Honour for CNMCH maternity facility
Kolkata: The state-run Calcutta National Medical College (CNMC) scored remarkably well in the Labour Room Quality Improvement Initiative (LAQSHYA) during a recent assessment by the National Health Mission under the health ministry. With 97.5% on labour room quality, health officials said it is among the best scores given to the gynaecology and obstetrics departments of govt hospitals in the country. The assessment was done across all govt institutes in the country with the aim of improving maternity services. CNMC also scored 90% for its quality work in the gynaecology OT. "The CNMC score is the highest among all medical colleges in the state and on a par with a few other institutes across the country," said a state health official. The hospital's gynaecology department tends to 300 pregnant women every day, with an annual footfall of around 10,000. "This achievement is due to the hard work of every level of caregivers. Our team is also trained regularly by Swasthya Bhawan in improving service quality," said Pranab Biswas, head of gynaecology department. Delhi govt seeks 10-year age relaxation to fast-track hiring for Ayushman Arogya Mandirs
NEW DELHI: In a bid to address a shortage of healthcare professionals, the Delhi government has proposed a 10-year relaxation in the upper age limit for the recruitment of Medical Officers and Multi-Task Health Workers under the National Health Mission (NHM), officials said. The move is aimed at speeding up appointments at the soon-to-be-launched Ayushman Arogya Mandirs across the city, they added. According to officials, the Health Department has submitted a proposal to the Lieutenant Governor (L-G) seeking approval to increase the maximum age limit for contractual appointments. If cleared, the new age cap for Medical Officers will be raised from 45 to 55 years, while for Multi-Task Health Workers, it will go up from 30 to 40 years. The proposal is currently awaiting a nod from the L-G's office. This newspaper had earlier reported that Arogya Mandirs will hire healthcare professionals on a contractual basis with fixed pay scales from National Health Mission, unlike the Aam Aadmi Party's Mohalla Clinics where doctors were daily wages model were followed. The medicos were compensated on a per-patient basis. A total of 1,139 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs are planned to be set up in Delhi under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Infrastructure Mission in the city. Of these, 33 centres have already started operations, while the rest are scheduled to be launched by March next year. Meanwhile, CM Rekha Gupta is expected to inaugurate 34 more Arogya Mandirs and 8 Jan Aushadhi Kendras on Thursday. With the inauguration of 34 new AAMs, the total number of operational centres in Delhi will rise to 67. Officials said the health department is under pressure to complete the hiring process within the next few months, and the proposed age relaxation could ease some of the constraints in attracting qualified personnel. The current NHM guidelines set the maximum age for medical officers at 45 years, and for Multi-Task Health Workers at 30 years. 'The proposed changes, health department officials believe, will make more experienced candidates eligible for the positions and help bridge the staffing gap quickly,' a senior official commented. Notably, no upper age limit was ever set for doctors appointed to Delhi's Mohalla Clinics, where many retired professionals continue to offer their services.

Andhra Pradesh government launches midwife training drive to reduce C-section deliveries
Vijayawada: In a bid to reduce C-section deliveries and promote natural births at medical institutions across the state, health minister Satya Kumar Yadav has approved a new maternal healthcare scheme. The first-of-its-kind initiative aims to increase the rate of natural deliveries by deploying 1,264 specially trained midwives across 86 govt hospitals with high delivery rates. The programme, funded under the National Health Mission (NHM), includes an intensive 18-month training for each midwife. The training will focus on all stages of childbirth, including expulsion of the baby, placenta, fetal membranes, and physiological stages of labour. Each midwife will also receive a monthly stipend during training. The estimated cost of training per midwife is Rs 2.5 lakh. According to govt health records, 56.12% of all deliveries in Andhra Pradesh during 2024-25 were C-sections. While govt hospitals accounted for 41.4% of these, private hospitals contributed the remaining. Officials cite lack of awareness and skill among existing staff nurses as a key reason for the high C-section rate in govt hospitals. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors Are Ditching Finger Pricks with This Breakthrough Monitor Thelifeh Undo To address this, the new programme includes measures to train nurses and improve support for natural deliveries. Yadav has instructed health officials to expand the programme to primary health centres (PHCs) in rural and tribal regions, where delivery volumes are high. He stressed on the importance of deploying at least one trained midwife at each PHC to ensure safe and effective support for natural births. Speaking to TOI, state maternal health additional director Dr Anil Kumar said training for about 60 midwives has been already completed and they have been deployed at various govt hospitals across the state. When asked about plans to keep a tab on C-section deliveries at private hospitals in the state, he said the govt has been conducting criss-cross C-section audit inspections at private hospitals with 100% C-sections deliveries. A five-member team comprising of the DMHO, anaesthesian, pediatrician, gynaecologist, and project officer visit the hospitals and examine the C-section deliveries case sheets and check whether Robson Classification model was followed or not. "If private hospitals show no improvements in C-section deliveries in the next three months after the audit inspection, they would be removed from Aarogya Sri empanelled hospitals," Anil Kumar added.
