National Games in Karachi postponed again
The National Games, scheduled to begin on May 1 in Karachi, have been postponed once again. The reasons cited for the delay include extreme heat and the ongoing intermediate examinations.
The Sindh Olympic Association issued an official notification today to all relevant departments, informing them that the National Games have been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances. The Games were set to begin in just 13 days, and this was Sindh's first opportunity in 18 years to host the prestigious event.
Sardar Muhammad Bux Khan Mahar, chairman of the organising committee, emphasised the necessity of the decision, though specifics remain undisclosed.
Authorities assured updates would follow, with the National Game Secretariat in Karachi coordinating future plans.
The postponement affects thousands of athletes and officials nationwide, prompting calls for patience as logistical adjustments unfold.
Sources revealed that the decision was influenced by the anticipated heatwave and the timing of the exams. However, concerns have been raised over the fact that both the hot weather in May and the exam schedule were already known months in advance.
Insiders also disclosed that the event preparations were far from complete. Most of the grounds and facilities at the sports complexes had not undergone the necessary upgrades. Additionally, the official logo for the National Games had not been finalized, nor had the traditional torch relay been initiated.
The Games were initially planned for February but were postponed to May despite the expected extreme weather conditions. With the latest postponement, a new date for the National Games is yet to be announced.
Earlier last month, it was announced that the Sindh government has finalised all arrangements to host the 35th National Games, a nine-day sporting spectacle which was set to take place here from May 1 to 9.
The SOA had confirmed that President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have been invited to attend the opening and closing ceremonies of the event while the Games' torch relay will be inaugurated by Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.
The Games' swimming competitions was to be held at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) swimming pool and it was said that the plans were underway to construct a new state-of-the-art facility in the province to bolster aquatic sports.
Key measures include enhanced security protocols, dedicated paramedical teams and ambulances on standby at all venues.
However, all these plans and announcements have now become redundant due to the postponements of the Games.

The Ravi River, he noted, is currently safe due to available storage in Indian dams. "There's no flood threat in the Jhelum and Sutlej rivers at present, but the Chenab is at risk," Khan told The Express Tribune. "Flooding could occur if India releases excess water. However, our dams currently have sufficient capacity to manage inflows." Khan added that the ongoing monsoon spell would continue until Friday, July 25, followed by another wet spell at the end of the month. He warned that persistent rainfall, especially in northern areas, could heighten flood risks. "The rainfall is improving dam levels, but the threat remains. Another weather system is expected later this month, which may bring more intense rain," he cautioned. Despite its minimal contribution to global carbon emissions, Pakistan remains one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change. Khan attributed increasing weather unpredictability, cloudbursts, and glacial melt to global climate shifts. "Pakistan's contribution to air pollution is negligible, yet we are among the hardest hit by climate change," he said. "Extreme rainfall and rapid glacier melt are creating hazardous conditions." Addressing recent flooding in Islamabad's Saidpur Village and Chakwal, Khan clarified that these were not cloudburst events. "A cloudburst is defined by over 100mm of rainfall in one hour. In Saidpur, it was prolonged heavy rain over 24 hours," he explained. "The flooding was aggravated by illegal constructions blocking natural drainage channels." "Pakistan's contribution to air pollution is negligible, yet we are among the hardest hit by climate change," he said. "Extreme rainfall and rapid glacier melt are creating hazardous conditions." GLOF Alert The Met Office has issued a high-alert warning for Glacial Lake Outburst Floods in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), where rapid glacier melt and heavy rains threaten to trigger flash floods. "Glacial melt combined with intense rain may cause sudden river surges and flooding in low-lying areas," the Met Department stated in its daily report. It advised all relevant disaster management authorities to remain on high alert.

Qatar bids to host 2036 Olympic Games
DOHA: Doha is bidding host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, authorities said on Tuesday, as the wealthy Gulf state sets its sights on yet another major sport event to diversify its energy-reliant economy. One of the smallest and wealthiest states in the Gulf, Qatar had already hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Should it be chosen, Qatar would become the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to host the Olympic Games, said Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani. 'The official bid submitted by the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games represents a new milestone in Qatar's journey,' he said in a statement shared on the official Qatar News Agency. India's javelin hero Chopra leverages star power as crowds flock to self-titled event
BENGALURU: Olympic javelin star Neeraj Chopra headlined what was billed as India's inaugural world-class field competition on Saturday, living up to his goal of elevating domestic talent while also walking away with another gold medal. Chopra, who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and silver at the 2024 Paris Games, triumphed with a throw of 86.18 meters at the 12-athlete javelin Neeraj Chopra Classic event. He finished ahead of former world champion Julius Yego (silver) and Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage (bronze). 'The biggest target of the competition was to uplift the Indian athletes alongside the international ones. We got the best javelin throwers to this competition,' Chopra told reporters after winning the competition. The event drew more than 14,500 spectators - a figure that delighted Chopra, who has long championed greater public support for track and field events. 'We really wanted people to come and watch track and field,' said Chopra, who has single-handedly raised interest for athletics in India and has more than nine million Instagram followers. 'I always request people to come to the stadiums to cheer athletes as they work really hard. 'Track and field is one of the hardest sporting events. I request people to come and watch nationals as well… because our sport can only grow when people will come and watch us.' The event featured three rounds with six attempts per participant, narrowing the field to eight after the initial round of three throws. Among the five Indian competitors, three advanced to the second round including Chopra, outperforming international athletes such as former Olympic champion Thomas Rohler and the Czech Republic's Martin Konecny. 'We have been doing really well in the sport. They (Indian athletes) were quite happy to get a platform to play alongside the world champions,' the 27-year-old said. 'We also plan to add more events to this competition going forward, which will help the Indian athletes more.' Neeraj Chopra aims to give Indian athletics a boost with Classic meet Among the Indian athletes, apart from Chopra, Asian Athletics Championships silver medallist Sachin Yadav performed well, recording his best throw of 82.33m in the third attempt. 'Sachin could have performed better but he twisted his ankle in his opening throw. Overall, it was good. They will hopefully do well in the future. They are juniors and have time on their hand so will surely do better,' Chopra said.
