Broncos legend rejects claim about Reece Walsh in pointed swipe at two teammates

Yahoo7 days ago
Corey Parker has rejected suggestions Reece Walsh was solely to blame for the Broncos' loss to Parramatta on Friday night, saying the club's veteran leaders should bear the brunt of the backlash. Brisbane were expected to trounce the lowly Eels at Suncorp Stadium, but instead came away with a 22-20 loss.
Walsh made a number of costly errors at the back, most notably when he failed to catch a bomb on the full which led to a Parramatta try. He was then found to be marginally off-side on what would have been the winning for the Broncos at the death.
The young fullback has copped plenty of criticism for his performance, but according to Parker it's his veteran teammates who should take more responsibility. Parker pinpointed halfback Adam Reynolds and hooker Ben Hunt as two leaders of the club who didn't stand up on Friday night, and didn't pull Walsh into line when he went a bit erratic.
"There are moments in any sport when you need leadership," the Broncos legend said on SEN radio on Monday. "There comes a time when your most experienced players and your leaders have to stand up and make some bold calls, and they have to stay on task.
"The Broncos have got Adam Reynolds at 35 years of age and over 300 games of experience. He's the No.7. He's what you would think is the leader of the football side. He's the captain, and he plays a real pivotal position.
"Then you've got Ben Hunt at No.9 with just shy of 350 games. So between those two individuals you've got a collective 651 games between them. We hear so often when the Broncos win or don't win, it's either Reece Walsh has had an ordinary game or Reece Walsh has had a great game. [But] experience in big games and pivotal moments is paramount."

Did the Broncos' leaders stand up?
Parker pointed out some of the leaders at other clubs who make sure their teammates are held accountable. Parker mentioned Stephen Crichton at the Bulldogs, Tom Dearden at the Cowboys and Harry Grant at the Storm, who stepped up and led his side past the Roosters with Ryan Papenhuyzen, Cameron Munster and Jahrome Hughes out.
He added: "You look at the team atop the competition - the Canberra Raiders - wonderful leaders in their football side that don't deviate. Jamal Fogarty has plenty of youth in his team - Xavier Savage and Kaeo Weekes - but he does not deviate from what is required. Kicks to the corners really well and steers his team around the park when they start to get a little shaky.
"I want to see the leaders of the Broncos really stand up over the next four or five weeks, and if they can do that, what flows off the back of it will certainly be warranted. You need talent and your best players on the field, but some of the leadership we've seen so far this year has been exceptional (at the top clubs)."
Did the bye halt the Broncos' momentum?
Parker said the Broncos may have suffered from having the bye in Round 20, which halted their momentum and eventually saw a six-game losing streak snapped. Coach Michael Maguire made a conscious decision to give his players a five-day break, but it might have cost them.
The Broncos were leap-frogged by the Panthers and fell to sixth place with the loss - four points behind the Warriors in fourth. Maguire's side will need results to go their way if they're any hope of a top-four finish.

Hollands returns as Blues brace for heartbreaking news

Carlton will welcome Elijah Hollands back to club's AFL program this week but they are bracing to receive bad news when youngster Harry O'Farrell undergoes scans on his injured left knee. O'Farrell suffered a suspected ACL tear after landing awkwardly from a marking contest in Sunday's 27-point loss to Fremantle. The No.40 pick from last year's national draft had made huge progress at the Blues this season, and coach Michael Voss said he was shattered to see the 19-year-old cut down in just his sixth game. The injury came just minutes after O'Farrell had kicked his maiden AFL goal. Harry O'Farrell's first AFL goal 🥹#AFLFreoBlues — Carlton FC (@CarltonFC) August 3, 2025 "The highs and lows of football, it's got a great way of being able to lift you up, and it's got a very nasty way of being able to bring you down as well," Voss said. "But that sort of resilience and grit over time. you learn through your career. "Sometimes you get things when you don't want it to show up, and they show up, and this is what might have shown up for him. "We'll support him. We'll wrap our arms around him. "He's not a massive man yet, but his ability to be able to read the game - he's just a natural footballer. "The players just love playing with him, because he's super reliable." Harry O'Farrell has come from the ground following this contest.#AFLFreoBlues — AFL (@AFL) August 3, 2025 Hollands took leave in March for a personal matter, then returned for a block of five matches before taking another period of indefinite leave in May. The 23-year-old former Sun will return to the AFL program this week with the view of playing in the VFL. "He'll come back into the club this week," Voss said. "He's been hovering around the VFL, doing a bit of that. He'll be back this week and playing VFL football this week." When asked if Hollands could make it back to AFL level before the season ended, Voss replied: "Possibly, but we've only got three games left. "He'll come back and play some VFL football. He's been training pretty hard, so he'll be ready to go." Carlton (7-13) will be back in action on action on Saturday night against Gold Coast at Marvel Stadium, before rounding out their season with matches against Port Adelaide (home) and Essendon.

US overcomes outbreak of ‘acute gastroenteritis' to top swimming medal table at World Aquatics Championships

The United States finished top of the swimming medal table at the World Aquatics Championships on Sunday, overcoming a slow start to its campaign in which several of its swimmers battled an outbreak of 'acute gastroenteritis.' The team capped its championships with a world record in the women's 4x100-meter medley relay on Sunday, marking its ninth gold and 29th total medal as it consolidated first place ahead of Australia's eight gold and 20 total medals. The late surge meant that American swimmers had one more gold and nine more medals in total than they did in last year's championships, even if their overall haul was significantly less than the 38 they won in 2023 and the 45 they claimed in 2022. The team's eventual success came after it had seemed diminished in the opening days, with its spokesperson telling the Associated Press that many of its swimmers were battling 'acute gastroenteritis' they had contracted at a training camp in Thailand. The USA's initial struggles at the championship – it won only five gold medals in the opening six days – drew criticism from some of its former stars, particularly as it came a year after the Paris Olympics where it won its lowest tally of Olympic gold medals in the pool since 1988. Six-time Olympic champion Ryan Lochte posted an image on social media of a tombstone with the epigraph: 'In loving memory of United States Swimming. They set the bar high – until they stopped reaching for it,' which 23-time Olympic champion Michael Phelps reposted with the caption: 'Is this the wake-up call USA Swimming needed?' according to Reuters. The US team wasn't immune to the criticism – Gretchen Walsh, who won three gold medals in Singapore – said she was 'trying to block it out.' 'I think we've been dealing with a lot so it's hard to get the criticism in the first place because I don't think people quite understand the magnitude of everything going on behind the scenes,' she said. In the last two days of the world championships, the US won four gold medals, including Katie Ledecky's thrilling victory in the women's 800m freestyle, which she claimed with a championship-record time. That came a day after Kate Douglass clocked in with her own championship-record time in the women's 200m breaststroke. 'I wanted to just get a gold for Team USA to help our medal count there and I think with the rough week that we've had, I think we've done a great job of coming back and showing that we are here to race,' Douglas said afterward according to World Aquatics. Meanwhile, Canadian sensation Summer McIntosh capped one of the greatest world championships performances of all time on Sunday, winning the women's 400m individual medley to claim her fourth gold medal of the week. The 18-year-old finished in a championship-record 4:25.78, not quite enough to beat her own world record of 4:23.65, but more than seven seconds ahead of her nearest challengers. McIntosh joins Katie Ledecky as the only women ever to have won four individual golds at a world championships, according to NBC Sports. The Canadian was attempting to join Michael Phelps' record of winning five individual golds, but lost to Ledecky in Saturday's 800m freestyle final. In Sunday's 400m individual medley final, Australia's Jenna Forrester and Japan's Mio Narita were tied in a dead heat for silver with times of 4:33.26, while 12-year-old Chinese phenom Yu Zidi was half a second further back and finished in fourth place.

Watch: English golfer hits freak hole-in-one at Women's Open

Mimi Rhodes lit up the final day of the Women's Open with a bizarre hole-in-one that featured the Englishwoman's ball deflecting off her partner's ball before dropping into the cup. Rhodes and the Australia Stephanie Kyriacou were involved in this surreal scene on the 212-yard fifth. Kyriacou played first and her supreme effort looked destined to achieve an ace, itself, before veering away in the final rolls. Just a few inches away, the world No 42 was still booked in for a birdie though. However, with the crowd believing they had witnessed enough drama for one grouping, Rhodes, the 23-year-old from Somerset, stepped up and went pin-chasing. Rhodes's strike was just as well struck, but appeared to be going too fast. That is until it took the billiards route, checking off Kyriacou's and ricocheting into the hole. Hearing the cheers, Rhodes looked bemused before raising her arms in celebration. Kyriacou hugged her, but must have felt slightly aggrieved as, ironically, she had played the better shot. No matter, Kyriacou enjoyed her own hole-in-one on the eighth on Friday. In the commentary booth, Henni Zuel, the former Tour pro, exclaimed: 'Unreal! I hope she buys Steph a nice present. Something more than a drink is deserved there.' Rhodes was being followed by at least 30 of her family and friends from Burnham & Berrow and their faith was emphatically rewarded by the Ladies European Tour rookie, who has already won three times this season. Rhodes's Royal Porthcawl heroics hauled her to four-under and within five of the leader Miyu Yamashita. The incident was reminiscent of Louis Oosthuizen's hole-in-one at the 2016 Masters. On that occasion, the South African's ball used that of JB Holmes as the canon on the 16th at Augusta and it was duly called 'the most incredible ace in major history'. Certainly that has a rival now. Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism.
