Bootleg liquor unit busted in Suryapet
Officials seized massive quantities of materials used in the production of adulterated liquor, including 38 Mc Dowell's whiskey quarter bottles, 38 cartons, 42.8 kilogram of whiskey bottle caps, 56.3 kg of generic caps, over 7,800 labels, six 200-litre steel jugs among others. The estimated value of the seized items is approximately ₹20 lakh.
The accused were identified as S. Mahesh Kumar from Durgi in Palnadu district, and Prakash, the owner of the rice mill in Ramapuram. Other suspects - Siva Shankar, Mallikarjun Rao, Sharanjit Singh, and R., are currently lodged in a jail in Andhra Pradesh.
Meanwhile, efforts are underway to trace Srinivas, alias Abdul Kalam, identified as a key figure in the racket.
According to Excise Enforcement Director Shahnawaz Qasim, the unit was using adulterated rice as part of the production process and was replicating branded products with counterfeit labels and packaging. He noted that similar operations had previously been exposed in Andhra Pradesh, where several individuals involved in fake liquor networks were arrested.
The department's vigilance stems from past incidents, including the 2022 episode in which residents in areas under Ibrahimpatnam, Bhongir, Ramannapet and Nampally excise stations reported stomach ailments after consuming suspected Royal Stag whisky. Investigations then revealed counterfeit liquor in circulation.

1 2 Jamshedpur: East Singhbhum administration has seized 464 tonnes of sand, which were illegally mined from the riverbeds in violation of the National Green Tribunal's (NGT) four-month annual ban which came into effect from June 1, officials here said. Deputy commissioner Karn Satyarthi said a special task force (STF), which was constituted to enforce the ban, carried out 15 raids districtwide and seized 464 tonnes of illegally mined sand. Satyarthi on Thursday chaired a meeting with the STF personnel and instructed them to be more vigilant in rural areas like Baharagora and Gurabenda where sand mining by mafias is more frequent. District officials 15 vehicles, being used to transport illegally mined sand, were impounded. Nine FIRs were lodged in connection with the illegal trade activities along with a fine amount of Rs 3.33 lakh collected from offenders. Notably, there is an annual NGT ban on sand mining which is effective throughout the state from June 10 to Oct 15. As per the NGT orders the deputy commissioners of respective districts have been assigned the task for the implementation of the prohibitory orders. The officials have seized 66 vehicles in the past few months in this connection. Satyarthi also called for better coordination between various govt departments when raids are conducted against sand mafias, so that those involved can be weeded out completely. He also directed officials to ensure that in the brick kilns operating in the district no minors are employed. A strict vigil must be kept on the workforce of the kilns as there were allegations that few were violating rules and hiring minors at cheaper rate, the DC added.

The team intercepted an SUV allegedly being used to transport 336.4 grams of MDMA by the accused -- Prakash (28) and Prem Prakash (28) -- residents of Phalodi district. Police said the two intended to sell the MDMA in smaller quantities within Jaisalmer town. Shivhare said the crackdown was part of a statewide anti-narcotics drive. The suspects are being interrogated to uncover further links in the supply and distribution chain. According to police, Prakash has a previous case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act registered against him at Mandore police station. Further investigation is underway, they added.

Over 26,000 bottles of cough syrup seized, 1 arrested
Cuttack: The special task force (STF) in collaboration with the drugs control department seized 26,658 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup from courier hubs in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. The operation, conducted on Aug 1, led to the arrest of Ansuman Abhijit Sahoo, alias Raja, from Bharatpur in Bhubaneswar. Acting on a tip-off, authorities raided a private firm in Badambadi, Cuttack, and another in Mancheswar, Bhubaneswar. They recovered 13,158 bottles from Cuttack and 13,500 from Bhubaneswar, each containing 100ml of cough syrup. "Total market value of the seized consignment is estimated at Rs 52.78 lakh," said Dharmadev Puhan, assistant drugs controller, Cuttack. Sahoo was apprehended while attempting to receive the consignment. Investigations revealed that he had forged documents of a pharmaceutical company in Cuttack to procure the cough syrup for unauthorised sale. A case has been registered under the NDPS Act, 1985, and Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. Authorities are conducting further investigations to find out if more persons are involved in the operation. The seized cough syrup was manufactured by a company in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh. "We are intensifying surveillance across the state to curb the misuse of pharmaceutical narcotics. More coordinated actions will follow," said DSP (STF), Pradeep Kumar Rout.
