Trade fallout: India's ban on Pakistan-origin cargo at ports triggers spike in freight costs, delays for Islamabad
Representative image India's ban on ships carrying goods originating in or exported from Pakistan has led to a sharp rise in freight charges and longer shipping times for Pakistani importers, Dawn newspaper reported, citing industry officials. The ban, imposed on May 2, 2025, following the Pahalgam terror attack, prohibits both direct and indirect movement of Pakistani goods through Indian ports. As per news agency PTI, this comprehensive restriction has not only impacted maritime logistics but also prompted intensified enforcement by Indian agencies to detect violations. 'Mother vessels are not coming to Pakistan due to this Indian action, which delays our imports by 30 to 50 days,' said Javed Bilwani, president of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in comments reported by Dawn. He said importers now rely on feeder vessels, resulting in increased transportation costs. Exporters, too, confirmed a spike in logistics expenses, especially in insurance costs. 'There is no significant impact on exports, except for a rise in insurance costs. Shipping charges had already gone up even before the escalation,' said Aamir Aziz, a textile exporter, as cited in the Dawn report. Pakistan's export sector, which heavily depends on imported raw materials for value addition, now faces added operational difficulties. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trending in in 2025: Local network access control [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo With Islamabad already restricting non-essential imports to manage its forex reserves, supply chain disruptions caused by the Indian ban carry broader economic implications. The Indian government's stance has been reinforced through multiple enforcement drives. In one such action, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) launched 'Operation Deep Manifest' to target illegal imports of Pakistani goods routed through third countries like the UAE. The finance ministry said that so far, 39 containers carrying over 1,100 metric tonnes of goods valued at Rs 9 crore have been seized under the operation. These goods were falsely declared as UAE-origin but were found to have originated from Pakistan, transshipped via Dubai. The DRI discovered money trails and financial links connecting Indian importers with Pakistani entities, and arrested one of the partners of a trading firm involved in the operation. According to the ministry, this complex modus operandi was designed to obscure the true origin of the goods using a web of intermediaries in Pakistan and the UAE. The crackdown is part of broader national security operations such as 'Operation Sindoor', aimed at tightening border trade oversight in response to regional threats. India had already raised import duties on Pakistani goods to 200% after the 2019 Pulwama terror attack. Since then, formal trade relations have remained frozen. Bilateral trade between the two countries dropped from $2.41 billion in 2018 to just $1.2 billion in 2024, as per PTI. Pakistan's exports to India declined sharply from $547.5 million in 2019 to only $480,000 last year. The government maintains that the trade restrictions are critical to safeguarding India's national and economic security and preventing misuse of trade channels. AAP suspends Punjab MLA Kunwar Vijay for 5 years after he opposes arrest of SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia
Days after the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Amritsar North in Punjab, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, opposed the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia in a disproportionate assets case, the party's political affairs committee suspended him from the party for five years. The Punjab Vigilance Bureau on June 25 arrested Majithia after conducting a raid at his residence in Amritsar in a disproportionate assets case worth Rs 540 crore Kunwar Vijay shared a video of the raid showing Majithia's wife Ganieve Kaur protesting against the alleged high-handedness of VB sleuths. Kunwar Vijay, who is a former IPS officer, said, 'When Majithia ji was in jail, the Bhagwant Mann government neither conducted any interrogation nor sought his remand and eventually allowed him bail.' 'However, it is a question of a family's dignity now, it is the dignity of every family, whether one is a politician, actor, rich or poor, friend or foe. Conducting a raid at someone's house early in the morning is against ethics. Almost every government has misused the police and vigilance agencies for its own benefit, but the outcome has never been significant,' Kunwar Vijay said on social media. While pronouncing disciplinary action against Kunwar Vijay, the AAP has stated, 'Questioning the vigilance action against Vikram Majithia proved costly for Kunwar Vijay Pratap. It is the Mann government's clear message through this big decision that politics will not be tolerated in the campaign against drugs. Action against drugs is the party's ideology and whoever tries to create obstacles in it has no place in the party. The Aam Aadmi Party has suspended Kunwar Vijay Pratap from the party for five years. This is a decision of the Aam Aadmi Party's PAC (political affairs committee). He has been suspended for being involved in anti-party activities.' Kunwar Vijay had said he may have had political disagreements or ideological differences with Majithia, but when it came to principles, religion, and integrity, one should speak out. 'When Majithia sahib was in jail in a case registered during the Congress government, the Mann government did not seek any remand or conduct any questioning. Later, the state apparatus under Mann sahib even facilitated his bail.' He had also stated that the Punjab and Haryana High Court granted him bail on the grounds that if the police don't require someone for interrogation, keeping them in custody is against the law. 'I am trying to make a point here that when he was in custody, the government enabled his bail. Now, suddenly, notices are being issued to him, raids are being conducted at his house, and the privacy of his wife is being violated. I reiterate that I have an ideological disagreement with Majithia sahib. That will remain. This, however, is a matter of ethics and integrity,' he said.

Will reclaim Gachibowli land, asserts Telangana CM Revanth Reddy; says area will be used for IT development & job creation
HYDERABAD: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday took a defiant stand on the Kancha Gachibowli land controversy and and said his govt would reclaim the entire land, spanning over 400 acres. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Certain individuals are creating obstacles, but the govt will pursue the issue legally and reclaim the land," he said without specifically mentioning 'Kancha Gachibowli'. Inaugurating the six-lane PJR flyover in Kondapur, spanning 1.2 km, he said, "We will establish IT companies on the land and generate lakhs of jobs. The Financial District has already created nearly 10 lakh jobs, while the Knowledge Park near Durgam Cheruvu has generated an additional five lakh jobs. We planned to create five lakh more jobs with Rs 1 lakh crore investment across 400 acres near Gachibowli stadium, but faced hurdles from certain quarters. " He added the land had been wrongly allocated to private parties in 2002-03. What has Modi done for Hyderabad, asks Revanth Revanth said, "But we successfully contested the claim in the Supreme Court and reclaimed it for the state govt after two decades." Controversy around Kancha Gachibowli started in Feb after the state govt announced plans to clear the land for development projects. The move met with stiff opposition from environmentalists and University of Hyderabad (UoH) student groups who alleged that damaging the forest flora and fauna would fuel the climate crisis. The issue had reached up to the Supreme Court which warned the state govt against clearing the forest. Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the flyover, Revanth challenged Union minister G Kishan Reddy and BJP's eight MPs in Telangana to explain Prime Minister Narendra Modi's contribution to the city. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Bengaluru, Chennai, and Andhra Pradesh were sanctioned metro rail projects," he said. "Gujarat was given a bullet train worth Rs 2 lakh crore. Telangana faces unequal treatment in riverfront development funding. While Sabarmati in Gujarat, Yamuna to Delhi, and Ganga to Uttar Pradesh got funds, our Musi riverfront remains unfunded." Hyd vying with NY, Tokyo "I made a personal visit to Kishan Reddy's home and invited him to join us. We will call on Amit Shah during his upcoming visit to the city to seek approvals for our Metro project, regional ring road, and Musi River development initiatives," said Revanth Reddy. He said Hyderabad aspired to compete with New York and Singapore, not just Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, and Mumbai. "Despite political hindrances in urban development, the administration continues to implement the Telangana Rising 2047 plan," he insisted. "While Delhi struggles with air pollution, Chennai faces flooding issues, and Bengaluru grapples with traffic congestion. These conditions offer valuable insights for Hyderabad's development. We are preparing plans in the next 100 days to address growing pollution concerns and plan to implement initiatives like replacing diesel buses with 3,000 electric buses, permitting electric and CNG autos, and offering complete tax exemption for EVs," Revanth said. Future City project In a review meeting with industries minister D Sridhar Babu, the CM directed officials to expedite land acquisition for the proposed Future City project. "No investor or industrialist seeking land for data centres should leave empty-handed," the CM said. "The department should prepare a 100-day action plan to create a favourable ecosystem for GCCs," he said.
