Achuthanandan remained true to his principles: Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru, Jul 22 (PTI) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday condoled the death of veteran CPI(M) leader V S Achuthanandan and said that he was a steadfast voice for justice and remained true to his principles.
Achuthanandan, the former chief minister of Kerala, died at 3.20 pm on Monday while undergoing treatment in the critical care unit of Pattom SUT Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.
He had been receiving treatment since June 23, following a cardiac arrest.
'Shri V S Achuthanandan (1923-2025) was a steadfast voice for justice and the common good throughout his long public life. He remained true to his principles-in struggles on the ground and in positions of power, including as Chief Minister of Kerala (2006-2011)," Siddaramaiah said in a post on 'X'.
'His passing is a great loss. Condolences to his family, the people of Kerala, and all who drew strength from his life. Salutes to a life well lived," he added.
A founding member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Achuthanandan was a lifelong champion of workers' rights, land reforms, and social justice.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his ministers on Wednesday lashed out at the BJP and Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant over the latter's remark about the Mahadayi project. Notably, Goa CM Sawant told the state legislative assembly that Union Minister for Environment and Forests Bhupendra Yadav has assured that the Central government will not okay the Mahadayi project. Sawant also told the legislative assembly on Tuesday that the Goa government would file a contempt petition in the Supreme Court against the Karnataka government for carrying out activities aimed at diverting Mahadayi river water. The two states are locked in a decades-old dispute over the sharing of Mahadayi river water. Now, CM Siddaramaiah said that the state government will fight it legally and politically. "Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his ministers on Wednesday lashed out at the BJP and Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. The Goa CM's arrogant remark on the Mahadayi project is an insult to the people of Karnataka. Why hasn't the Union Govt officially communicated any concerns? Is this how federalism works under BJP? Backdoor sabotage, silence, and betrayal?" said Siddaramaiah. The Karnataka CM asked whether Kannadigas are being punished for not surrendering to the BJP. "Mahadayi is not for luxury or waste, it is for the drinking water needs of North Karnataka. For decades, our people have waited for justice. But BJP's and Janata Dal (S) Karnataka leaders have no spine to speak up. Their silence today will be remembered tomorrow," he said. The Karnataka Chief Minister said that despite the 2018 tribunal verdict allocating 13.42 TMC of water to the state, the Central government in connivance with Goa's BJP government, is blocking the implementation of the rightful project. "This project will quench the thirst of over 40 lakh people in Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Bagalkot and nearby regions. It is a lifeline, not a bargaining chip. We will fight legally, politically, and morally until Karnataka gets its rightful share," said the CM. Earlier on Wednesday, Karnataka Minister H K Patil termed the Goa CM's statement as shocking. "The official statement made by Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in the Legislative Assembly—that Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav has informed him the Centre will, under no circumstances, approve the Mahadayi project—has come as a shock to Karnataka," he said. The Mahadayi river originates in the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka and flows through Goa and Maharashtra before emptying into the Arabian Sea at Panaji.

Farmers body KMM opposes Punjabs land-pooling policy
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Chandigarh, Jul 23 (PTI) Farmers' body Kisan Mazdoor Morcha on Wednesday opposed the Punjab government's land-pooling policy, alleging that the Bhagwant Mann dispensation wanted to 'plunder" farmers' fertile land at the behest of corporates under the garb of this scheme. Rejecting the policy in a meeting held here, KMM said farmers will hand over memorandums at district headquarters on July 28, seeking its withdrawal. KMM coordinator Sarwan Singh Pandher said it will also hold a rally 'Zameen Bachao Pind Bachao Punjab Bachao' against the land-pooling policy on August 20 in Jalandhar. Speaking to reporters here, Pandher said that on August 11, a motorcycle march will be taken out to protest against the policy. Pandher said farmers do not want to part with their land and alleged that the state government wanted to 'plunder" farmers' fertile land on the pretext of setting up urban development at the behest of real estate companies. He further said that many village panchayats in the state are passing resolutions against the policy. Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), which is a conglomerate of more than 30 farmer bodies, has already opposed the land-pooling policy and demanded its withdrawal. The AAP government has been facing flak from the opposition parties, which dubbed the policy a 'looting" scheme to 'rob" farmers of their land. The Punjab Cabinet last month gave its nod to the land-pooling policy, and had then asserted that not even a single yard will be forcibly acquired from land owners. Under the land pooling policy, a land owner will be given a 1,000 square yards of residential plot and a 200 square yards of commercial plot in fully developed land in lieu of one acre of land, the state government had said earlier. Publications, TV channels increased in past decade: Union minister Murugan
Agency: New Delhi, Jul 23 (PTI) The number of publications registered with the Press Registrar General of India has increased from 1.05 lakh in 2014-15 to 1.55 lakh in 2024-25, Union Minister L Murugan said on Wednesday. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Murugan said India has a vibrant press and media ecosystem, which has witnessed growth in recent years. He said the number of private satellite TV Channels have also increased from 821 in 2014-15 to 908 in 2024-25. 'As of today, 92 private channels and 50 Doordarshan Channels are available on DD Free Dish. Both private and DD channels operate in various regional languages, ensuring wider audience reach across the country," Murugan said. In reply to a separate question, Murugan said the government has undertaken measures for the modernisation and expansion of Akashvani and Doordarshan Kendras (DDK) across all the states. The Kendras are being upgraded under the Central Sector Scheme, Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development (BIND). This includes major upgrades throughout the country, including Bihar, to strengthen public broadcasting, he said. 'The scheme has been approved with a total outlay of Rs 2,539.61 crore for the period 2021-26," the minister said.
