sancar traveled with lawyer Ozgur Faik Erol to Imrali prison island near Istanbul where Ocalan has been serving a life in solitary since 1999, a DEM statement said. The talks came ahead of a planned ceremony by PKK militants in Iraqi Kurdistan at which they said they would begin destroying a first tranche of weapons -- due on or around 10-12 July. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday the move would give momentum to peace efforts with the Kurds, telling reporters he would also meet the DEM delegation. That meeting is expected to happen next week. In February, Ocalan urged the PKK to end its armed struggle and disband, which the group formally did in May, drawing a line under a decades-long conflict that has claimed more than 40,000 lives. The disarmament process is expected to unfold over the coming months.
