ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Marshlands in southern Iraq are drying up due to worsening drought and declining groundwater levels, a local official warned, as authorities scramble to mitigate the crisis that has already displaced over 10,000 families.
'Most of the marshlands in the north of our province have dried up, and we are trying to revive some of them through the Tigris River, but there is no solution for the other dried marshlands in our province,' said Zeinab al-Asadi, head of the provincial agriculture committee in Dhi Qar.
The Tigris River, one of Iraq's two major waterways, flows from Turkey through northern and central Iraq and is a vital source of water for agriculture, drinking, and the marshlands.
'The groundwater level in our province has decreased significantly, and groundwater continues to drop further. This is a major problem facing the residents,' Asadi added.
According to Dhi Qar's meteorology directorate, less than 50 millimeters of rain fell in the province last winter - a decline from over 80 millimeters recorded in previous years.
'This year, there was a drought in our province. The water level in the marshlands has decreased to nearly half a meter, when previously none of them were less than a meter [deep],' Asadi said.
'Certainly, in this season, that remaining half meter will also decrease, because much of it will evaporate,' she said.
The prolonged drought and desertification have already displaced thousands of people. The local office of the Ministry of Migration and Displacement reported that by October, more than 10,000 families had been forced to move out of areas surrounding the marshlands.
'Part of the citizens were displaced due to the drying of marshlands and desertification,' Asadi said.
To address the crisis, Asadi said they are coordinating with the Ministry of Water Resources to dig new artesian wells across the province.
Dhi Qar is home to much of Iraq's historic marshlands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site considered one of the most fertile and ecologically significant areas in the country. The province's population is over 2 million, according to Iraq's census done in November.
Iraq's water crisis has been exacerbated by five consecutive years of drought, soaring temperatures, and the construction of upstream dams in neighboring Turkey and Iran. These dams have sharply reduced water inflows into Iraq, leaving the country with less than 40 percent of its entitled share from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers - Iraq's primary water sources.

They attacked our nuclear centers – in itself a matter for independent legal handling in the international courts – but did not succeed in carrying out any significant action. He wrote: "With all its commotion and pretensions, with all its statements, the Zionist regime was on the verge of collapse, crushed under the blows of the Islamic Republic." The image showed a giant army boot stomping on the Israeli flag as Iranian missiles rained down on Israeli cities.[2] June 16, 2025. The next day, June 27, Khamenei posted another AI-generated graphic on his X account demonstrating what he described as Israel being crushed. It depicted the Jewish menorah, the symbol of the State of Israel, with its seven arms set on fire by Iranian missiles and crumbling into ash amid the ruins of the city, as Israel's population thronged like vermin to the shore to try to board boats, since Israel's airspace was closed. It stated: "The Zionist regime, with all its commotion and all its pretensions, was trampled and almost completely # crushed under the blows of the Islamic Republic. The thought that such blows could be dealt to this regime [Israel] by the Islamic Republic had never occurred to them – but it happened." It concluded in Hebrew, "Israel is crushed."[3] June 27, 2025. Khamenei On X: "[Imam] Ali Returns To Khaybar With [His Double-Bladed Sword] Zulfiqar – Allah Akbar" Earlier, on June 18, Khamenei posted on X a well-known Muslim battle cry for massacring Jews. In 627 CE, Ali (aka Haidar), the first Shi'a imam and the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, participated in the campaign against the Jewish tribe, the Banu Qurayza in the Arabian Peninsula. The Jews were massacred in the Battle of Khaybar, where they lived. To this day, the antisemitic call "Khaybar, Khaybar, oh Jews, the army of Muhammad will return" is chanted as a threat to Jewish communities.[4] Zulfiqar is Ali's double-bladed sword, and it is considered a symbol of Islam. The move marks a significant step toward restoring stability within Iraq's top judicial body following a period of internal turmoil. Hussein took his constitutional oath before President Rashid, who reaffirmed 'full support for the success of the Federal Supreme Court in its constitutional tasks,' according to a statement from the Iraqi presidency. Rashid underscored the court's pivotal role in safeguarding Iraq's democratic process, ensuring the separation of powers, and maintaining judicial independence. In his remarks, Hussein pledged his 'commitment to the provisions of the [Iraqi] constitution and law,' emphasizing his determination to protect the court's independence and shield it from outside interference. Hussein previously served as deputy head of the Federal Court of Cassation and was a reserve member of the Federal Supreme Court. Rashid had on Monday formally appointed Hussein as the new head of the Federal Supreme Court following the retirement of former Chief Justice Jassim al-Umairi. Umairi's resignation - officially attributed to "health reasons" - followed a wave of resignations from within the Federal Supreme Court. In mid-June, six out of nine permanent members and three reserve members of the court stepped down, reportedly in direct protest against Umairi's leadership. Speaking to Rudaw on condition of anonymity, one of the resigned judges stated in mid-June, 'The behavior of the court president [Umairi] is unacceptable to us, and we are tired of dealing with his working manners.' However, following the appointment of Hussein, the resigned judges rescinded their retirement requests. According to INA, they stated that 'the reasons that led them to request retirement have been addressed.' The judges congratulated Hussein on his appointment and highlighted the importance of establishing 'sound judicial work mechanisms' and adhering strictly to constitutional jurisdiction. They also stressed the need to 'preserve the independence and neutrality of the judiciary and refrain from any behavior or practice that would compromise it.' Since early June, public servants in the Region have been urging the court to issue an injunction that would compel the federal government to resume salary disbursements, which have been suspended since late May. The ministry claimed the freeze was due to the KRG exceeding its allocated 12.67 percent share of the 2025 federal budget.
