The sudden cancellation of the UFC Vegas 107 main event between Maycee Barber and Erin Blanchfield shocked fans. Just hours before the flyweight bout in Louisville, Kentucky, the UFC announced that Barber was 'medically unfit to compete.' It was later revealed that a severe flare-up of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was the reason behind her withdrawal.Barber, 26, known as 'The Future,' had been on a five-fight win streak and was climbing the women's flyweight division ranks. The match against Blanchfield was highly anticipated, with many seeing it as a possible title eliminator. Barber had appeared fit during weigh-ins and promotional events throughout the week, which made her withdrawal all the more surprising.Barber had arrived in Louisville, Kentucky, earlier in the week and appeared active during media day and weigh-ins. Her unexpected exit came after she had made weight and completed all promotional obligations, making the announcement all the more surprising.Reports indicate that the medical issue arose shortly before the event, prompting the UFC's medical staff to pull her from the card for safety reasons. One possible explanation is that Maycee Barber had to cut weight to compete in the flyweight division. This process can cause extreme dehydration and put severe stress on the body. Fighters often lose large amounts of water weight quickly, weakening the immune system and triggering underlying health issues.Additionally, Barber had been managing EBV-related health concerns for much of 2024. It is not known whether she has caught the disease again. The Epstein-Barr virus is a member of the herpesvirus family and one of the most common viruses in humans. Most people are infected with it at some point in their lives. It's best known for causing infectious mononucleosis, commonly called 'mono', which results in fatigue, fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes. In some cases, EBV does not entirely disappear after the initial infection. It can remain dormant in the body and reactivate later, especially during stress, overtraining, or immune suppression. When reactivated, it can lead to severe fatigue, body aches, mental fog, and other symptoms that can persist for weeks or even months. This makes it especially challenging for athletes, whose performance depends on peak physical condition.Erin Blanchfield, who had been preparing for the biggest fight of her career, expressed her frustration after the cancellation. In a post-event interview, Blanchfield said, 'I feel like I've been robbed of a chance to prove myself. I was ready. I trained hard for this. This was supposed to be my statement fight.'Blanchfield didn't hold back when addressing Barber's withdrawal. 'It sucks. I don't know what happened. If it was really medical, I hope she's okay. But it's disappointing. We deserve answers, and fans deserve better,' she added. No official word yet on when Barber might return to the octagon. She has not made a public statement about her health or a potential recovery timeline. The UFC has yet to announce whether the bout will be rescheduled.Until then, the women's flyweight division remains on pause.

Departmental inquiry ordered against nine BBMP health officials over alleged Covid bills irregularities

BENGALURU: A departmental investigation has been suggested against nine officials in connection with the alleged irregularities in Covid-related payments and bills in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) during the previous BJP government, the retired Justice Michael D. Cunha committee has recommended. A notice was issued to 28 officers of the corporation due to 'doubts' in the purchase of medicines and medical supplies during the COVID period. It was directed that notices be given to the corporation's engineers, doctors, and officers of the accounts department to provide explanations. After receiving the notices, 28 officials responded with documents. Following verification of the officers' replies, 19 were given a clean chit. However, the department ordered an investigation of the remaining nine officers by BBMP health officials. 'These are officials in the BBMP health department who failed to give clarity over expenses and bills, and hence the matter was escalated to the BBMP Administration Department for a departmental inquiry. If these officials fail to clarify the doubts during the probe by the administration department, action will be initiated,' said Sirajuddin Madani, Chief Health Officer. Notices have also been issued to 15 private companies that supplied materials during the COVID period. The committee has suggested the recovery of Rs 13 crore paid to these 15 private companies as excess. This is not the first time BBMP health officials have landed in controversy. Earlier, Dr Kalpana, Deputy Health Officer in BBMP South Zone, was placed under suspension over approving an inflated bill of Rs 9.72 crore instead of the actual amount of Rs 2.27 crore. The amount was paid to contractors engaged in supplying food to the Indira Canteen. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Officers and Employees Association President, Amruth Raj, stated that it is time the black sheep in BBMP are shunted out. 'The officials involved in COVID and other scams in the BBMP—those involved in dereliction of duty—should be suspended and jailed to keep the BBMP clean,' said Amruth Raj.

Health data cover up? 100+ US government datasets quietly altered without warning

'Gender' Replaced With 'Sex' in Majority of Edits Change Logs Claim 'No Changes,' Despite Edits Live Events Why It Matters for Public Health Researchers Warn of Misinterpretation in Gender-Sensitive Data Edits Followed White House Directive Targeting 'Gender Ideology' Public Trust at Risk if Data Integrity Isn't Protected FAQs (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel Over 100 US government health datasets were quietly altered earlier this year, and most of those changes were made without public notice, leaving major transparency and trust issues about official data, as per a report.A recent study in The Lancet went deep into 232 datasets from major organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Department of Veterans Affairs, according to Psypost. The study, "Data manipulation within the US Federal Government ," was authored by Janet Freilich and Aaron S. Kesselheim, as reported by they discovered was that almost half of the datasets had had wording adjustments that were not mentioned anywhere in the formal change logs, as per the report. The most frequent edit was replacing the term "gender" with "sex," as reported by READ: Epstein files stay sealed — Republicans block move to force Trump admin to reveal details To find this out, the researchers compared existing datasets to older versions held online, as per the report. In most instances, despite the dataset appearing to have been recently updated, the change logs indicated nothing had been changed, according to Psypost. For instance, a Veterans Affairs document monitoring veteran medical care changed "Gender" to "Sex" in its headers and titles, but its change log doggedly reported, "No changes have been archived yet," as reported by is important to know because these datasets are the foundation of millions of public health studies on everything from mental illness to chronic disease and health disparities, according to the report. When words like "gender" and "sex" are incorrectly interchanged without definition, it is nearly impossible to tell whether changes in the data indicate true changes in the population or merely a quiet rewrite behind the scenes, as per the Psypost READ: Trump's tariff threat could trigger recession as August 1 deadline looms, and he might not blink this time This is not merely a statistical concern, as gender and sex are not the same thing: gender is social identity, and sex is biological categorisation, according to the report. A large number of transgender and non-binary individuals have identities that differ from the sex at birth, as reported by Psypost. Thus, if suddenly one dataset starts remapping "gender" to "sex" without explaining why it was altered, researchers cannot interpret results properly, according to the report. That confusion might compel public health officials to make decisions based on false information, as per timing of the edits is also significant because the edits primarily occurred between January and March of 2025, shortly following a White House directive that called on federal agencies to drop language linked to what it referred to as "gender ideology," as reported by Psypost. Although there is no official confirmation about the dataset edits being carried out in response to the White House's directive, but the pattern indicates a coordinated effort, according to researchers indicate that this lack of transparency jeopardises both scientific integrity and public trust, as per the report. They call for more robust systems for tracking and justifying all changes to data so that everyone, from policymakers to ordinary citizens, can clearly see what's been changed and why, according to Psypost. They also propose that independent groups and researchers maintain their own versions of datasets and compare them with archives on a regular basis, as per the report.'Sex' usually refers to biology (male or female), while 'gender' includes social identity (like non-binary or transgender). Swapping them without clarification can distort federal agency has publicly confirmed the edits or explained the reason behind them.

Insomnia could be reason behind reduced quality of life among people with ADHDL: Study

New Delhi: Insomnia, or sleep disturbances, arising out of ADHD's impulsivity could be the reason why adults with ADHD symptoms experience a reduced quality of life, according to a new study. Usually diagnosed during childhood and teenage, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is marked with restlessness, hyperactivity, and short attention spans. It is the neuro-developmental disorder linked with a delayed maturing of prefrontal cortex of the brain, which is crucial for attention and focus. Researchers, led by those from the University of Southampton, UK, and the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience, found that ADHD symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity in adults were associated with more severe insomnia, a lower sleep quality and preference for going to bed and waking up late. The study, published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Mental Health, looked at data from the Netherlands Sleep Registry, an online survey of more than ten thousand adult participants. Responses from 1,364 middle-aged and older adult participants on questions about ADHD traits, sleep disturbances, circadian factors, depression and quality of life were analysed. "We know that sleep disruption can impact neurobehavioural and cognitive systems, including attention and emotional regulation. At the same time, sleep disruption may arise from ADHD-related impulsivity and hyperactivity, suggesting a reinforcing cycle between sleep disorders and ADHD," senior author Sarah L Chellappa, associate professor of psychology at the University of Southampton, said. People with ADHD are diagnosed with sleep disorder about eight times more than the general population, which can show up as a delayed onset of sleep, moving more while asleep, daytime sleepiness or a shorter night-time sleep, the authors said. "We show that adult ADHD traits and insomnia severity were significant predictors of lower (quality of life) and that insomnia severity mediated this association," they wrote. Differences in cognition or thought processes among people with ADHD, along with those in sleep and body clock-related genes in ADHD could be potential mechanisms, the team said. "Adults with ADHD traits may be more likely to have low sleep quality, insomnia complaints, and low mood levels, all of which lead to reduced life satisfaction," co-author Samuele Cortese from the University of Southampton said. "There needs to be more research to understand this complex interplay. By improving our understanding, we could uncover treatment options that improve the quality of life of people with ADHD," Cortese said. PTI
