Indian women help Miss World contestants wash their feet, video sparks outrage: ‘Colonial hangover'
The Miss World pageant – one of the world's oldest – has seen its fair share of controversies in the past. This time, too, a burgeoning controversy over colonialism has been linked to the beauty pageant. A section of the internet has voiced objection to a video that shows Indian women washing the feet of Miss World contestants ahead of a temple visit.
The Miss World 2025 contest kicked off with a glittering ceremony on May 10 in Hyderabad and will run until the grand finale on May 31, when reigning queen Krystyna Pyszková will pass the crown to a new winner.
Ahead of the Miss World final, the contestants visited two of Telangana's most revered temples—the Ramappa Temple in Mulugu district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the famed Thousand Pillar Temple in Warangal.
The temple visits were part of several activities organised in the run up to the final by the Telangana Tourism Department. Before entering the temples, the beauty queens washed their feet, as is customary. News agency PTI reported: 'Before entering the temple, the contestants participated in a customary foot washing ritual, using elegant plates filled with water.'
However, footage shared online shows local women helping the Miss World contestants wash their feet.
The videos shared on social media show Telangana women – believed to be volunteers – helping the Miss World contestants wash their feet. Some were even seen patting their feet dry with a towel.
The videos have sparked outrage among a section of the internet which slammed the act as 'racist'.
'Such a disgusting activity by the state government, it's an out and out casteist and racist program,' wrote X user Harish.
'The video shows that the contestant are washing their own feet, the women volunteers are assisting them,' another countered, adding: 'There should be a word from the Govt representative & the organisers on this activity.'
One critic called it an example of India's 'colonial hangover.'
However, several social media users also pointed out that most contestants seemed to have washed their feet themselves. Some were assisted by local women.

India to resume visas for Chinese nationals as thaw continues ahead of likely Modi-Xi meet
Chinese citizens will have to complete an online application, schedule an appointment and personally submit their passports at Indian visa centres in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The Indian Embassy in Beijing announced the move on the Chinese social media platform, Sina Weibo, indicating that Chinese citizens can apply for a tourist visa for travel to the South Asian nation from 24 July, 2025. New Delhi: India lifted its nearly 5-year suspension on tourist visas to Chinese nationals Wednesday, amid a continuing thaw in relations between the two countries ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's likely visit to Tianjin for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit at the end of next month. The move comes as both New Delhi and Beijing continue to use confidence-building mechanisms to slowly restore ties following a diplomatic pause. The two countries have had a difficult few years following the clashes in Galwan in the summer of 2020. While India had paused visas for Chinese nationals, China issued about 3 lakh, mainly business-related visas, to Indians, last year. The issuance of visas for its tourists and businessmen was one of the Chinese government's main asks. India had paused travel from China and suspended direct air flights from the Asian country during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pause was never lifted as diplomatic ties cratered, following the military clashes. However, on 21 October, 2024, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced that the two countries had reached an agreement for disengagement at the friction points across the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The agreement set the stage for Modi to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on the margins of the BRICS Summit in the Russian city of Kazan a few days later. India pushed for the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra as a means to build confidence in the ties with Beijing. Earlier this summer, the yatra was resumed with the first batch of pilgrims reaching the site last month. With India lifting the suspension of tourist visas for Chinese nationals, the first of Beijing's requests for restoration of ties has been implemented. The other ask by Beijing has been the resumption of direct flights. Technical teams are currently working out an agreement, which would see the resumption of direct flights between the two countries. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun welcomed the step in comments made to reporters, according to Reuters. 'China is ready to maintain communication and consultation with India and constantly improve the level of personal exchanges between the two countries,' Guo is reported to have said. Earlier this month, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with his counterpart, Wang Yi, in Beijing during his two-day visit to China. Jaishankar pushed for discussions on 'de-escalation' on the borders after noting that friction in the areas has been 'resolved'. In the last month, Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh travelled to China for meetings under the SCO mechanism. Jaishankar attended the SCO foreign ministers' meeting during his 2-day visit to China. At the height of tensions, India moved 68,000 troops to eastern Ladakh along with military equipment. However, following the Modi-Xi meeting in October 2024, a number of bilateral mechanisms have been engaged at different levels, leading to a reduction in diplomatic tensions between the two neighbours. China is set to host the SCO Heads of State Summit at the end of August in the city of Tianjin, with Modi's attendance expected. After 5 years, India to issue visas to Chinese tourists
India will start issuing tourist visas to Chinese nationals after a gap of five years, the Indian Embassy in Beijing announced on Wednesday. The announcement, that was called 'positive' by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, marks another step in normalising India-China ties ruptured by the military standoff at the Line of Actual Control and Galwan clashes in 2020. According to an official notice posted online and on Chinese social media, the visas can be applied for online beginning from Thursday and obtained after an appointment at the Indian Embassy in Beijing and consulates in Shanghai and Guangzhou. Amidst the bonhomie, Beijing rejected concerns in Delhi and Dhaka about China's latest dam project on the Yarlung Sangpo or Brahmaputra River in Tibet and said it had communicated with both the governments. Responding to a question about the visa issuance on Wednesday, a Chinese MFA spokesperson said that Beijing had taken note of the 'positive move'. 'Easing cross-border travel is widely beneficial. China will maintain communication and consultation with India to further facilitate travel between the two countries,' said spokesperson Guo Jiakun in Beijing. After the Covid pandemic and then violence between the two militaries after China amassed troops at the LAC, both countries had cancelled all flights and most visa services between them. China restored visa applications for Indian students in 2022 and for business and tourism purposes subsequently. It issued an estimated 85,000 visas between January and June 2025. India had issued visas in business and student categories, but not for tourism until now. According to the Ministry of Tourism figures in 2019, before the lockdown, more than 3,00,000 Chinese tourists had visited India and about 8,69,000 Indian tourists had gone to China. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Kazan last October and agreed to restore ties, a series of high-level meetings discussed the next steps, including the start of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra. Most recently, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar travelled to China on July 14-16, and met with his counterpart Wang Yi, and also called on Chinese President Xi Jinping and Vice-President Hang Zheng, before attending the SCO Council for Foreign Ministers. In an interview to The Hindu, Chinese Ambassaor Xu Feihong said that resuming the Kailash pilgrimage was 'an important initiative taken by China to improve relations between the two countries', indicating that it was India's turn to take the next positive step. Both sides are also working on resuming direct flights between the two countries soon, understood to be announced before PM Modi's visit to China for the SCO summit, which is expected on August 31-September 1, officials said. When asked by reporters about the hydropower project being constructed on the Yarlung Sangpo, Mr. Guo said that it was 'fully within China's sovereignty'. 'China is engaged in cooperation with downstream countries on sharing hydrological data, flood prevention and disaster reduction,' he said, adding that Beijing has had the 'necessary communication' with India and Bangladesh. Construction for the massive 60,000 MW Medog Hydropower station, set to be the world's largest, began last week, and was flagged off by Chinese Premier Li Qiang. In a response in Parliament, the government had said that India had 'registered its concerns' with China over the ecological and disaster risks of the project in December 2024, while the Bangladesh's Ministry of Water Resources had also requested Beijing's response on its concerns in March this year.
