Will reclaim Gachibowli land, asserts Telangana CM Revanth Reddy; says area will be used for IT development & job creation
HYDERABAD: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday took a defiant stand on the Kancha Gachibowli land controversy and and said his govt would reclaim the entire land, spanning over 400 acres.

"Certain individuals are creating obstacles, but the govt will pursue the issue legally and reclaim the land," he said without specifically mentioning 'Kancha Gachibowli'.
Inaugurating the six-lane PJR flyover in Kondapur, spanning 1.2 km, he said, "We will establish IT companies on the land and generate lakhs of jobs. The Financial District has already created nearly 10 lakh jobs, while the Knowledge Park near Durgam Cheruvu has generated an additional five lakh jobs.
We planned to create five lakh more jobs with Rs 1 lakh crore investment across 400 acres near Gachibowli stadium, but faced hurdles from certain quarters.

He added the land had been wrongly allocated to private parties in 2002-03.

Revanth said, "But we successfully contested the claim in the Supreme Court and reclaimed it for the state govt after two decades."
Controversy around Kancha Gachibowli started in Feb after the state govt announced plans to clear the land for development projects.
The move met with stiff opposition from environmentalists and University of Hyderabad (UoH) student groups who alleged that damaging the forest flora and fauna would fuel the climate crisis. The issue had reached up to the Supreme Court which warned the state govt against clearing the forest.
Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the flyover, Revanth challenged Union minister G Kishan Reddy and BJP's eight MPs in Telangana to explain Prime Minister Narendra Modi's contribution to the city.

"Bengaluru, Chennai, and Andhra Pradesh were sanctioned metro rail projects," he said. "Gujarat was given a bullet train worth Rs 2 lakh crore. Telangana faces unequal treatment in riverfront development funding. While Sabarmati in Gujarat, Yamuna to Delhi, and Ganga to Uttar Pradesh got funds, our Musi riverfront remains unfunded."
Hyd vying with NY, Tokyo
"I made a personal visit to Kishan Reddy's home and invited him to join us.
We will call on Amit Shah during his upcoming visit to the city to seek approvals for our Metro project, regional ring road, and Musi River development initiatives," said Revanth Reddy.
He said Hyderabad aspired to compete with New York and Singapore, not just Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, and Mumbai. "Despite political hindrances in urban development, the administration continues to implement the Telangana Rising 2047 plan," he insisted.
"While Delhi struggles with air pollution, Chennai faces flooding issues, and Bengaluru grapples with traffic congestion. These conditions offer valuable insights for Hyderabad's development. We are preparing plans in the next 100 days to address growing pollution concerns and plan to implement initiatives like replacing diesel buses with 3,000 electric buses, permitting electric and CNG autos, and offering complete tax exemption for EVs," Revanth said.
Future City project
In a review meeting with industries minister D Sridhar Babu, the CM directed officials to expedite land acquisition for the proposed Future City project. "No investor or industrialist seeking land for data centres should leave empty-handed," the CM said.
"The department should prepare a 100-day action plan to create a favourable ecosystem for GCCs," he said.

Denying trans woman status of a ‘woman' violates Constitution, says Andhra Pradesh HC
Denying a transgender woman the status of a 'woman' is unconstitutional, the Andhra Pradesh High Court has held. Justice Venkata Jyothirmai Pratapa in an order on June 16 said that a trans woman married to a man is entitled to file a criminal complaint of cruelty and harassment against her husband and his relatives under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code. This section addresses cruelty inflicted upon a married woman by her husband or his relatives. The High Court made the observation while hearing petitions to quash a criminal case filed by a trans woman against her husband, his parents and a relative. 'To deny a trans woman the status of a 'woman'…solely on the ground of her reproductive capacity is to perpetuate discrimination and to violate Articles 14, 15, and 21 of the Constitution,' the order said. The High Court called such an argument 'deeply flawed and legally impermissible.' While Article 14 ensures equality before the law, Article 15 prohibits discrimination based on religion, race, caste, sex, or place of birth. Article 21 guarantees the protection of life and personal liberty. The order also stated that a narrow view of womanhood based on the ability to reproduce 'undermines the very spirit of the Constitution, which upholds dignity, identity, and equality for all individuals, irrespective of gender identity.' The trans woman married the man in 2019 according to Hindu rites. She later filed a complaint with the Ongole Police, alleging that her husband left her and that she received threatening messages. The police filed a chargesheet against the husband and his family for cruelty under Section 498A and for offences under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. In their petitions to quash the criminal case, the husband and his family argued that the complainant, being a trans woman, could not be considered a 'woman' under the anti-cruelty law. They claimed that since she cannot bear a child, she could not be seen as a woman in the 'complete sense'. In its order on June 16, the High Court drew support from several landmark Supreme Court judgements. It cited the 2014 National Legal Services Authority v Union of India verdict, which had recognised the right of transgender persons to self-identify their gender. The order also referred to the 2023 Supreme Court judgement on same-sex marriage. It noted that while the top court did not grant a universal right to marry, it unanimously affirmed that transgender persons in heterosexual relationships have the right to marry under existing laws. Pratapa concluded that the complainant, being a trans woman in a heterosexual marriage, could not be deprived of her right to lodge a complaint against her husband and his relatives. However, while ruling on the substance of allegations of cruelty made by the woman, the High Court said that the claims were 'bald and omnibus' and lacked specific details. It held that allowing criminal proceedings against the man and his parents to continue would amount to abuse of the legal process. The court went on to quash the criminal proceedings against the accused persons. However, it clarified that a trans woman in a heterosexual marriage would have protection under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code.

Centre okays ₹3,667 cr plan for road, infra development in Himachal Pradesh
The Union government has approved the annual plan of Rs 3,667 crore for the construction and up-gradation of roads, bridges and related infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh for the financial year 2024'25, said Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh on Monday. The plan includes construction of bridges, road widening, installation of crash barriers and other works on national highways across various districts of the state, he said in a statement issued here. The minister said that he recently met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and discussed important issues related to the state, appraising him that presently the state has around 1,200 kilometres of roads under the national highway network and requested to enhance central assistance for their maintenance and improvement of road and other related works. He said that while the state had submitted an annual plan of Rs 2,600 crore for the financial year 2023'24, but received only Rs 269 crore, which was insufficient. However, for the financial year 2024'25, the state government proposed a plan worth Rs 3,667 crore, which has now been approved by the Centre in June. Vikramaditya Singh informed that he had also raised the issue of constructing a tunnel beneath Jalori Jot in Kullu district and the Central Government has given in-principle approval and sanctioned Rs 1,452 crore for this tunnel. The 4.2 km long Jalori Jot tunnel under the Jalori pass in Kullu district would provide all-year connectivity to Banjat and Anni areas. He said that the construction of this tunnel would not only boost tourism in the area but also benefit lakhs of residents in the region. He said that due to repeated landslides near Brauni Nala in Shimla district on National Highway-5 (Hindustan-Tibet Road), the stretch has suffered serious damage and to address this, the Centre has approved Rs 135 crore for the construction of a bridge at this location. Apart from this, the Central government has sanctioned Rs 1,385 crore for the four-laning of the Kala Amb Paonta Sahib on Dehradun road. It includes land acquisition and pre-construction activities. The PWD minister expressed his gratitude to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and the Central government for approving significant funds for the state. He said he was hoping that strong coordination between the Centre and the State would continue in the future. Singh said that during his Delhi visit, he also met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and raised the issue of the proposed Bhubu Jot tunnel and road connecting Mandi and Kullu districts and requested that the road leading to the tunnel be declared a strategically important defence route. He said that the state was hopeful of a positive outcome on this vital road project in the near future. Once completed, the road would reduce the distance between Pathankot and Kullu by 40 to 50 kilometres which would boost tourism and also benefit local residents as well as the Indian Army.

Telangana chemical factory blast: Death toll rises to 12 as four more bodies found at accident site
Sangareddy (Telangana) [India], June 30 (ANI): The death toll in the explosion at a chemical factory in Telangana's Sangareddy district rose to 12 after State Minister Vivek Venkatswamy said that four more bodies were recovered from the accident site on Monday. Telangana Ministers Venkatswamy and Damodar Raja Narasimha visited the site, where a blast occurred earlier in the day. Speaking to the media, Venkatswamy said that currently, 12 people are in critical condition, whose treatment is underway. 'Nearly 63 people reported for work at this factory this morning. Initially, it was said that a reactor blast had occurred in the factory. We have just visited the site, and we now know that it was not a reactor blast,' he said. 'The factory incharge also lost his life in the accident. There is no one here who can tell what exactly happened out of the 63 people who reported here in the morning. We have learned that eight people have died. Right now, four more bodies have been recovered. Twelve people are critical with burn injuries. The remaining 22 people have 20-25% burns and are receiving treatment. We will get more clarity in the next one or two hours,' he added. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the loss of lives in the explosion and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakhs for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund. In a social media post on X, the Prime Minister's Office wrote, 'Anguished by the loss of lives due to a fire tragedy at a factory in Sangareddy, Telangana. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.' Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, also expressed his condolences over the deaths in the explosion. 'The news of the explosion at the chemical factory in Telangana is extremely tragic and concerning. My heartfelt condolences are with those who have lost their loved ones in this incident. I hope for the speedy recovery of all those injured,' Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X. 'The state government and administration are engaged in relief and rescue operations. Efforts are ongoing to provide every possible assistance to the affected people. In this difficult time, we stand with the affected families in every way,' he added. (ANI)
