We've lost awareness of how weird this was. If the Monkey Trial had never taken place, and an expert historian were asked in 2025 to name the two greatest American orators of the period, 'Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan' might still be the answer you would get. Nothing of this kind had ever happened before, nor has it happened since: an actual criminal jury trial with honest-to-God mega-celebrities acting as counsel on both sides.

The trial was, we now know, a thoroughly contrived occasion for 'culture war' cooked up by the ACLU and some of its friends in the American liberal establishment. In 2025 we are more than familiar with such things: anybody who has internet access would understand, would say without pausing for a second thought, that William Jennings Bryan was being 'trolled.' But when the trial began it seemed that the trolling effort was bound to fail.

The judge, John T. Raulston, accepted some written evidence on the scientific evidence for evolution, but refused to allow experts to be cross-examined in court, and tried to stick to the actual issue in the case: had defendant Scopes broken the law of Tennessee? With the defence left hanging, Darrow asked if Bryan would be willing to face questioning as an expert on the text and teaching of the Bible. Bryan, who was as eager as Darrow to add some theatrical colour to the proceedings, unwisely agreed.

The result was a confrontation that has become immortal, mostly through the avenue of the oft-adapted play Inherit the Wind. (The Darrow-versus-Bryan parts of the play are quite faithful to the trial transcript. These gentlemen didn't need help creating drama.) Darrow, who is perhaps still the archetypal American unbeliever, asked village-atheist questions about the accuracy and consistency of the Bible. Bryan became flustered, indignant and abusive, and did much more poorly in handling Darrow's questions than any decently educated fundamentalist would now.

When the dust settled, Scopes was found guilty and fined $100. His conviction was appealed to the state Supreme Court, which upheld the Butler Act; however, the amount of Scopes's fine was technically contrary to the state's constitution, and the appeal judge, observing that Scopes had long since moved on from Tennessee, urged against a re-trial.

I have written about the Scopes trial a time or two, and I am a little sad to say that it appears to be losing its hold on the popular imagination. Partly this is because the famous people involved are no longer famous. But the culture war has also moved on from the topic of biological evolution to a surprising degree, hasn't it? When I was a young man, and the year 2000 still lurked in the future, there was a brief vogue among religious folk for varieties of 'scientific creationism' that might somehow locate the hand of God in the story of humanity. In retrospect, 'scientific creationism' seems like a fatal compromise, and little is heard of it in the era of cheap DNA sequencing. You might object to the possibility that you had distant Neanderthal ancestors, but, if you care to, you can pay someone a few hundred bucks to find out the exact quantum of Neanderthal DNA in your cells.

In other words, almost everyone has accepted the premises that the Butler Act was specifically designed to condemn: man did 'descend' from 'lower' beasts, from primates, and if God intended for there to exist a creature in His own image, evolution seems to be how He went about it. Bryan and the Tennessee legislature believed that the Bible was literally true, and that its divine status and meaning would be annihilated by conceding any presence of mere allegory or metaphor or instructive invention.

Even today's evangelical fundamentalists aren't usually that fundamentalist. Indeed, in 1925 Bryan himself proved shaky on the witness stand, conceding that the six-day Creation might not have involved 144 actual hours of clock time. I daresay, even speaking as an atheist, that it seems a touch insulting to the Bible to regard it as a brute factual record or as some sort of unartful consumer-product manual.

Hong, File) The University of California, Los Angeles, reached a $6 million settlement with three Jewish students and a Jewish professor whose suit against the university argued it violated their civil rights by allowing pro-Palestinian protesters in 2024 to block their access to classes and other areas on campus. The settlement comes nearly a year after a preliminary injunction was issued, marking the first time a U.S. judge had ruled against a university over their handling of on-campus demonstrations against Israel's war in Gaza. UCLA had argued that it had no legal responsibility over the issue because protesters, not the university, blocked Jewish students' access to areas. The university also worked with law enforcement to thwart attempts to set up new protest camps. But U.S. District Judge Mark Scarsi disagreed and ordered UCLA to create a plan to protect Jewish students on campus. The University of California, one of the nation's largest public university systems, has since created system-wide campus guidelines on protests. How the university handled dispersing the encampment in the spring drew widespread criticism. One night, counter protesters attacked the pro-Palestinian encampment, throwing traffic cones and firing pepper spray, with fighting that continued for hours, injuring more than a dozen people, before police stepped in. The next day, after hundreds defied orders to leave, more than 200 people were arrested. Trump administration joins lawsuit filed by Jewish students In March, the Trump administration joined the lawsuit filed by the Jewish students and Jewish professor as it opened new investigations into allegations of antisemitism at Columbia University; the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Minnesota; Northwestern University and Portland State University. Last week, Columbia agreed to pay $200 million as part of a settlement to resolve investigations into alleged violations of federal antidiscrimination laws and restore more than $400 million in research grants. The Trump administration plans to use its deal with Columbia as a template for other universities, with financial penalties that are now seen as an expectation for future agreements. Government finds UCLA violated civil rights of Jewish students On Tuesday, the Trump administration announced the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division found UCLA violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 'by acting with deliberate indifference in creating a hostile educational environment for Jewish and Israeli students.' 'UCLA failed to take timely and appropriate action in response to credible claims of harm and hostility on its campus,' said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division. The university has said that it's committed to campus safety and will continue to implement recommendations. The university did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the settlement or the DOJ announcement Tuesday. UCLA agrees to granting students equal access As part of the settlement agreement, UCLA must ensure Jewish students, faculty and staff are not excluded from anything on-campus. The $6.13 million settlement will pay the plaintiffs' damages and legal fees and go toward eight Jewish organizations. Pro-Palestinian protesters also sue university A group of 35 pro-Palestinian students, faculty members, legal observers, journalists and activists also has filed a lawsuit against UCLA, alleging the university failed to protect those who participated in the demonstrations. Some Jewish students have also taken part in protests on campuses around the country against Israel's war in Gaza. During the 2014 protests at UCLA, at least 15 pro-Palestinian protesters were injured and the tepid response by authorities drew criticism from political leaders as well as Muslim students and advocacy groups. He said the data suggests social media played a role in exposing young Canadians to such rhetoric. Please try again The poll found a 'big spike' in antisemitism, with a marked convergence of exposure rates to antisemitism and Islamophobia for all Canadians, Jedwab said. 'If you look back at surveys prior to October 2023, Canadians were far more likely to say they were far more exposed to prejudice directed towards Muslims than they were to other groups, including Jews,' he wrote. 'The fact that exposure is now relatively similar testifies to a big spike in exposure to antisemitism.' (Only about one per cent of Canada's population is Jewish, while 4.9 per cent identified as Muslim, as of 2021.) Increased exposure to intolerant views, 'risks normalizing prejudice,' Jedwab said. It is 'something that badly needs to be addressed.' He pointed to a recent report showing alarming levels of Jew hatred in Ontario public schools as an urgent call to action. 'It needs to be stated very clearly by persons in positions of authority that it is not acceptable to stigmatize individuals wearing a Star of David or a hijab. Regrettably, there is too much equivocation on this and other manifestations of prejudice.' The poll found that a respondent's perception of hearing a discriminatory comment heavily shaped how they viewed media coverage of the Hamas-Israel war. Among those who heard antisemitic comments only, over a third (35.5 per cent) thought mainstream media was more favourable to the Palestinians, while roughly a quarter (25.1 per cent) believed Israel was portrayed better. Conversely, respondents who said they heard only Islamophobic comments thought Israel received better media coverage (35.8 per cent), while over a quarter (27 per cent) saw the Palestinians getting more sympathetic coverage. Rates of exposure to antisemitic and Islamophobic comments decreased significantly with older respondents. Less than a quarter (23 per cent) of Canadians aged 35 to 44 reported hearing an antisemitic remark, and just 14 per cent of those 65 and over said they heard such comments publicly.

Article content I am not a hyphenated citizen. I am not a guest. I am not a perpetual immigrant. I am Canadian. My parents are Canadian. My grandparents — immigrants though they were — became citizens of this country and thought of it as theirs. They never lived as permanent outsiders, and neither do I. Article content What my grandparents experienced was not this. It was immigration governed by expectations, by rules, by culture, by a shared sense that the host nation mattered and that entry was not a right, but a privilege. They didn't arrive demanding accommodation. They arrived prepared to adapt. They weren't told Canada was racist or rotten. They were told to become Canadians. And they did. Article content Now the very values that allowed them to succeed — things like speaking English or French, respecting the law, earning your place and pledging loyalty to Canada above all — are dismissed as relics of some oppressive past. Article content You don't even need to speak one of the country's official languages nowadays — citizenship can be granted without a working knowledge of English or French. The border is treated as a formality, national identity as an embarrassment and Canadian-ness itself as something to be apologized for — unless, of course, it's being used to signal smug superiority over the Americans. Article content Article content And through it all, we, the children and grandchildren of immigrants, are told to keep our mouths shut. We're told we must support the demolition of our national identity, simply because once, long ago, someone in our family got off a boat or a plane. Article content But I live here. I was born here. I was raised here. I pay taxes here. I vote here. I love this country as mine, not as a borrowed space on indefinite loan from history. So no, I don't think like an immigrant. I think like a Canadian. Article content I will not allow my grandparents' sacrifices to be weaponized against the country they chose. I will not allow my name to be invoked in service of policies that degrade what they built. I will not be guilted, lectured or emotionally extorted into being complicit in our national decline.
