Tribute paid to former bus driver killed alongside wife in cliff fall
Former colleagues of a bus driver who died alongside his wife after their car plunged off a cliff on the Isle of Wight have expressed their sadness.
The incident occurred on Friday evening near The Needles, a well-known group of chalk sea stacks, when their Ford Mondeo left the road.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed the deaths of a 67-year-old man, a 66-year-old woman, and their two dachshunds.
The deceased have been identified locally as John King, a former Southern Vectis bus driver, and his wife, Lynn.
John King's former colleagues said they were "saddened to learn" of the "tragic" incident.
Richard Tyldsley, Southern Vectis general manager, said: 'John King was not an employee of Southern Vectis at the time of his death, having left earlier in the year.
'John had worked for the company as a network driver for two and half years prior to leaving. We are saddened to learn of this tragic event and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.'
A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: 'We can confirm the death of two people, a woman and a man, aged 66 and 67 respectively, following an incident at The Needles on the Isle of Wight on Friday June 6.
'We were called at 7.21pm after a Ford Mondeo, which was being driven along Alum Bay New Road, left the road, came off the cliff top and came to rest in the water below.
'Two dogs, both dachshunds, were also in the car and died in the incident.
'Formal identification procedures are ongoing, but next of kin have been notified. A post-mortem examination will take place on Tuesday June 10.
'As part of the ongoing investigation into the incident, which has been referred to the coroner, officers have been carrying out inquiries at an address on Arctic Road, Cowes, to help them to establish what happened.'

College bus river crash investigation continues
An investigation is continuing after a double-decker bus carrying college students plunged into a river. The bus was seen swerving through oncoming traffic and ploughed through railings on the wrong side of Bishopstoke Road in Eastleigh, Hampshire, at about 10:00 BST on Thursday. Work to remove the bus, seen severely damaged to the front, was carried out overnight with the bus lifted onto the road in the early hours. The bus has been towed away and the road is fully open. The driver and one of 19 Barton Peveril Sixth Form College students on board were seriously injured. A witness said the driver reported that his brakes and accelerator failed at the same time. Kelly West, who was one of the first on the scene, said: "It does appear that what he was saying was that the brakes didn't work and the accelerator was jammed because it was horrifically fast, it was speeding massively." The Bluestar bus crashed into a lamp-post, shattering a windscreen, before leaving the road, according to student Freddie Sampson, who was on the top deck. The 18-year-old said: "It was like we couldn't stop and had to weave through traffic trying not to hit any cars and then the bus driver lost control - we went flying into the river." Five people, including the bus driver who was initially trapped, were taken to hospital for treatment, police said. Double-decker bus carrying students plunges into river in England in 'terrifying' crash
LONDON — A double-decker bus carrying high school students plunged into a river in southern England on Thursday, sending the driver and four teens to the hospital and leaving more than a dozen others with minor injures, officials said. The bus was bound for Barton Peveril Sixth Form College, a school for 16- to 18-year-olds, when it went off a road in Eastleigh and plunged into the River Itchen. The cause of the crash was being investigated by police and the bus company. 'It must have been terrifying,' said Inspector Andy Tester of the Hampshire Constabulary. All 19 passengers on board were either able to get off the bus or were rescued, police said. The bus driver and one student had serious injuries but were expected to survive. Police said there was no indication as to why the bus veered off the road. But a woman who said she heard a screeching sound and saw the crash said the driver told her he couldn't stop. 'I heard some noise, I looked out of the window and he just came careening into the river,' Kelly West said. 'It felt very fast and obviously he just went straight through the barriers and into the river.' West rushed to the scene and found the driver trapped and panicking. She reassured him that help was on the way. 'He said the brakes failed and the accelerator was jammed and that he was trying to avoid cars,' West said. The bus was sitting upright in the river, next to a bridge, water up to its axels. Its front windows were smashed and mud was splattered on its side. A large section of bridge railing was missing. West said she helped some of the shaken students get off the bus and to her garden. About 14 students were treated at the scene by paramedics, the South Central Ambulance Service said. Two helicopters, five ambulances and fire crews responded to the crash. The Bluestar Bus said it did not immediately know the circumstances of the crash.

After Minnesota shootings, Mass. lawmaker says threats are "part of the fabric of our jobs"
Minnesota Rep. Melissa Hortman, a Harvard Kennedy School alumna, was remembered by faculty this weekend following her tragic death. Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed early Saturday morning at their home. Minnesota State Rep. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were also shot and are recovering. After a 36-hour manhunt, authorities captured Vance Boelter, who they believe is responsible for the attack. Boelter was found in the woods near his home in Green Isle, Minnesota. Harvard Kennedy School professor Richard Parker remembered Hortman as a kind and bright student. "She had a disarming charm," Parker said. "I could only describe it as just a Midwestern decency, if that registers." Parker is still grappling with her loss days after the attack. "The idea that one of my students would be assassinated is beyond, I can't tell you," he said. "I'm still emotional about it now." Threats of violence Lawmakers told WBZ that threats of violence have increasingly become a part of their professional reality. "It has become part of the fabric of our jobs, which is a very dangerous and sad commentary on political life in this country," said House Minority Whip Rep. Katherine Clark. "You should be able to have a delivery come to your door that is a mistake and not have it set this dread that this could be someone at your door trying to harm your family." At a community event in Lynn, Massachusetts, Rep. Seth Moulton expressed concern about the growing political divide. "There is a connection here between the rise in political violence and the start of this big trend in 2016," Rep. Moulton said. "But we need to keep setting the example of how we can bring people together and not further divide this country." Rep. Moulton added that the threats lawmakers face creates a daily fear for him and his family.
