Centre invested Rs 38,572 Cr in fisheries sector since 2015, doubling fish production: Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying
According to the press release by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, since 2015, the Government of India has infused an accumulative investment to the tune of Rs 38,572 crore in the fisheries sector. As a result, India's fish production rose from 95.79 lakh tonnes in FY 2013-14 to a record 195 lakh tonnes in FY 2024-25, marking 104 per cent growth. Inland fisheries and aquaculture witnessed a 140 per cent increase.
India's seafood exports have crossed Rs 60,500 crore, with shrimp production jumping by 270 per cent over the last decade.
The investment in the fisheries sector has been made under the government's Blue Revolution initiative. As per the Department of Fisheries' website, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries has merged all ongoing schemes under the umbrella of Blue Revolution.
Meanwhile, Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, will launch several key initiatives at the National Fish Farmers Day 2025 celebrations at ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA), Bhubaneswar, on July 10.
The initiatives include the announcement of new Fisheries Clusters, the release of the ICAR Training Calendar, and the unveiling of guidelines on seed certification and hatchery operations aimed at ensuring quality, standardisation, and capacity building in the fisheries sector.
The Union Minister will also felicitate fisheries beneficiaries, including traditional fishers, cooperatives/FFPOs, KCC cardholders, and promising fisheries start-ups. In addition, virtual foundation stones will be laid, and select PMMSY-supported fisheries projects will be inaugurated, marking a strong push towards infrastructure development, entrepreneurship promotion, and inclusive growth in the sector, the press release said.
National Fish Farmer Day 2025 is celebrated to honour and commemorate the contributions of Professor Dr Hiralal Chaudhury and his colleague Dr K. H. Alikunhi, who guided the induced breeding and reproduction in Indian Major Carps using the Hypophysation technique on this day in 1957, which eventually led to a revolution in Inland Aquaculture. The revamped Kaushambi terminal is to be linked with Sahibabad and Old Bus Adda with Ghaziabad rapid rail stations to streamline multimodal transport. These three terminals are among 23 across the state selected for overhaul. The terminals are being developed under a PPP model. Tenders were floated in Dec 2022, and one firm was selected for all three projects. But delays in environmental approvals, clearance from the forest department required to cut down 25 trees at Kaushambi depot, has held up execution. A UPSRTC official said funds were deposited under CAMPA, or Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority, for clearance, but the wait has dragged on. Complicating matters further is the logistical challenge of relocating operations during construction. "UPSRTC had initially considered shifting bus operations from Kaushambi to Arthala, but that plan didn't materialise," the UPSRTC official added. "We are now exploring temporary relocation to Anand Vihar Bus Terminal."

Using UPI data, govt cracks down on unregistered traders to boost GST revenue
Bengaluru: In a significant move to increase tax collections, the govt has begun using Unified Payments Interface (UPI) data to identify traders, especially those accepting payments via QR codes, who have evaded goods and services tax (GST) registration. After analysing UPI transactions, the commercial taxes department recently issued notices to some 14,000 traders. Officials say these individuals have crossed the mandatory GST registration thresholds but failed to register. Under GST rules, traders selling goods with an annual turnover above Rs 40 lakh or offering services above Rs 20 lakh are required to register. Those with turnover below Rs 1.5 crore can opt for the composite scheme, paying 1% tax without availing input tax credit. So far, only Rs 26,241 crore has been collected, indicating a 13% shortfall. Taxing unregistered businesses could yield an additional Rs 10,000 crore. However, the enforcement has caused concern among small business owners, particularly grocery stores, bakeries, and vegetable vendors. Many have reported being asked to pay tax arrears dating back to 2021, with liabilities ranging from Rs 40 lakh to Rs 50 lakh — amounts they say are unmanageable in one go. "The govt's move is welcome and its intent unquestionable," said trade activist Sajjan Raj Mehta. "But it should not lead to harassment from tax officials as most traders tracked through UPI are small businessmen. The govt should be considerate to them." Traders argue that not all UPI transactions reflect business income, citing personal payments and fund transfers. However, officials say only traders receiving over Rs 40 lakh through UPI were targeted, and that these digital payments likely underestimate total turnover, which could include cash and card sales as well. BT Manohar, a member of Karnataka State GST Advisory Council, emphasised the need for fairness. "The drive has spread awareness among traders about GST rules and there is no denying that those liable must pay tax," he said. "If there are personal payments through UPI other than business transactions, then traders should be given the opportunity to present their case." The govt has clarified that hawkers and sales of exempted goods like bread will remain outside the GST ambit. Only sales of taxable goods, including items attracting 5% GST, including condiments will be scrutinised, besides those falling under the higher slabs. Bansal added: "The govt is ready to give traders a fair hearing and help them if their cases are genuine. CM: Power projects with 1 lakh cr investment underway in Arunachal
1 2 New Delhi: Multiple hydro-power projects with an investment of over Rs 1 lakh crore are underway in Arunachal Pradesh to produce 18,000 MW of power, chief minister Pema Khandu has said. Five of these projects of 2,620 MW have been allocated by the state govt to the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd (NEEPCO), five projects of 5,097 MW to Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd (SJVN) and two projects with a capacity of 3,800 MW to the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation. "As of now, on the ground, the work for generating a total of 18,000 MW of hydro-power is on. In the coming days, we will add more projects. All these projects involved more than Rs 1 lakh crore investment," Khandu told PTI in an interview here. He said these projects were earlier allotted to private sector developers but remained non-starters due to various reasons. Arunachal Pradesh govt, therefore, decided to rope in central hydro PSUs to give a push to the languishing projects. He said wherever there were immediate doable projects, the state govt signed the MoUs for the development of 13,000 MWs last year. "Besides these, there are some ongoing projects like the Lower Subansiri hydro-electric project of 2,000 MW. It will start generating power from next year. There is one more project which is even bigger than the Lower Subansiri — that will produce 2880 MW power. Work on this project has also started," he said. Once operational, the Lower Subansiri hydro-power project will be the biggest hydropower plant of India. After that, the proposed 2,880 MW Dibang multipurpose hydroelectric project is expected to be commissioned in 2032. It will also have the tallest dam in India with a height of about 288 metres. PTI
