Bosses at Glasgow council live entertainment firm awarded nearly £120,000 in bonuses

Daily Record2 days ago
Bosses at a live entertainment firm owned by Glasgow council pocketed nearly £120,000 in bonuses at a time of cuts to services.
Executives at Scottish Event Campus Ltd were awarded the top up payments as council tax for locals was jacked up by 7.5%.
SEC Ltd is majority owned by the city council and runs money-spinning venues like the Armadillo and the Hydro.
Performers coming to the Hydro later this year include Lewis Capaldi, Katy Perry and Alanis Morissette.
Despite the SNP -run council facing huge budget pressures, the latest accounts show bonuses were again paid to senior SEC figures.
Managing Director Deborah McWilliams received a £32,979 bonus as part of a £216,799 remuneration package.
Colin Hartley, Director of Operations, earned £147,330 in salary which was boosted by a £27,993 bonus. He received £194,258 all in.
Director of Exhibition Sales Daniel Thurlow's £193,511 salary and allowances deal included a £27,256 top up. Kathleen Warden, Director of Conference Sales, was awarded a £29,466 bonus which took her full package to £195,721.
Green MSP Maggie Chapman said: 'It is abysmal that people already receiving a yearly salary that's more than four times higher than the average salary, are then given massive bonuses by councils on top of that. It is even more abysmal that this is happening while public services are crying out for a much-needed cash boost, but being told the purse strings must be tightened.'
'In Glasgow, every secondary school is at risk of losing their librarians next year due to council budget cuts to try and save £100k. Yet, there are top earners in the city, if not the country, receiving £117k in bonuses between them.
'We are in a housing emergency, a health and social care crisis, and residents in Glasgow and across Scotland are suffering under the costs of living.
"I don't believe this is an appropriate message to be sending to the city - that SEC bosses can get a bonus of this scale from the local council, while public services are crumbling.'
An SEC spokesperson said: "The SEC is an integral part of Glasgow's economy and culture. The campus welcomed 1.8 million visitors in 2024 generating £468 million in economic impact for Glasgow and the wider Scottish economy.
'As a self-funding private limited company, we recognise and reward performance in line with industry standards. This year, our directors received a performance-related bonus as part of their overall remuneration package, as determined by the Board's Remuneration Committee and guided by external benchmarking."
The cash-strapped council has cut services in recent years and effectively remortgaged signature buildings to pay for equal pay claims.
It comes as a former chief executive at a firm owned by Edinburgh council was handed a £22,343 bonus in his last year.
The top up for ex EICC boss Marshall Dallas came as councillors landed local residents with an 8% council tax rise.
The EICC, ultimately owned by the Labour -run council, operates at arm's length as a conference venue.
Dallas announced last year he would be leaving the organisation after a decade in charge.

UN expert backs Regan's Bill to criminalise the buying of sex in Scotland

A UN expert has backed Ash Regan's Bill to criminalise the buying of sex in Scotland while decriminalising people selling sexual services. The Alba MSP's 'Unbuyable Bill' won support from the United Nations special rapporteur on violence against women and girls, Reem Alsalem, on Friday. Ms Alsalem said the proposals put forward by Regan were 'in line' with recommendations she made in a report to the UN Human Rights Council last year. In her opinion, the UN expert said the Bill provides an 'effective framework for ending the exploitation and violence that women are subjected to in prostitution, by discouraging the demand for buying sexual acts and offering exit strategies for the victims'. On Friday, Regan welcomed the support and urged her colleagues in the Scottish Parliament to 'take note' of Ms Alsalem's support, with the UN expert describing the Bill as 'an effective framework for ending the exploitation and violence that women are subjected to in prostitution'. Regan launched the Prostitution (Offences and Support) (Scotland) Bill in Scottish Parliament last month to criminalise the buying of sex in Scotland while decriminalising the people selling sexual services. The MSP hopes the Bill, which would also quash historic convictions for prostitution and create a statutory right to support for those leaving the trade, will be passed before parliament breaks for next year's Holyrood election. However the Bill has faced criticism from some sectors of the sex-work community, who say it could be 'disastrous' for their safety. The support comes as Scotland's community safety minister, Siobhian Brown, raised concerns on Monday about the potential cost of quashing convictions as part of the legislation. Under Regan's proposals, those convicted of buying sex in Scotland could be fined up to £10,000 if the case was prosecuted in Scotland's Sheriff Courts – with these courts also able to impose jail sentences of up to six months. Holyrood's Criminal Justice Committee is currently seeking views on the Prostitution (Offences and Support) (Scotland) Bill. The call for views closes on September 5, 2025. New Scottish shopping centre owner puts 50 stores on market

It comes after the Yorkshire-based developer acquired the Regent Shopping Centre in South Lanarkshire. The agent said: 'Occupying a dominant position in Hamilton town centre, the centre's positioning and scale means that it makes up a significant proportion of the town centre core. 'The six-acre gateway site has been identified as key to South Lanarkshire Council's masterplan vision for the regeneration of Hamilton town centre to create a vibrant, accessible, and resilient town centre with a focus on living, leisure, healthcare and workspace as well as incorporating a significantly reduced retail element.' Tahir Ali, of Evergold, said: 'Our plans for the Centre are aligned closely with the council's aim to have a diverse and sustainable mixed use town centre that not only serves its immediate catchment but also becomes a vibrant hub for the wider region.' Calvin Molinari, of Shepherd Chartered Surveyors, said: 'This instruction follows our recent merger with Whyte & Barrie Chartered Surveyors to form a practice unrivalled in its delivery network of surveying services throughout Lanarkshire. 'Our extensive expertise and experience within the Lanarkshire market make us best placed to deliver effective asset management and property management roles alongside actively marketing the available retail units at this gateway site to a range of prospective tenants.' The 50 retail units, varying in size from 300 square feet to 50,000 square feet, are available on flexible lease terms. Scottish salmon exporters prepare major drive for Indian market Salmon farmers are preparing to tap into the Indian market in a move expected to deliver a massive boost for the Scottish economy. Producers are exploring new opportunities following agreement on a free trade deal that will slash tariffs on exports to the sub-continent. Scottish salmon currently faces a 33 per cent tariff which severely limits trade, but this is set to be removed next year when the deal struck by the UK Government takes effect. This paves the way for exports worth tens of millions of pounds every year, creating inward investment and well-paid jobs in Scotland. As talks get underway, Indian High Commissioner Vikram K. Doraiswami this week travelled to Scotland to learn more about the scale and quality of Scottish farm-raised salmon during a visit to Rosyth, Fife, which is home to the UK's largest processing plant.
