Mandeni councillor allegedly demands R100k bribe for tender approval
Two Mandeni councillors are under fire after a leaked recording allegedly captured them demanding a R100 000 bribe for a municipal tender. The recording is said to feature the councillors negotiating the terms of the bribe with a local contractor, sparking widespread outrage and concern among residents and political leaders. Mandeni municipal speaker Phindile Sishi confirmed that the matter has been formally escalated to her office and is currently being addressed internally. 'The municipality reiterates its zero-tolerance stance on corruption and maladministration. We urge all staff and councillors to uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in the execution of their duties,' said Sishi. The names of the councillors implicated in the scandal have not yet been released. Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor in Mandeni, Kuben Naicker, expressed outrage over what he described as 'disturbing and deeply concerning' conduct, reportedly involving an ANC ward councillor. 'Municipal institutions have been reduced to centres of political patronage, tender manipulation and extortion, while residents are left to suffer without access to basic services,' said Naicker. The DA is calling for a full forensic audit of all tenders awarded by the municipality over the past two years to uncover any further irregularities. Grandparents' Day in Alexandra shines light on elderly struggles and support
The Aging with Wisdom Region E Elderly Forum's Grandparents' Day celebration offered a safe platform for Alexandra seniors to openly address their challenges. More than just highlighting their concerns, the event, held at Methodist Church on July 29, guided the elderly toward available resources and support. The forum's secretary, Mamoraka Mogane, emphasised the significance of the gathering. 'As the elderly, we have a lot of problems. So, when we are united like this, we are here to talk about our problems, to advise each other, and to show each other how we can tackle our challenges.' Mogane highlighted that seniors often face financial abuse. She said many rely on South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) grants, only to see their money siphoned off by their unemployed children. 'Children take their Sassa cards. So, today we gathered the elderly, so that, while we celebrate grandparent's day, we may be able to advise them.' Also read: Suspects in DJ Sumbody murder case linked to multiple unsolved assassinations She further explained how they connect struggling seniors with social workers who can step in when home becomes unsafe. 'We have different social workers who work with the elderly. When an elderly person comes to us with a specific problem, we are able to refer them to a social worker. Social workers ensure that they take the troubled elderly to either a retirement home or an alternative place that is safe.' The forum also urges seniors to join elderly organisations, and to speak up at meetings. 'If they keep quiet, the stress builds up. We want them to share so we can help.' For Mogane and the forum, the day was meant to demonstrate their support, and show available help for the seniors who are grappling with a myriad of challenges. Family carries coffin into KZN bank to protest delayed funeral payout
A grieving family brought a dead body in a coffin into Capitec Bank at KwaDukuza Mall on Tuesday in protest over an alleged funeral insurance payout delay. North Coast Courier reports that, according to the family, they filed the claim last Wednesday and were initially told payment would be processed within 48 hours. They were later informed funds would only be available by August 22, nearly a month later. Feeling helpless, the family made the drastic decision to take the deceased to the bank to highlight the emotional and financial burden caused by the delay. The incident shocked shoppers and staff, drawing concern and sympathy from onlookers. A 43-year-old woman, sister of the 25-year-old deceased, expressed deep disappointment in the bank. 'We have to bury my sister this Saturday. Since they say they will only pay on the 22nd of next month, we brought her body to prove she has passed. I am worried because my whole family is insured with this bank.' This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in KwaDukuza. In 2019, a family from Madundube took a body to an Old Mutual branch under similar circumstances. Old Mutual said the claim had already been processed but acknowledged delays and apologised. KwaDukuza Mall management distanced itself from the matter. 'This was a private dispute between the family and Capitec Bank, which is an independent tenant operating within the mall premises,' said mall manager Siyabonga Tembe. Capitec Bank had not responded to requests for comment at the time of publishing. Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel.
