Will this be Alex Ovechkin's final season? Washington Capitals captain begins training early
The veteran forward is entering the final year of his five-year deal, and speculation is mounting over whether the 2025–26 season will be his last in the
NHL
.
Alex Ovechkin begins preparation for year 21 after breaking Wayne Gretzky's record
Ovechkin's early return to training comes on the heels of one of the most memorable seasons in NHL history. Despite missing 16 games due to a broken leg, he managed to score 44 goals, the third-most in the league and officially surpassed Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer.
Sharing his thoughts on the milestone, Ovechkin acknowledged the unpredictability of the game and expressed gratitude for reaching such a rare feat.
'To be honest with you, you never thought how many games you're going to play. You never think how many goals you're going to score because you never know what's going to happen on the ice,'
he said.
'I was lucky enough this year to be able to score the goals to break the record.'
Ovechkin is now gearing up for his 21st NHL season, a longevity milestone few players have reached, especially while remaining productive. His work ethic and early commitment to offseason conditioning suggest he's preparing to give everything he has, regardless of what the future holds.
Future beyond 2025–26 still uncertain for Capitals legend
Though the 2025–26 season marks the end of the five-year contract Ovechkin signed in 2021, the veteran has not confirmed whether he will retire after this season. When asked about it at the conclusion of last year, he replied,
'
To be honest with you, I haven't thought about it yet, but we'll see what's going to happen
.'
As one of the most iconic figures in NHL history and the face of the Washington Capitals franchise, Ovechkin's decision will carry major implications for both the team and the league. For now, he remains focused on preparing for what could be another standout campaign.
Alex Ovechkin's early return to training signals his continued commitment as he enters the final year of his current deal with the Washington Capitals. While retirement rumors continue to swirl, the legendary goal scorer appears intent on making the most of what could be his final NHL season.

IND vs ENG 3rd Test: 'They betrayed everyone' - R Ashwin surprised by shift in England's approach
Ben Stokes (L) and Joe Root (R) of England(Photo by) Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has taken a light-hearted but sharp dig at England's batting approach on Day 1 of the third Test at Lord's. The veteran India off-spinner was left surprised, like many fans, as Ben Stokes ' side moved away from their aggressive 'Bazball' style and chose a more cautious route instead. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin jokingly said England had 'betrayed everyone' who expected attacking cricket. Instead of their usual free-flowing strokeplay, England batted at a much slower pace, scoring at around three runs an over. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'It was a good day for England,' Ashwin began, 'but everyone believed they would continue with Bazball. What we saw instead was Prankball. Their run rate dropped, and they looked far more defensive than expected.' Jasprit Bumrah press conference: Hits out at critics, on Lord's Honours Boards, ball controversy Ashwin, who has played several Tests against England, said he couldn't quite make sense of the shift in mindset. He also acknowledged Joe Root 's hundred as the standout performance of the day. 'I've said earlier that Joe Root scoring runs is very important for England. And just when it was needed, he delivered. That knock was a proper lesson in how to play Test cricket. Root is back,' he said. Poll How do you feel about the term 'Prankball' used by Ashwin? It's a funny take. It's a bit harsh. On the field, Root's brilliant 104 helped England reach 387 in their first innings. Jasprit Bumrah led India's bowling with a five-wicket haul. In reply, India ended Day 2 on 145 for 3, with KL Rahul steady at one end and Rishabh Pant playing positively despite a finger injury. Catch Manika Batra's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 3. Cathy Engelbert's All-Star announcement hits wrong number, blindsiding Washington Mystics rookie in bizarre twist of fate
Cathy Engelbert. Image via: Melanie Fidler/NBAE via Getty Images In one of the most unusual All-Star reveals the WNBA has ever seen, Washington Mystics rookie Sonia Citron learned of her selection not from her team or the league, but from a stranger on social media. While Commissioner Cathy Engelbert traditionally calls each selected player personally, a misdial this year created a story no one could've scripted. Citron's All-Star moment arrived via direct message from someone she had never even spoken to before. Cathy Engelbert mistakenly dials the wrong WNBA rookie, turning an All-Star selection moment into a surreal phone call mix-up During an appearance on Between The Lines with WNBA legend Lisa Leslie, Sonia Citron recalled the moment she realized something strange was going on. "Usually Cathy calls you and she lets you know. That was not the case for me… I was checking my phone, maybe an hour before a game," she told Leslie. What she found was a direct message from Seattle Storm forward Gabby Williams — a player Citron had never met. "I saw that Gabby Williams had followed and DMed me, and I was like, 'Oh, this is super random, because I've never met her, never talked to her.' I was like, 'She's not just doing this out of nowhere.'" Inside the message was a screenshot of a voicemail from Commissioner Engelbert. But the voicemail wasn't intended for Williams. Engelbert had dialed the wrong number, and Williams, realizing the mistake, passed the message along. 'In the DM, she was like, 'Hey, Cathy called me thinking that this number was your number. I hope this isn't how you found out, but congrats,'' Citron said. While the situation added an awkward twist to what should've been a celebratory moment, it didn't dampen the honor. Citron was later officially drafted by Caitlin Clark to Team Clark for the All-Star Game, which will be held July 19 in Indianapolis. As Citron gears up for the game and the 3-point contest, Engelbert's misfire has reignited conversation about communication and leadership in the WNBA. With a new collective bargaining agreement on the horizon, players have expressed the importance of direct, respectful engagement with league officials. New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu weighed in during a recent shootaround, noting, 'I think it's important to have real conversations. I've talked to Adam Silver about it a lot when I've seen him… We need to be able to be in the room with Cathy and talking to her and her leadership group about what we want.' IND vs ENG 3rd Test: Shubman Gill once again nears breaching ICC Code of Conduct; avoids it smartly
India's captain Shubman Gill (AP/PTI) Shubman Gill narrowly avoided landing in trouble with the International Cricket Council (ICC) during the third Test at Lord's after a small but noticeable breach of clothing regulations. Just before the start of play, during the national anthems, the Indian captain was spotted wearing a red vest under his white jersey. According to Article 19.44 of the ICC's clothing and equipment code for Test matches, any visible undergarments beneath the shirt must be white. Coloured vests or undershirts are strictly not allowed to be seen. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Fortunately for Gill, he quickly realised the issue. As the teams lined up for the first session, he discreetly buttoned up his shirt to cover the red vest — effectively resolving the breach before play began. The ICC closely monitors such details, and players can face penalties even for seemingly minor infractions, especially when the colour is visible to the naked eye. Inside Shubman Gill's MARATHON BATTING SESSION before Lord's Test vs England | Gambhir x Jaiswal This isn't the first time the young skipper has found himself on the edge of a clothing-related violation. During the first Test at Headingley, Gill was seen wearing black socks, which also do not meet ICC's clothing standards for Test matches. However, he corrected the mistake by switching to white socks the following day, again avoiding any disciplinary action. Gill's awareness and prompt action helped him dodge a possible sanction from the ICC on both occasions. While they may seem like minor oversights, the rules are enforced seriously, especially in the traditional format of the game Catch Manika Batra's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 3. Watch Here!
