Pinoy aeronautical engineer named in Top 10 Young Investors Prize 2025

GMA Network30-06-2025
A Filipino aeronautical engineer has become one of the 10 recipients of the Young Inventors Prize 2025 for his eco-friendly aircraft sealant and adhesive made from pili tree resin.
Mark Kennedy Bantugon, 26, has developed the Pili Seal, an aircraft sealant and adhesive made from the agricultural waste of pili tree resin.
Pili Seal aims to reduce environmental impact by providing a safer alternative to traditional sealants and adhesives, some of which contain toxic petrochemicals.
The two-part sealant and adhesive can withstand fuel exposure, heat, and pressure. It also has the potential to be used in the construction, automotive, marine, and defense industries.
According to the European Patent Office, Pili Seal can repurpose the pili tree resin waste generated in the Philippines.
It noted that agricultural pili tree resin waste in the country, which primarily comes from the perfume and food industries, yields about 155 million kilograms annually.
Awarded last June 18 in Iceland, each of the 10 awardees receives 5,000 euros.
During the 2025 Young Investors Prize ceremony on the same day, Bantungon said he chose the pili tree resin because of its sticky characteristics and fragrance.
Bantungon also said that before getting the final output, he tried 84 formulas.
He also shared that he drew inspiration from his parents, who are farmers and were present during the event.
The Young Inventors Prize recognizes inventors under 30 years old who support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG).
Bantugon was selected from 450 candidates all over the world by an independent jury.
'By transforming agricultural waste into a high-performance sealant, Mark Kennedy Bantugon is directly contributing to UN SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure),' the European Patent Office said.

First batch of Community Mortgage Program sites to be awarded by October

State-run Social Housing Finance Corporation (SHFC) is looking to award the first batch of Community Mortgage Program (CMP) sites by October this year, as the government has revived the program that allows beneficiaries to borrow up to P750,000 for housing assistance. According to the SHFC, eight initial CMP sites have been identified, and are targeted to be awarded by October this year: in Ilocos Norte; Ilocos Sur; Iloilo City; Pasig City; Roxas City; Tanay, Rizal; and Valenzuela. A total of 34 sites have been identified for the national scope of the CMP. 'These projects represent not just houses but hope, dignity, and stability for thousands of Filipino families. This move reflects our strong commitment to address the housing needs of the underserved through direct community empowerment,' SHFC president and chief executive officer Federico Laxa said in a statement. Based on the CMP overview on the SHFC website, the CMP is a people-led housing finance and community development program, which seeks to assist legally organized associations of low-income groups to acquire and develop a tract of land under the concept of community ownership. Under the program, member-beneficiaries can borrow P400,000 for onsite; P480,000 for horizontal housing; up to P750,000 for vertical housing; and P350,000 for farm lot, and P50,000 for farmer support assistance. CMP loans bear 6% interest per year, based on the outstanding balance and payable over a maximum period of 25 years in equal monthly amortizations. According to the SHFC, the revival of the CMP comes with 'key enhancements' to eliminate bottlenecks and accelerate project implementation, such as the provision of an additional credit component dedicated to site upgrading on top of the initial loan for lot acquisition. 'This aims to ensure that CMP communities are no longer considered informal or blighted settlements,' the SHFC said. 'We will be more transformative with our CMP projects to ensure the continuous improvement of the communities we serve,' Laxa said. Laxa said the SHFC will also collaborate with other agencies to ensure that beneficiaries can access a broader range of services, such as the planned partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to provide skills training and capacity-building programs to boost long-term income prospects. A dedicated task force has also been established to fast-track the evaluation and approval of CMP projects. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA Integrated News

Bersamin, 2 Cabinet officials tapped as caretakers during Marcos' US trip

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin and two other Cabinet secretaries will serve as the country's caretakers during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s visit to Washington, D.C. Bersamin said the two officials are Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla and Agrarian Reform Secretary Conrado Estrella III. 'The order of the President is to continue the work while he is away. Anyway, we keep in constant communication with him during all the time that he is away from the country,' Bersamin told reporters. 'Wala naman kailangan na ilagay niyang specific because each of us, including the other cabinet secretaries, we are all aware of what the President has set for us to do, so we will just leave it like that and everybody continues to function 100%,' he added. (There's no need for the President to assign anything specific because each of us, including the other Cabinet secretaries, are already aware of what he expects from us. So we'll just leave it at that, and everyone will continue to function at 100%) Marcos on Sunday departed for the United States for an official visit, which includes a meeting with US President Donald Trump. Among the topics Marcos and Trump will discuss is the steep 20% tariff rate on Filipino goods entering the US, as Manila hopes to strike a mutually acceptable and beneficial tariff deal. Bersamin also said the President could include discussions during his Washington trip in his fourth State of the Nation Address. "We can expect that. If he wants to include that, if there is anything worth reporting, we can expect it," Bersamin said. The President's visit will be from July 20 to 22, 2025. Aside from Trump, Marcos will have a meeting with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on July 21. Several businesses in the US also expressed their intention to meet with the Philippine leader, Department of Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Raquel Solano said. — RF, GMA Integrated News
