
Fujairah to build 77km rainwater drainage network
The move, on the directive of Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Ruler of Fujairah, will also feature the development of 31km of the emirate's road network.
The project covers several roads in Dibba Al Fujairah, Al Hail, Qarat, Qidfa, Wadi Al Sidr, Seiji, Thuban, Habhab, Al Qarya, Wadi Sahm, Al Farfar and Awhala.
Salem Mohammed Ali Al Maksah, director of the Fujairah Public Works and Agriculture Department, said that, as well as the 77km drainage network, two new road tunnels will be built. One will be in the Al Sharia area with a length of 1.2km, while the other will run for 1.4km alongside Sheikh Khalifa General Hospital.
He said that under the project additional road lighting, signage, speed bumps, side parking and pedestrian crossings with traffic lights would be created on the Corniche, Sheikh Zayed and Al Ghurfa roads. He added that this would help regulate traffic and ensure public safety for drivers.

Dubai Municipality has completed a sweeping series of landscaping and afforestation projects across major roads and intersections in the emirate during the first half of 2025, investing AED190m ($51.7m) to beautify more than three million square metres of urban space. The works are part of Dubai's wider Green Dubai initiative and align with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability, improving quality of life, and reinforcing the city's status as a global leader in urban innovation. The landscaping efforts covered key corridors and entry points to the city, including Al Khail Road and Latifa bint Hamdan Street; Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan and Tripoli Street; Sheikh Rashid Street to Al Mina Road; 7th Interchange of Sheikh Zayed Road (Abu Dhabi entry) and Al Khawaneej and Al Amardi Street. Dubai Municipality beauty projects In total, the Municipality planted more than 300,000 trees and seedlings, along with 222,500sq m of ground covers and flowers. The beauty projects also incorporated smart, sustainable irrigation systems featuring underground pump designs to optimise surface space. These systems are connected to remote-control networks supported by Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, enabling real-time monitoring and water-use efficiency to ensure sustainable irrigation practices. The projects incorporated the planting of native trees such as sidr, ghaf, and neem, alongside ornamental varieties including chorisia, washingtonia, royal poinciana, millingtonia, albizia, and bougainvillaea. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of the Municipality, said: 'Our aim is to reinforce Dubai's distinctive urban and aesthetic identity and solidify its position as a leading sustainable global city. 'We seek to offer a vibrant and healthy living environment that upholds the highest standards of quality of life for residents and visitors, while maintaining a harmonious balance between the urban, architectural, and environmental landscape.' In addition to greenery, Dubai Municipality integrated architectural design elements to elevate the city's visual identity. At the Al Khail and Latifa bint Hamdan intersection, vertical lighting installations inspired by traditional Arab architecture were added. These lights change colour to mark national events and blend with surrounding landscape design. Hamdan Bin Zayed hails President's support for EAD
Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), commended the unwavering support and guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE. Sheikh Hamdan affirmed that this steadfast backing has enabled the agency to achieve remarkable progress through a diverse portfolio of strategic projects and initiatives, all aligned with its vision to conserve fish stocks and ensure their sustainability for future generations. This came during his visit to the headquarters of EAD, in the presence of Sheikh Hazza Bin Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Managing Director of EAD, Nasser Mohammed Al Mansouri, Undersecretary of the Ruler's Representative Court in Al Dhafra Region and Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of the agency. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan commended the pioneering achievement of EAD in raising the sustainable fishing index from 8.9% in 2018 to 97.4% by the end of 2024. This places Abu Dhabi first globally in this index, as EAD has implemented comprehensive, globally informed measures and procedures for sustainable recovery of fish stocks. Key actions include regulating fishing activities through the adoption of sustainable gear, managing recreational fishing, and establishing six marine reserves within the Sheikh Zayed Protected Areas Network to oversee and control fishing practices. EAD has also advanced the sustainable aquaculture sector in Abu Dhabi. To further enhance fish stocks, the agency has undertaken coral reef restoration and installed artificial structures as part of the Abu Dhabi Coral Gardens initiative. The EAD team also presented the Dalma Fish Project to him, an initiative that cultivates local fish in marine cages and stands as the first in the Middle East to integrate artificial intelligence into aquaculture practices. During the presentation, the team highlighted several of the agency's most innovative initiatives, including the use of AI in fisheries management, which is the first-of- its-kind globally. This technology enables the identification of fish species and the estimation of their size and weight, contributing to more effective data collection and the sustainable development of the fisheries sector. Sheikh Hamdan concluded the visit by praising EAD's ambitious developmental vision and its unwavering commitment to advancing environmental sustainability across the emirate. He highlighted the agency's impactful policies, continuous pursuit of innovation, and strong engagement with partners, fishermen, and community members as key drivers in achieving the emirate's objectives, particularly the long-term sustainability of fish stocks.
