Durban City ends coaching 'hunt' by appointing Gavin

The South African17 hours ago
Durban City have officially announced the appointment of Gavin Hunt as their new head coach for the upcoming season.
Hunt returns to topflight football after months on the sidelines following his sacking by SuperSport United.
At the time, Matsatsantsa were struggling for results and needed a change of fortunes to save their PSL status.
And they appointed Andre Arendse as their interim coach, and the former Bafana Bafana Bafana goalkeeper saved them from relegation.
Now, as Durban City were in the hunt for a coach following the departure of Simo Dladla, Gavin raised his hand for the job.
The two parties discussed terms for weeks, but they finally found each other as the announcement came on Wednesday.
In a statement released on the day, Durban City said Hunt brings with him a winning legacy to the team.
Hunt is a well-travelled coach having been with no fewer than seven different teams in his coaching career in the PSL era.
He enjoyed huge success with SuperSport United during his first stint as well as the now defunct Bidvest Wits.
Hunt also had unsuccessful spells with both Kaizer Chiefs and Chippa United before returning to Matsatsantsa for a second stint. Former SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt is now at Durban City. Image: Gallo Images

Gavin Hunt named Durban City coach: His PSL track record

Newly promoted Durban City have announced Gavin Hunt as their new coach for the upcoming 2025/26 Betway Premiership season. Image: Vodacom Soccer Newly promoted Durban City have announced Gavin Hunt as their new coach for the upcoming 2025/26 Betway Premiership season. Hunt's quest for 1 000 games ended in the most South African way possible last season – with the power grid failing at half-time in his milestone game, although he coached a few more games after that to surpass 1 000. He was then sacked by a struggling SuperSport United side who barely managed to avoid relegation. Matsatsantsa were sold in recent days. Now, as he joins Durban City, Hunt reaches yet another milestone – this is his 10th coaching stint (nine clubs). Durban City won last season's Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) to gain promotion to the top-flight. They were later joined by fellow MFC side Orbit College who won the promotion-relegation playoffs, sealing the demotion of Cape Town City FC. Here's a brief reminder of each of Gavin Hunt's previous coaching stints. BREAKING: Top European court rules in Caster Semenya's favour

A top European court on Thursday said a Swiss court did not give South African runner Caster Semenya a fair trial over whether she should lower her testosterone levels to compete as a woman. Semenya, who is classed as having 'differences in sexual development', has been unable to compete in her favoured 800m category since 2018, after she refused to take drugs to reduce her testosterone levels following World Athletics introducing new rules on women competitors. Orlando Pirates saying goodbye to popular striker?

Is Zakhele Lepasa surely leaving Orlando Pirates? The 28-year-old forward did not feature in a single Betway Premiership match last season. While the Soweto-born player suffered an ankle injury, Lepasa resumed full training in March but never came near the Orlando Pirates 11 nor the substitute's bench until the season ended. According to reports, Lepasa did not see eye to eye with coach Riveiro, while the likes of Tshegofatso Mabasa, Evidence Makgopa, and emerging youngster Boitumelo Radiopane were doing the business on the green grass. Jersey number spotted: New Orlando Pirates defender Zakhele Lepasa warms up for Orlando Pirates at the Athlone Stadium. Image: IOL Despite Riveiro's departure, Lepasa has not travelled with Orlando Pirates to the preseason training camp in Spain. Nevertheless, an insider somehow believes Lepasa could remain at the club. According to this report, the issue is a stalling agreement over a new contract. 'His contract was supposed to run out at the end of June, and talks have been ongoing for some time,' an insider told Soccer Laduma . Orlando Pirates announce big decision on star winger 'It's believed that there was a contract proposal from the club with the player and his representatives having a counter proposal and now Lepasa is waiting on Orlando Pirates. Everything now remains a decision to be made by the club and that's what he is waiting for,' a source added. A telling element is the club's decision to exclude Lepasa from the current pre-season training camp in Spain. 'He did not travel to Spain as the talks have stalled, and he is waiting on the team, but it's believed that the new head coach is happy with what he has seen from him at training,' the source told the outlet. 'If all goes well he could join the team in Spain at a later stage. It is in the hands of the club,' the insider concluded. Meanwhile, Lepasa has scored 15 goals and made two assists in 64 games for the Sea Robbers.
