Grass fires again disrupt Japanese Grand Prix practice as Lando Norris sets pace

Yahoo05-04-2025
Final practice at the Japanese Grand Prix was again disrupted by grass fires at the side of the track as Lando Norris set the pace.
Friday's second session was halted twice due to the issue, with dry grass catching fire from the sparks thrown up by the skid blocks under the cars.
The FIA said on Friday evening that preventative measures, including dampening the grass and stationing specific response teams around the track, had been taken.
But it took just six minutes for Saturday's running in the Suzuka sunshine to be brought to a halt as marshals were sent out with fire extinguishers to deal with more flames.

The problem returned with six minutes of the hour-long session remaining as the red flag was brought out for a second time.
With warm weather forecast for the rest of Saturday, it could prove to be an issue which affects qualifying later in the afternoon.
McLaren have won both races so far this season – one each for Norris and Oscar Piastri – and both topped a practice session on Friday.
The pair duelled it out again for the fastest time and it was Norris who topped the standings, just 0.026 seconds ahead of the Australian.

The Championship leader did not have it all his own way.
Norris had a few struggles on Friday before topping the standings in the opening running.
He was again off the track at Degner two on Saturday before putting in his fastest lap.
Mercedes' George Russell again showed signs that he could be the man to take the fight to the McLaren duo as he finished third fastest, just over a tenth off the pace.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was the fourth fastest but over four tenths off Norris' time, with Max Verstappen fifth ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

Alpine's Jack Doohan took part in the session after his heavy crash at the start of FP2 on Friday.
The team confirmed all parts on the car had been replaced other than the power unit, after the high-speed crash which they said was caused by a failure to close the DRS heading into turn one.
Qualifying for Sunday's race begins at 1500 local time (0700 BST).

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Danny Rohl to leave the club

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is to leave the beleaguered Championship club today. An agreement has been reached for the 36-year-old to depart for free and Rohl has informed players and staff of the situation. Rohl is free to pursue other opportunities immediately, but has no fresh job lined up and is expected to take time to consider his next step in management. Advertisement Wednesday, who are run by owner Dejphon Chansiri, have had cashflow issues for some time. The EFL has given Wednesday a three-window transfer ban for late payments to players, staff and HMRC, and has charged Chansiri for the late salary payments in March and May. The club has appealed against these sanctions. The German has impressed during his time with Wednesday — his first managerial role — having joined the club following spells as an assistant with Bayern Munich and the Germany national team. He was also previously at Southampton, working alongside Ralph Hasenhuttl between December 2018 and August 2019. Rohl took charge of Sheffield Wednesday in October 2023 after the club had dismissed Xisco Munoz following their worst ever start to a season; the Championship side were destined for relegation, picking up just two points from their opening 10 league matches. But Rohl won 15 of the remaining 36 games, drawing six, and guided them to a 20th-place finish on 53 points, three points above the drop zone. Under Rohl this season, Wednesday are currently ninth in the Championship table, just five points off the play-off places.

Wrexham eye Sheffield United's Wales striker Moore

Wales forward Kieffer Moore is among a number of players Wrexham are interested in, manager Phil Parkinson has confirmed. Moore, 32, joined Sheffield United on a three-year deal in July 2024 and scored five goals in 28 Championship appearances for the Blades last season. Wrexham, promoted back to the second tier of English football for the first time in 44 years, have been linked with the 49-times capped international. "Kieffer's under contract at Sheffield United. He's one of a number of players we've looked at over the summer," Parkinson said. "Like I said, the landscape changes in the transfer market very quickly from one week to the next. "We're looking at lots of options here and abroad." Wrexham have signed goalkeeper Danny Ward, forward Ryan Hardie, defender Liberato Cacace, midfielders George Thomason and Lewis O'Brien and forward Josh Windass during the close season. Parkinson said the club have had dialogue over the idea of signing Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen, but it "had not gone further". The Wrexham boss is still hoping to add to his squad before their Championship opener at Southampton on Saturday, 9 August. "Obviously in an ideal world you want all your signers in prior to pre-season to work with," Parkinson told BBC Sport Wales. "But it just doesn't work like that. People sometimes say, why doesn't it? "It's just a variety of reasons - clubs don't want to sell players, competition for players, negotiations over transfer fee or wages. "Of course, ideally, we'd like to make a couple more additions. Is that going to happen before the start of the season? It's difficult to say. "But the most important thing is by the end of August we've got a squad in here which we feel can compete."

Australia's Caribbean cricket tour ends with a perfect 8-0 record in tests and T20s

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -- Australia completed a sweep of the Twenty20 international cricket series with a three-wicket victory over West Indies on Monday to finish its Caribbean tour with an 8-0 record. Australia went into the last game on a 7-match winning streak following the 3-0 test series sweep and victories in the first four of the T20 internationals. It was Australia's first sweep of a five-game T20 series and only the second at the most elite level after India's in New Zealand in 2019-20. 'To be honest, I didn't expect 5-0,' Australia captain Mitchell Marsh said. The sweep "was something we spoke about after the fourth game. We knew no Australian team had done it. 'It'll be something we're very proud of. Across the board over the five games, we played some really good cricket.' After winning the toss for the eighth straight time, Australia sent the home team in to bat and dismissed West Indies for 170 two balls short of the alloted 20 overs. Shimron Hitmyer's 52 from 31 balls and Sherfane Rutherford's 35 off 17 propped up the innings but the target wasn't big enough to put genuine pressure on the Australian batters. Ben Dharshuis took 3-41 and Nathan Ellis finished with 2-32, while spinner Adam Zampa returned 1-20 in his 100th T20 international after taking a wicket and having a chance dropped off his bowling in the penultimate over. The Australians reached 173-7 with 18 balls to spare, with a 63-run fifth-wicket partnership between Mitchell Owen (37 off 17 deliveries) and Cameron Green (32 off 18) stabilizing the innings. Aaron Hardie finished not out on 28. West Indies had Australia in trouble in the opening powerplay with Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph taking two wickets apiece, but the runs kept flowing. Holder dismissed Glenn Maxwell for a golden duck, the first ball of the second over, when the Australian allrounder swung at a ball that shaped away and edged to short third-man where Jediah Blades juggled the catch but held the second grab. Holder also removed Josh Inglis (10) at the end of the second over. Joseph bowled Marsh (14) as Australia slipped to 29-3 after 2.2 overs and, after on onslaught of sixes, he had Tim David (30 from 12 balls) caught in the deep as Australia slipped to 60-4 in the fifth over. From there, Owen and Green dominated with a succession of sixes, including one by Owen that landed on the roof on a pavilion. Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein was finally introduced to the attack to change the pace, and had an immediate impact with his second delivery to dismiss Owen and break up the important partnership. Hosein also dismissed Green and Ben Dwarshuis to return 3-17. Australia had a three-wicket win to open the T20 series before Josh Inglis and Cameron Green spearheaded an eight-wicket victory that spoiled Andre Russell's last game for West Indies in the second game at Kingston, Jamaica. The tourists then clinched the series on the back of a 37-ball century by Tim David in St. Kitts on Friday before Inglis and Green again combined to help them win the fourth game. 'A lot of guys had great series,' Green, who batted at No. 4 and was voted player of the series, said. 'We've got about half a team who're allrounders. That's the beauty of what we're trying to build here. A lot of depth.' The sweep, he said, was a 'massive' boost ahead of next year's T20 World Cup. 'You always want to win every game you can. T20 can be a bit of a lottery at times, so to build a bit of consistency is important," he said. "Good signs.' The Australians will host South Africa in a T20 series next month, and West Indies takes on Pakistan in another home series involving three T20s and three one-day internationals.
