Ex-England captain Farrell set for Lions call-up
Former England captain Owen Farrell is in line for a remarkable call-up to the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia.
Coach Andy Farrell is set to turn to his son as a replacement for utility back Elliot Daly, who has been ruled out with the arm injury he suffered in Wednesday's win over Queensland Reds.

Owen Farrell, 33, recently returned to Saracens after a difficult season in Paris with Racing 92.
He won 112 caps for his country before taking a break from England duty after the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
A Test Lion on the 2013, 2017 and 2021 tours, there is no doubting Farrell's credentials.
But his call-up is controversial.
Farrell hasn't played international rugby in nearly two years and hasn't played at all in nearly nine weeks after suffering a concussion while playing for Racing against Lyon on 4 May, his last game for the Top 14 side.
A host of other contenders – such as Wales' Blair Murray or Scotland's Tom Jordan – have been training and preparing for competitive rugby with their national sides.

However when naming his Lions squad on 8 May, Andy Farrell confirmed Owen had been in selection contention despite his lack of international rugby.
"Owen was in the conversation obviously, an experienced player like that, looking for his fourth tour and with his leadership qualities," Andy Farrell said.
"But it got to a point, like with a few others, where he is still trying to find his way back to fitness.
"There are 38 picked which leaves a couple of slots open for us down the track, if and when needed. Owen and a few other guys would be in that type of bracket."

Eric Dier has said he is aiming to return to the England squad following his move to Monaco. The 31-year-old former Tottenham Hotspur defender joined the Ligue 1 side in May after the expiration of his contract at Bayern Munich, where he spent one-and-a-half seasons, winning the Bundesliga in 2024-25. 'My objective is always to try and be in the national team, this is always something that's an objective of mine,' Dier said at his official Monaco presentation. 'I have 49 caps so it would be nice to have 50 — this annoys me a little bit! — so that's an objective of mine. 'But I've always said you just have to play and play well for your club and the rest is out of your hands. That's my only focus.' Dier played under England manager Thomas Tuchel at Bayern in the second half of the 2023-24 campaign, playing 20 games and starting 18, including both legs of Bayern's Champions League quarter and semi-finals against Arsenal and Real Madrid respectively. Dier is one of a host English players who are employed outside of the UK. 'I could never imagine that when I started I would be taking this route through different countries in the way that I have,' he said. 'There's so many things that need to fall into place to end up in a club and in a situation, so for me I feel incredibly lucky to have had the experience of playing in different countries. BIRMINGHAM, England — India cruised to lunch on 419-6 as Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja collected easy runs against England on the second morning of the second test at Edgbaston on Thursday. The captain and Jadeja ate up ideal batting conditions — a flat pitch under sunny skies — in a partnership of 203 runs. Gill moved from 114 overnight to 168, his maiden 150-plus score. Jadeja advanced from 41 to 89 when he tried to fend off a Josh Tongue short ball that reared up. Jadeja gloved it to the wicketkeeper about 10 minutes before lunch. That wicket finally exposed India's wobbly tail and bowling allrounder Washington Sundar was with Gill on 1 at lunch. India scored 109 runs in the session in a slow 25 overs. Until Tongue's breakthrough, England didn't look like taking a wicket. The only disturbance to the serenity was very early when England complained to the umpires about Jadeja running on the pitch. Jadeja's reply was to cut and drive England captain Ben Stokes for consecutive boundaries. He reached his 50 in 80 balls, his ninth 50-plus score against England. Gill flicked, drove, pulled and punched Brydon Carse for fours, and reverse swept spinner Shoaib Bashir for another.
