Pro-Kurdish lawmakers visit Abdullah Ocalan as PKK to destroy arms

A delegation from the pro-Kurdish DEM party went to meet jailed PKK founder Abdullah Ocalan on Sunday as his Kurdish militants prepared to begin destroying their weapons, the party said.
Lawmakers Pervin Buldan and Mithat Sancar traveled with lawyer Ozgur Faik Erol to Imrali prison island near Istanbul where Ocalan has been serving a life in solitary since 1999, a DEM statement said.
The talks came ahead of a planned ceremony by PKK militants in Iraqi Kurdistan at which they said they would begin destroying a first tranche of weapons -- due on or around 10-12 July.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday the move would give momentum to peace efforts with the Kurds, telling reporters he would also meet the DEM delegation.
That meeting is expected to happen next week.
In February, Ocalan urged the PKK to end its armed struggle and disband, which the group formally did in May, drawing a line under a decades-long conflict that has claimed more than 40,000 lives.
The disarmament process is expected to unfold over the coming months.

Turkiye says methane exposure kills 5 troops in north Iraq

ISTANBUL: Five Turkish soldiers died after being exposed to methane gas during a search operation in caves in northern Iraq on Sunday, the defense ministry said. The incident comes at a sensitive time with Turkiye in talks to end the conflict with the Kurds after the PKK militant group agreed to end its decades-long armed struggle. The conflict, which began in 1984, has cost more than 40,000 lives. The incident occurred as they were searching for the remains of a soldier who was shot dead by Kurdish fighters in the area in May 2022, whose body was never recovered, it said. At the time, Turkiye was waging Operation Claw Lock, with its troops seeking to eradicate Kurdish PKK militants holed up in caves along the border. 'During a search operation in a cave... previously known to have been used as a hospital... 19 of our personnel were exposed to methane gas.' it said. They were immediately taken to hospital for treatment, but five of them died, it said. News of the deaths emerged as a delegation from the pro-Kurdish DEM party was visiting jailed PKK founder Abdullah Ocalan as part of the ongoing negotiations with the Turkish government. 'During the meeting, we were informed that there were soldiers who lost their lives due to methane gas poisoning in the territory of the Kurdistan Regional Government,' the delegation said. 'This incident caused Mr. Ocalan and all of us deep sadness. We wish Allah's mercy to those who lost their lives and offer our condolences to their families and relatives.'

Pro-Kurdish MPs to meet Erdogan after Ocalan talks

ISTANBUL: Lawmakers from the pro-Kurdish DEM party were to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday for talks described by jailed PKK founder Abdullah Ocalan as having a 'historic nature.' DEM, Turkiye's third biggest party, has played a key role in facilitating an emerging peace deal between the government and Ocalan, whose militant group the PKK in May ended its decades-long armed struggle and disband. On Sunday, the delegation traveled to Imrali island where Ocalan has been serving a life sentence in solitary confinement since 1999. They said they had had 'a very productive two-and-a-half hour meeting' with the 76-year-old former militant. 'He said he attached great importance our delegation's meeting with the president which was of a historic nature,' the delegation said in a statement. 'Similarly, he said the commission to be established in the Turkish (parliament) will also play a major role in directing the peace and the solution.' With the process 'entering a new phase' it was very important everyone played their role, he told them. 'His hope, confidence and belief in the contribution of this process to the democratization of Turkiye as a whole is extremely strong,' they said. The three-strong delegation that went to Imrali included lawmakers Pervin Buldan and Mithat Sancar and lawyer Ozgur Faik Erol, DEM said. The delegation would meet with DEM's leadership on Monday morning then Buldan and Sancar would head to the presidential palace for talks with Erdogan at 1200 GMT, it said. The meeting came as the PKK was to hold a ceremony in Iraqi Kurdistan to start destroying a first tranche of weapons — which will likely take place on or around 10-12 July. Erdogan said the move would give momentum to peace efforts with the Kurds. The disarmament process is expected to unfold over the coming months.

Lion escapes zoo in southern Turkey, farmer who fought it off seriously injured

A farmer was seriously injured when he was attacked by a lion that had escaped a zoo in southern Turkey on Sunday, local media reported. The lion was later shot dead. The male lion, named Zeus, escaped his cage at Land of Lions in Manavgat, a resort city on the Mediterranean coast, in the early hours, the private Demiroren News Agency said. A few hours later, he attacked the 53-year-old man, who was sleeping outdoors after watering pistachio trees. 'I heard a whispering sound. When I lifted the blanket, the lion fell on me,' Suleyman Kir told the agency. 'We struggled and fought. ... I grabbed his neck and squeezed. At that moment, he ran off a little.' The Ilhas News Agency reported that police officers searching for the lion heard the noise of the struggle and scared it off by shooting into the air. Ilhas also showed footage of the lion strolling outside homes before disappearing into scrubland. Kir was hospitalized with wounds to his head, shoulder and legs. Police teams and drones found the lion in a nearby wooded area. Land of Lions' website boasts that the park holds 'the world's largest lion family' of more than 30 animals. It also contains tigers, bears and wolves. It wasn't clear how the lion escaped but an investigation has been launched. The zoo did not comment on Sunday.
