Reviewing CCI order, will take appropriate legal recourse: Asian Paints

Asian Paints is reviewing the order passed by fair trade regulator CCI directing a probe against the country's leading paint maker for alleged abuse of its dominant position in the market and said it plans to take appropriate legal recourse. Asian Paints said it will cooperate with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) in the investigation over allegations of exclusionary practices. "The company is currently reviewing the order and will take appropriate legal recourse. The company remains committed to fully cooperating with the CCI during the course of the investigation," Asian Paint said in a late night regulatory filing on Thursday. Earlier this week, CCI ordered an investigation against Asian Paints for allegedly abusing its dominant position in the market for manufacturing and sales of decorative paint over the complaints filed by Aditya Birla group firm Grasim Industries . Grasim, a new entrant in the domestic paint industry with brand Birla Opus, had accused Asian Paints of engaging in exclusionary practices aimed at stifling its entry and growth in the Indian decorative paint segment. "The Commission is of the opinion that a prima facie case of contravention of the provisions of section 4(2)(a)(i), 4(2)(c) and 4(2)(d) of the Act by the OP (Asian Paints) is made out in the present matter," CCI said in the order. Section 4 of the Competition Act, 2002, prohibits abuse of dominant position . CCI has directed its probe unit Director General for an investigation into the allegations and submit a preliminary report within a period of 90 days. CCI had observed that Asian Paints, by restraining its dealers from dealing with Grasim's Birla Opus by enforcing exclusivity upon them, which is imposition of unfair conditions upon them, found to be in the nature of exploitative conduct. The CCI order had also clarified that observations made were not a final view on the case merits and directed the DG to conduct the probe without being swayed in any manner whatsoever by the observations made by it. In the last 5-6 years, several new players have entered the paint market, including Pidilite with Haisha Paints, Grasim with its Birla Opus, and JSW Paints. Besides, pipes and fittings manufacturer Astral acquired Gem Paints and JK Cements acquired Acro Paints making its entry into the paint sector. However, Asian Paints still controls over 50 per cent of the decorative paint market in India, followed by Berger Paints, and Kansai Nerolac. According to reports, these three major players in the Indian paint industry control over three-fourths of the market. According to an ICICI Direct report, the size of the India Paint and Coatings Market is estimated at USD 9.60 billion in 2024. It is expected to reach USD 15.04 billion by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 9.38 per cent between 2024 and 2029.

With the US dollar at multi-year lows, could Indian stock market see a surge in FPI inflows?

The Indian stock market has seen a resumption of overseas inflows in recent months, driven by easing global trade tensions, improving domestic fundamentals, and expectations of an earnings recovery in FY26. Though foreign remained net buyers over the last three months, the aggressive selling during the first quarter of 2025 more than offset the recent inflows, keeping their overall stance negative for the year so far, with total outflows standing at ₹ 1.3 lakh crore. Nevertheless, analysts expect that inflows may increase in the near future amid a sharp drop in the US dollar, which crashed 11% in the first half of the current calendar year, marking its steepest half-year decline since 1973 and its weakest six-month performance since 2009. At the current level of 97, the dollar index is trading at the lowest level since February 2022. Ross Maxwell, Global Strategy Operations Lead at VT Markets, said a weaker USD, especially when tied to expectations of rate cuts in the US, will generally have a positive impact on Foreign Institutional Investor behavior, as investors will rotate from developed markets into emerging markets to seek higher yields. This can have a positive impact on Indian equities, as it brings more capital inflows into the country, supporting the rupee and lowering bond yields. He noted that a strong rupee and lower import costs due to the weaker dollar can improve margins for big sectors in India such as aviation, chemicals, and consumer goods. Lower prices for USD-denominated commodities such as metals and crude oil will reduce inflationary pressures and boost Indian companies, although some export sectors such as IT and pharmaceuticals may face challenges. Maxwell added that overall returns on Indian assets can also increase, as the cost of hedging positions decreases with a weaker USD, which can boost investor capital flows into bonds and equities. 'When we see a rotation from investors into emerging markets, India is often one of the first choices due to its macroeconomic stability and large consumer market, which is why I think we can see further gains,' he said. Brokerage Elara Securities, citing historical data, also made a case for an 8-10% rise in the Indian benchmark index amid USD weakness. "In each of the 8 years when the DXY fell more than 5%, the Nifty posted positive returns—with a median gain of +34%. To date in 2025, despite a 9% DXY decline and a –0.9 correlation, the Nifty is up a mere 7.5% YTD. If past patterns hold, an additional 8–10% upside appears plausible," it said. With FII shareholding near low since Sept 2017 and a macro backdrop resembling prior recovery cycles — rate cuts, benign inflation, and external stability — the environment remains supportive, it said, expecting it to play out through a selective high beta rally. That said, Maxwell cautioned there are some challenges ahead. If US recession fears persist and this translates into investor fears over a global recession, then this could hurt market sentiment and dampen demand for Indian exports. He also warned that if geopolitical tensions rise, we may see a return of risk-off sentiment, which can prompt investors back to safe havens in the short term, hurting Indian markets. Maxwell advised traders and investors to keep a close eye on the US earnings season for clues on how the US economy is performing. Whilst the Fed is expected to cut rates, he noted, 'we should look for clues from the Fed about any potential concerns over inflationary issues caused by tariffs that could force them to increase rates and therefore strengthen the USD again.' At WTO, India proposes retaliatory duties against US over auto tariffs

New Delhi: India on Friday proposed imposing retaliatory duties under the WTO (World Trade Organisation) norms against the US over American tariffs on automobile sector in the name of safeguard measures . "The proposed suspension of concessions or other obligations would take the form of an increase in tariffs on selected products originating in the United States," according to a notification of the WTO being circulated at the request of India. India has notified the WTO's Council for Trade in Goods of its proposed suspension of concessions and other obligations under certain WTO provisions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Remember Him? Sit Down Before You See What He Looks Like Now 33 Bridges Undo "This notification is made in connection with safeguard measures extended by the United States of America on imports of automobile parts from India," it said. On March 26 this year, the US adopted a safeguard measure in the form of a tariff increase of 25 per cent ad valorem on imports of passenger vehicles and light trucks, and on certain automobile parts from India. Live Events These measures apply from May 3, 2025 as regards automobile parts, and for an unlimited duration. The measures have not been notified by the United States to the WTO, but are, in essence, safeguard measures. India has maintained that the measures taken by the United States are not consistent with the GATT (General Agreement on Trade and Tariff) 1994 and the agreement on Safeguards. As consultations sought by India on these tariffs have not taken place, "India reserves the right to suspend concessions or other obligations", it added. The safeguard measures would affect USD 2,895 million imports annually into the United States of the relevant products originating in India, on which the duty collection would be USD 723.75 million. "Accordingly, India's proposed suspension of concessions would result in an equivalent amount of duty collected from products originating in the United States," it said. The development is important as India and the US are actively negotiating an interim trade agreement to boost trade ties. India has last month taken similar measures against the US tariffs on steel and aluminium.
