Speculation a 'kick in the guts' for Knights coach

Yahoo19-07-2025
Adam O'Brien admits it's a "kick in the guts" to have his job become the subject of a media circus, insisting he remains the right man to coach Newcastle.
O'Brien's future has come under question across six NRL seasons at the Knights but the coach was nevertheless taken aback by reports this week that claimed management had all but decided he would be fired after 2025.
"It was a little bit of a shock on the Monday," he said.
"But since then I can honestly say, I haven't let it consume me one bit."
Injury-hit Newcastle have regressed from elimination finalists in 2024 to this season's worst attacking side by the numbers.
Reports have claimed only a late season resurgence will save O'Brien's job, and that rise would have to come without injured talismans Fletcher Sharpe, Dylan Lucas and Kalyn Ponga.
Ponga himself quashed rumours that he could be on his way out of the Hunter earlier this week.
Coach O'Brien understood pressure came with the territory of being an NRL coach, but said it had been affecting those close to him.
"You're put in a position where you understand that there's going to be pressure. A lot rides on winning footy games," he said.
"It's not ideal for your loved ones and your family, and friends. It affects them.
"I wouldn't be human if you probably get a little bit sick of being kicked in the guts.
"But at the end of the day, (worrying) is not going to help the playing group. That is always at the forefront of my mind: Do my bit to help these boys win footy games."
O'Brien has taken the Knights to finals in four of his previous five seasons in charge, only missing out in 2022, for a 44.9 per cent win record all up.
But Newcastle only appeared a chance at the premiership as dark horses in 2023, when they reached the second week of the play-offs.
O'Brien would not confirm whether he had addressed the media reports with Knights management, only saying he still believed he was the right man to coach the team.
"I do," he said.
"Dealing in speculation from media outlets isn't helpful. I've just taken the approach that I'm the coach of the club right now, I haven't wavered in my commitment or my work ethic.
"It's a deep honour for me to be the coach of the club and I just present every day like that."
O'Brien is adamant the headlines will not distract the Newcastle playing group from Sunday's home game against the depleted Warriors.
"The team were quite clear that none of that will affect our performance on the weekend. We won't let it be a distraction," he said.
"We can't deal in speculation, all we can do is control our preparation for the game."

Harrison expected to miss Leigh, becomes dad for second time

FORWARD James Harrison is not expected to be available for selection when Warrington Wolves return to action against Leigh Leopards on Friday. He was a surprise omission from The Wire side which lost 20-14 at Castleford Tigers last time out. Wolves chiefs have since confirmed Harrison was sidelined with a shoulder injury that is expected to keep him out for 'a few weeks'. Meanwhile, Harrison and his partner Sophie are celebrating the birth of their second child. Herbie George Harrison came into the world last week, weighing 8lbs 4ozs. Luca, who is almost three, now has a younger brother to dote on. Teammate Matty Ashton and his partner Lauren Spottiswood have revealed they are expecting their first child, due in January. Ashton and Ben Currie were spotted in the crowd supporting Warrington darts king and Wire fan Luke 'The Nuke' Littler during his World Matchplay semi-final success over Josh Rock at Winter Gardens in Blackpool on Saturday night.

Knicks reserve guard could see increased role next season

New York Knicks guard Miles McBride could be the biggest beneficiary of Mike Brown being hired as the team's new head coach. Per SNY's Ian Begley, McBride could see an increased role compared to his role under Tom Thibodeau. 'We don't know how Knicks coach Mike Brown will deploy his rotation. But it's logical to think that McBride will play significant minutes with Clarkson and Yabusele,' Begley said. In the past, it would appear at times as though McBride wasn't being utilized properly in the rotation. Now with Brown, it's possible that McBride could see an increased role in the offense. McBride has the ability to play in several different types of lineups for the Knicks thanks to his ability to space the floor and defend at a high level. McBride himself spoke with Begley about sharing the second unit with new acquisitions Jordan Clarkson, and Guerschon Yabusele. 'Obviously (Clarkson's) a vet in this league. He's done great things,' McBride said, per Begley. 'Obviously, he can fill up the stat sheet and really score the ball at a high level. And obviously adding Geurschon as well. I think everybody's seen what he did in the Olympics and carrying that momentum into (last season), so we're really excited about him.' 'I feel like we're going to play fast, we're going to be using a lot of different guys,' he added. 'If you saw the Finals, they (Oklahoma City and Indiana) had a lot of depth on both teams, and I feel like we're all NBA guys. So if you're on the team, I feel like you're able to help out.' McBride averaged a career-best 9.5 points per game last season off the bench, and shot 37 percent from three-point range. Next year could be a breakout season for him should he get an increased role.

Broncos legend rejects claim about Reece Walsh in pointed swipe at two teammates

Corey Parker has rejected suggestions Reece Walsh was solely to blame for the Broncos' loss to Parramatta on Friday night, saying the club's veteran leaders should bear the brunt of the backlash. Brisbane were expected to trounce the lowly Eels at Suncorp Stadium, but instead came away with a 22-20 loss. Walsh made a number of costly errors at the back, most notably when he failed to catch a bomb on the full which led to a Parramatta try. He was then found to be marginally off-side on what would have been the winning for the Broncos at the death. The young fullback has copped plenty of criticism for his performance, but according to Parker it's his veteran teammates who should take more responsibility. Parker pinpointed halfback Adam Reynolds and hooker Ben Hunt as two leaders of the club who didn't stand up on Friday night, and didn't pull Walsh into line when he went a bit erratic. "There are moments in any sport when you need leadership," the Broncos legend said on SEN radio on Monday. "There comes a time when your most experienced players and your leaders have to stand up and make some bold calls, and they have to stay on task. "The Broncos have got Adam Reynolds at 35 years of age and over 300 games of experience. He's the No.7. He's what you would think is the leader of the football side. He's the captain, and he plays a real pivotal position. "Then you've got Ben Hunt at No.9 with just shy of 350 games. So between those two individuals you've got a collective 651 games between them. We hear so often when the Broncos win or don't win, it's either Reece Walsh has had an ordinary game or Reece Walsh has had a great game. [But] experience in big games and pivotal moments is paramount." RELATED: Stunning development for Cleary brothers as Luai under heavy fire Cameron Munster 'open' to switch to Melbourne Storm's rival Did the Broncos' leaders stand up? Parker pointed out some of the leaders at other clubs who make sure their teammates are held accountable. Parker mentioned Stephen Crichton at the Bulldogs, Tom Dearden at the Cowboys and Harry Grant at the Storm, who stepped up and led his side past the Roosters with Ryan Papenhuyzen, Cameron Munster and Jahrome Hughes out. He added: "You look at the team atop the competition - the Canberra Raiders - wonderful leaders in their football side that don't deviate. Jamal Fogarty has plenty of youth in his team - Xavier Savage and Kaeo Weekes - but he does not deviate from what is required. Kicks to the corners really well and steers his team around the park when they start to get a little shaky. "I want to see the leaders of the Broncos really stand up over the next four or five weeks, and if they can do that, what flows off the back of it will certainly be warranted. You need talent and your best players on the field, but some of the leadership we've seen so far this year has been exceptional (at the top clubs)." Did the bye halt the Broncos' momentum? Parker said the Broncos may have suffered from having the bye in Round 20, which halted their momentum and eventually saw a six-game losing streak snapped. Coach Michael Maguire made a conscious decision to give his players a five-day break, but it might have cost them. The Broncos were leap-frogged by the Panthers and fell to sixth place with the loss - four points behind the Warriors in fourth. Maguire's side will need results to go their way if they're any hope of a top-four finish.
