Punjab: Keep eye on obscene social media content, minister tells officials
Punjab social security, women and child development minister Baljit Kaur on Sunday expressed concern over the increasing trend of vulgar and obscene content being circulated on social media platforms. Hailing the orders issued by the Punjab State Commission for Protection of Child Rights to the ADGP (cyber crime) for strict action against those posting such content, the minister directed all district social security, women and child development officers to keep a strict watch on the circulation of such objectionable content at their level. She instructed that any complaint or information received regarding such content must be immediately shared with the police and the Child Rights Commission. Additionally, awareness campaigns must be organised at the local level to sensitise parents, teachers and youth about the responsible use of social media, she mentioned.
Kaur stated that any elements adversely affecting the mental health of children would not be tolerated under any circumstances. The culprits will face the strictest legal action to deter others from posting obscene content online.
The minister also instructed the police to intensify surveillance of such content on social media and take immediate action against individuals involved in creating or uploading it, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, IT Act 2000, and POCSO Act 2012.
She appealed to parents, teachers, social organisations and others to promptly report any such content or individuals involved in circulating it to the police or the Child Rights Commission without delay. 'Creating a safe, healthy, and positive digital environment for children is a shared responsibility of all of us,' she emphasised.

VARANASI: An accused in a case registered under sections 115(2), 351(3), 352, 191(3), 109 BNS was injured in an encounter with police in the Rasra police station area in Ballia district on Thursday. He claimed he could retrieve the weapon. Believing this, the SHO, along with his team and investigator, followed the accused's directions and reached the specified location around 8 PM. Before a culvert on this road, he asked them to stop the vehicle. As per his directions, the police parked the vehicle by the roadside. He got out, and the police illuminated the area with their flashlights. After some time, he moved towards the culvert, with the police following. Suddenly, he distanced himself from the officers, went under the culvert, and retrieved a pistol. He shouted that he was trapped and threatened the police, firing at the SHO Rasra, who narrowly escaped. When he attempted to fire again, the police shot him in the leg. He was immediately taken to CHC Rasra for treatment. The police said that one .32 bore pistol, two live cartridges, and one spent cartridge were recovered from him.

Money demands led to murder: 22-year-old woman killed in UP hotel room; man arrested after encounter
VARANASI: A youth was arrested on Thursday for allegedly murdering a 22-year-old woman, whose body was discovered in a hotel room in Roopapur, under the jurisdiction of Mirzamurad police station, on Wednesday. According to reports, Mirzamurad police were informed about the body of an unidentified young woman discovered in the hotel room on 2 July. Officers promptly reached the scene to begin investigation and identify the victim. During the process, Chandrashekhar Bind, a resident of Mehdiganj village, identified the woman as his daughter, Alka Bind. Several items were recovered from the scene, including a knife, mobile cover, sandals, hair clip, blood samples, laptop bag, diary, and other belongings. The evidence was sealed, and a case was registered under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Using CCTV footage, hotel register records, technical surveillance, and the deceased's mobile call data, police identified the suspect as Sahab Bind, a resident of Baraini village in Kachhwa Bazaar, Mirzapur district. He was tracked to his sister's house in Bhadohi and arrested on Thursday by the Mirzamurad police. During questioning, Sahab confessed to the murder. He said he worked in a garment unit in Surat, Gujarat, and had met the victim at a wedding in Mehdiganj in 2024. A relationship developed between them, and they reportedly met twice earlier at the same hotel during Navratri and Holi festivals. The accused claimed that the woman had been demanding money from him repeatedly, which prompted him to plan the murder. On 2 July, he travelled from Surat to Varanasi, booked a room at the hotel, and called the woman there. He then killed her by slitting her throat with a knife and fled with her mobile phone and admit card to hide her identity. Following his arrest, police took him to the crime scene, the escape route, and for recovery of evidence. During the site visit, the accused suddenly snatched a policeman's pistol and tried to escape while firing at the police team. The police responded in self-defence and shot him in the leg. He was admitted to hospital for treatment. Police recovered the murder weapon, the victim's phone, ID card, academic documents, and the accused's mobile. Efforts are ongoing to trace the shop from where the knife was purchased and to recover the suspect's discarded phone.

‘Peculiar Situation': HC Grants Interim Bail To Muslim Youth Who Impregnated Minor Hindu Partner

The HC considered the interest of the child and the girl as the families are now supportive of their union The Allahabad High Court (HC) has granted interim bail to a 20-year-old Muslim man accused of impregnating a Hindu minor girl allegedly after a consensual relationship. The girl, who is five months pregnant, had reportedly eloped with the accused, prompting a criminal case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the POCSO Act filed by her mother. The bench of Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan, on July 1, noted that while the First Information Report (FIR) pegged the girl's age at 15, a medical examination suggested she was around 17 — still below the legal marriageable age of 18. The man, too, has not attained the legal marriageable age of 21, being 20 years and 8 months old. Despite this, the court observed that the girl is carrying the applicant's child and both families are now supportive of their union. In this 'peculiar fact situation", the judge said, the interest of the unborn child and the girl must be considered. The applicant was therefore granted interim bail for two months so that he may support and take care of the girl during her pregnancy. The couple's interfaith background added legal complexity. Since the man is Hindu and the girl is Muslim, the court clarified that any lawful marriage between them would have to be conducted under the Special Marriage Act. However, being minors in the eyes of marriage law, they are currently ineligible to marry legally. Both the girl and her mother are to appear in court on September 3, 2025, to inform the judge whether the man is fulfilling his responsibility and whether the girl is satisfied with his conduct.
