A grieving family made a touching request at the funeral of a man who was found dead after going missing on a stag do in Portugal.
Loved ones turned out for an emotional service yesterday to mark the life of Greg Monks, from Cambuslang, near Glasgow, who vanished just hours after arriving with friends at the party resort of Albufeira in the Algarve. The 38-year-old had been missing for a week before Portuguese authorities discovered his body at the bottom of a ravine on June 4. Police believe Greg became lost while trying to find his way back to his hotel, and tragically fell to his death.
After flying over for the week-long search, his mum, cousin and girlfriend Nicole, were forced to return home as they waited for his body to be flown back, reports the Daily Record. Yesterday, family and friends gathered at Daldowie Crematorium's West Chapel near Glasgow to say their goodbyes.
The service was also live-streamed online for those unable to attend in person. Instead of bringing flowers, mourners were asked by the family to donate to children's charity Cash for Kids.
A number of attendees spoke after the service, and Sharon Cooke said: "A truly beautiful service, you did Greg proud. All the love in the world to you all."
Kelly Ann added: "The service was absolutely beautiful. His friends and family did him very proud. Rest in peace now Greg."
A balloon release took place on Monday at Fullarton Park in Glasgow, where attendees brought a blue balloon with a personal message to Greg. Greg's sister, Jillian Monks, said losing her brother had been "torture" for the family – but said they were grateful for some sense of closure.
She said: "It has been the toughest time of our lives. We still can't believe what has happened. But we're glad we now have some sense of closure. I don't know if any of us could have coped with even another day searching for my brother.
"We couldn't eat, we couldn't sleep. It was absolute torture. To know Greg has been found is a slight relief. We can now bring him home and give him the send-off he deserves."
Greg died after becoming separated from his friends - and Jillian has now urged groups of friends heading abroad to look after one another and stay together.
She said: "In places like Albufeira, everyone needs to stick together and look after each other. His pals are absolutely devastated at what happened.
'Before everyone left the hotel that night, Greg made sure they all had a business card and a map from the hotel to help them find their way home.'

The Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk was hit as apocalyptic footage showed a former oil refinery up in flames. The city was attacked simultaneously by Putin's forces with cruise missiles, Kinzhal - which translates as "Our Dagger" - hypersonic missiles, and Iranian-designed Shahed attack drones. It was the most powerful onslaught against the city since the start of the war. The attacks were across the country and amounted to one of the heaviest bombardments of the three year conflict. A missile strike on Zaporizhzhia left an industrial facility on fire. 'A production facility of one of the enterprises was damaged,' said Ivan Fedorov, head of the regional military administration. Estonia's defence minister Hanno Pevkur said today that his country would "naturally" be prepared to host some of the jets - sparking a furious reaction from Vladimir Putin's spokesman, who was asked if that would be perceived as a threat to Moscow.

A rescue helicopter was seen in the sky above the loch assisting the "extensive" search on Saturday. Police said emergency services, including the Coastguard, were in attendance. A statement said: "Enquiries are ongoing and we would ask people to please avoid the area if possible." Last month, in a separate incident, we reported that a body had been recovered from Loch Ard following searches for a swimmer. Emergency services raced to the scene at around 9pm on Saturday May 10. Extensive searches were carried out by the dive and marine unit along with the Mountain Rescue Team and air support unit. Sadly, the body of a 42-year-old man was pulled from the water early on the afternoon of the following day. There were not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. Officers said a report would be sent to the the procurator fiscal.

'Contracts for pals' crisis deepens at Scottish council as two senior figures step aside
South Ayrshire Council faces urgent calls for an inquiry over alleged misconduct by local chiefs following a Sunday Mail investigation. Two senior figures at a local authority have stepped aside amid a widening police probe into contracts for 'pals' allegations. South Ayrshire Council's conservative leader Martin Dowey resigned in April after the Sunday Mail published a recording in which he appeared to offer to help a company with lucrative work. We can reveal police are now assessing a further recording of the local authority's CEO Mike Newall, who also stepped aside after we received it. A businessman who claims he is owed more than £400,000 has also now written to the council demanding an inquiry into the scandal is launched immediately. David O'Neil's letter states: 'I am writing to formally raise serious allegations involving misconduct, abuse of position and potential fraud.' In the latest recording to emerge CEO Newall appears to tells a company boss he wants to hand him key work. Newall is heard stating he wants to 'weave a way through all the bureaucracy and procurement stuff so we can make you the preferred bidder so as you get the work'. He added: 'What I have to deal with is a head of legal services who is very risk averse. 'She says, 'Oh you can't do this and you can't do that.' It's can't, can't, can't.' Newall added: 'I want this to happen.' The audio was recorded at the council's HQ around a year ago and related to a project to redevelop a shopping centre in Ayr town centre. Newall, 63, who earns £135,000 a year, took a leave of absence from his role as CEO citing family reasons days after the Sunday Mail asked for the council to comment on the recording. Newall can also be heard telling the businessman: 'I'm being candid with you here…we have to be careful what we're saying. The leaked tape comes two months after the council's former Conservative leader, Martin Dowey, stood down amid another recording row revealed by the Sunday Mail. Dowey has been reported to police but has insisted no wrongdoing took place and vowed to clear his name. Police confirmed they had 'received additional correspondence which is being assessed.' In a tape, Dowey calls officers at his local authority 'f****** useless' and boasts: 'All the top ones I can sack.' And he appears to tell the businessman he can help him win work including a deal to demolish Ayr's Station Hotel, which was devastated by fire in 2023. In the recording of a meeting at the council's offices that year Dowey, a former police officer, states: 'You will be told the quotes are coming out. You put in your price, we will give you a guestimate of what is happening. 'If you are in the last three you will get the quote. You will get it. That's easy, that's not a problem. The problem arises if you are not in the final three, I can't do anything about that. It's up to us getting a proper price from you.' In the wake of our story deputy leader of South Ayrshire Council Bob Pollock was removed in May following an angry meeting. Provost Iain Campbell resigned after admitting he was 'totally disgusted' by the behaviour in the chamber. 'An investigation into the awarding of council contracts is already under way and some of these allegations form part of that investigation.'
