‘We ate one egg between five': Malaysian Haj pilgrims detail nightmare journey to Mecca after alleged scam
Those were reportedly the words used by a prominent religious figure to pacify a group of 49 Malaysian Haj pilgrims, many of them elderly, as what was promised to be a smooth pilgrimage instead became a harrowing and dangerous ordeal in Saudi Arabia.
The group, who returned to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) today, allege they were deceived by a local Haj agent claiming to offer legitimate packages. Instead, they say they were forced to endure extreme hardship, including trekking through deserts and climbing rocky hills to enter Mecca without valid documentation.
Speaking to reporters at KLIA Terminal 1, a 63-year-old trader from Batu Pahat, Johor, said the ordeal began after their initial six-day stay in Madinah.
'Things were still manageable in Madinah. But once we were moved to Mecca, everything changed. We had to walk through deserts and climb hills. It was dangerous,' he said.
The pilgrims claim they were smuggled into the Holy City via unofficial and hazardous routes to avoid detection by Saudi authorities, as none of them possessed valid Haj visas, a violation of Saudi law that could carry serious legal and safety implications.
According to earlier reports, the group had departed for Saudi Arabia on May 9. They later claimed they were held in cramped, dark rooms and asked to pay an additional RM9,000 to retrieve their belongings despite already having paid RM30,000 each for the Haj package.
One of the returnees, a 64-year-old lecturer and wife of the Johor trader, described how food was scarce and the group was left to ration minimal meals.
'We shared one fried egg and two small fish between five people. Two pieces of chicken were divided among seven. When we asked why, the organiser told us to accept our fate and place our trust in God,' she said.
Forty-eight of the 49 pilgrims returned to Malaysia via Turkish Airlines flight TK60. One individual is believed to have continued their travels to Switzerland.
Police said three reports have been lodged by the victims' families and investigations are underway to identify those behind the suspected scam targeting pilgrims. — Bernama

KLIA Aerotrain suffers brief disruption after reopening this week, caused by tunnel flooding from heavy rain
KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 — The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Aerotrain service was temporarily suspended this morning after water accumulated in its tunnel following heavy rainfall. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) said the incident occurred at around 11am when one of the tunnel's drainage pumps experienced a technical fault during severe weather. 'The tunnel's drainage system includes pumps designed to handle water ingress during heavy rain. However, one of the drainage pumps failed to activate automatically, which led to water building up in the tunnel,' MAHB said in a statement here. It said train operations were halted as a safety precaution, and technical teams were deployed to manually clear the water from the tracks. Service resumed at 12.15pm after engineers confirmed that the route was safe for operations. MAHB said shuttle bus services to the satellite terminal continued uninterrupted throughout the suspension period, ensuring that passenger movements were not affected. The airport operator added that work is underway to rectify the faulty pump to prevent a recurrence during future weather events. 'The Aerotrain is currently back in regular service. Our technical teams continue to monitor the system closely to ensure any operational adjustments are promptly addressed. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we fine-tune this new system,' the statement added. This incident followed a separate one on Wednesday, when a passenger allegedly held a train door open for too long, causing them to become stuck. The issue was rectified on the spot and it did not cause any disruption to the service, an MAHB spokesman told Malay Mail in response. The Aerotrain service resumed operations on Tuesday following more than two years of upgrading works valued at RM456 million. It serves as a vital link between KLIA's main terminal and the satellite terminal. An iconic feature of KLIA since its opening in 1998, the Aerotrain now features Alstom Innovia APM 300R trainsets. Each three-car unit can accommodate up to 270 passengers and travel at speeds of up to 56 kilometres per hour, reducing travel time between the main terminal and the satellite terminal to under three minutes.

(X pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd has denied claims that KLIA's new Aerotrain service has broken down, less than a week after its launch. Responding to social media posts circulating online, MAHB said the service was only temporarily suspended at 11am today as heavy rainfall had caused water to accumulate in the tunnel. It added that the transportation of passengers to the airport's satellite terminal was uninterrupted as they were able to use the shuttle bus service. 'The tunnel's drainage system includes pumps designed to handle water ingress during severe weather conditions. However, one of the drainage pumps experienced a technical fault during today's heavy rainfall, preventing the automatic removal of accumulated water. 'As a safety precaution, train operations were suspended until the water was manually cleared and the tracks were confirmed safe for use. Service resumed at 12.15pm once full clearance was obtained from the technical and safety teams,' it said in a statement. MAHB added that its technical teams will continue to monitor the system closely to ensure that operational adjustments, if any, are made immediately. 'We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we fine-tune this new system,' it said. The new and improved Aerotrain service commenced operations on July 1, involving three trains with a maximum capacity of 270 passengers each.
