Watch: Giant baseball with 6,750 signatures breaks world record
The 8-foot diameter replica baseball started its journey June 24 at Victory Field, home of the Indianapolis Indians, and visited 15 ballparks before arriving at its final stop at the MLB Flagship Store in New York on Tuesday.
A Guinness World Records adjudicator examined the ball and determined there were 6,750 verified signatures on its surface, earning the title for the most signatures on a single item of sports memorabilia.
The previous record of 2,146 signatures was set by the Cambridge United Football Club last year, when it gathered fans to sign a giant inflatable jersey.

Anderson/UPI | License Photo Aug. 4 (UPI) -- A federal jury in Oklahoma on Monday convicted a former NFL player on a half dozen animal abuse charges for breeding and selling fighting dogs. LeShon Eugene Johnson, 54, of Broken Arrow, Okla., was found guilty on six counts of violating the federal Animal Welfare Act by a jury following a trial in which they heard evidence that he bred and trafficked so-called champion and grand champion fighting dogs and their offspring. "This criminal profited off of the misery of innocent animals and he will face severe consequences for his vile crimes," Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement. The grand jury indictment was unsealed in March, accusing him of possessing 190 bull-type dogs for use in animal fighting operations. Federal prosecutors accused him of operating Mal Kant Kennels, which had two locations, one in Broken Arrow and the other in Haskell, which is also in Oklahoma. They said he selectively bred champion and grand champion fighting dogs, defined as those that have won three and five fights, respectively. He marketed and sold stud rights and puppies from winning dogs to other dog fighters who wanted the Mal Kan Kennels "bloodline," according to prosecutors who said his operation contributed to the growth of dog fighting across the country. The 190 dogs in his possession were seized by law enforcement in October and are now in U.S. Marshal custody following the verdict on Monday. This is the largest seizure from a single person in a federal dog fighting case, the Justice Department said. Johnson faces up to a maximum of five years' imprisonment and a fine of up to $25,000 for each of the six counts. The conviction is also at least the second dog fighting case brought against Johnson, who pleaded guilty to state animal fighting charges in 2004 for running Krazside Kennels. Johnson played five seasons in the NFL for the Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals and the New York Giants in the 1990s, for a total of 62 games played. There have been several dog fighting cases. In February, a Florida man was sentenced to seven years for a dog fighting conspiracy and being a felon in possession of a gun. In December, a former Defense Department official received 18 months for participating in a multi-state dog fighting conspiracy, and a Virginia man became the final of seven defendants in July of 2023 to be sentenced to 46 months for dog fighting charges.

Florida Panthers' Matthew Tkachuk named 'NHL 26' cover athlete
Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk will be on the cover of NHL 26, EA Sports announced Monday. A full reveal for the video game will premier Wednesday. "He's loud," EA Sports wrote on social media. "He's relentless. He's a problem. Now he's the face of the game." Tkachuk, 27, joined the Panthers through a 2022 trade from the Calgary Flames. The nine-year veteran made the Stanley Cup Final in each of his three seasons with the franchise, including their back-to-back title-winning campaigns in 2023-24 and 2024-25. Tkachuk tied Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Reinhart for the Panthers' team lead in postseason points, with 23 over 23 games. He scored eight goals and chipped in 15 assists during the Panthers' 2024-25 playoff run. NHL 26 is expected to be released in September. The NHL 26 preview will air Wednesday on YouTube.

Atlanta Braves place Austin Riley on injured list

The Braves also recalled infielders Nacho Alvarez Jr. and Jonathan Ornelas and optioned outfielder Jarred Kelenic to the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers. Riley sustained the abdominal strain during the Braves' 4-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday in Bristol, Tenn. He also landed on the injured list on July 12 due to an abdominal strain. Riley hit .260 with 16 home runs and 54 RBIs through his first 102 games this season. The two-time All-Star hit .256 with 19 home runs and 56 RBIs over 110 appearances last season. He hit more than 30 home runs each season from 2021 through 2023. He hit a career-best .303 in 2021. The Braves (47-63) sit in fourth place in the National League East, 15.5 games behind the first-place Philadelphia Phillies (63-48). They will host the Milwaukee Brewers (67-44) at 7:15 p.m. EDT Monday in Atlanta.
