UFC Vegas 108 Main Event: Tatsuro Taira vs. Hyun Sung Park
Tatsuro Taira (16-1) rose through the UFC flyweight ranks fairly quickly. He joined the UFC in May 2022 with a record of 10-0, and after winning the Shooto flyweight title.
Taira opened his UFC career with a unanimous decision win over Carlos Candelario in May 2022. He followed that with back-to-back submission wins in contests where he earned 'Performance of the Night' bonuses, defeating C.J. Vergara and Jesús Santos Aguilar.
Wins over Edgar Chairez and Carlos Hernandez in 2023 followed.
In June, Taira got the first true test of his UFC career when he faced Alex Perez in a main event on a UFC Fight Night card at the Apex. At the time, Taira was the No. 13 ranked fighter in the UFC's flyweight division, and Perez, who had fought Deiveson Figueiredo for the UFC 125-pound title in 2020, was ranked No. 5.
The fight ended when Taira took the back of his opponent in the center of the Octagon and forced him to the mat, putting enormous pressure on Perez's knee and causing an injury that brought the fight to a halt in the second stanza. From all appearances, and judging from his comments after the victory, the move that finished the contest was a designed technique.
That win put Taira at No. 5 in the UFC rankings, earning him a shot at former UFC flyweight title challenger Brandon Royval, who entered the October 2024 contest as the No. 1 ranked in the UFC's 125-pound division.
Royval and Taira put on a 'Fight of the Night' bonus-winning scrap, but the more experienced Royval took home the split-decision win, handing Taira the first loss of his professional career.
The 25-year-old Taira is currently the No. 6 ranked UFC flyweight.
Hyun Sung Park (10-0) won Road to UFC in early 2023 with a knockout of Seung Guk Choi. He followed that with a knockout of Shannon Ross in late 2023. Park did not compete in 2024 having had fights against Andre Lima and Nyamjargal Tumendemberel cancelled. He returned to the Octagon in March, scoring a first-round submission win over Carlos Hernandez at UFC Vegas 106.
I wrote of the 29-year-old at the time, 'HyunSung Park looked excellent at UFC Vegas 106, moving to 3-0 in the UFC's flyweight division. Park used effective striking to hurt Carlos Hernandez against the fence. That striking made Hernandez move to the clinch, but Park showed his overall MMA ability in scoring a takedown, which led to a back take and a rear naked choke sub at 2:26 of Round 1. The 29-year-old Park looks ready for a test in his next outing as he has picked up three finishes in three UFC outings.'
He gets that test in a big way and on short notice on Saturday night.
Park has only gone the distance once in his MMA career.

The good news heading into this fight is that Park is not coming into UFC Vegas 108 fully unprepared. He was booked opposite Steve Erceg for next week's UFC Vegas 109 card, so he will at least face Taira with most of a fight camp behind him. However, that fight was scheduled for three rounds, while this contest is a five-round affair.
Taira is a good striker, he is better on the mat. However, he is aware how fights are scored, so he'll engage in striking before moving to his grappling. Park, on the other hand looks to grapple first.
Taira is the more well-rounded fighter in this contest and that will allow him to carry the day. The pick is for Taira to win via stoppage. I see him scoring a knockdown against Park, but I'm unsure if the finish will be more strikes or if Taira follows things to the ground to get the sub. Considering Taira's grappling skills, go with the submission.

Fans and city leaders hope WNBA approves sale to move the Sun to Boston
Big news broke Saturday when reports said the minority owner of the Celtics reached a deal to buy the Connecticut Sun and move them to Boston. 'I think it's crazy I think Boston should have been one of the first cities to get one,' Joseph Willingham said. 'It's insane.' Basketball fans have been waiting years for this and are pumped to hear it could finally be happening soon. 'Any women's team coming to the city is really exciting I definitely support them,' Allen Martin said. Boston City Councilor Brian Worrell is pushing for people to call on the WNBA to add a team to Boston. He's hoping and expecting this deal to go through. 'We heard from many, many fans here in Boston that want the 'W' here in the city,' Worrell said. 'We have the best fan base in the country so I wouldn't see why the WNBA would not approve this.' The sale is pending approval of the league and its Board of Governors. The franchise wouldn't play in Boston until the 2027 season at the earliest. 'I hope the league hears us loud and clear; we have a record deal,' Worrell said. 'Let's get this deal done, and hopefully the sun will rise in Boston.' This is a developing story. MLB Speedway Classic between Braves, Reds delayed for 2 1/2 hours, then ultimately suspended until Sunday
The Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds were ready to start their engines Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee. Then Mother Nature waved the red flag not once but twice before play was ultimately suspended. The MLB Speedway Classic began with a 2 1/2 hour rain delay, followed by less than a full inning of baseball, followed by another delay that resulted in a suspension of play until Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Cincinnati will take a 1-0 lead into the next day. The Reds scored off an Austin Hays single to left, their third hit of the frame. First pitch finally arrived at 9:40 p.m. ET. Because of the lengthy delay, Braves starting pitcher Spencer Strider was scratched from the lineup. Strider, who grew up in Tennessee, went through warmups prior to the delay. Left-handed reliever Austin Cox, who had previously started only three games in his brief MLB career, got the nod for the Braves instead. They were planning to lean on their bullpen Saturday night. The Reds, on the other hand, didn't scratch their starter. They still rolled with Chase Burns, a 22-year-old who grew up in Tennessee as well and played college baseball for the Tennessee Volunteers. Burns produced a 1-2-3 inning to start the game. Leading up to the original 7:15 p.m. ET start time, pregame festivities included performances from Pitbull and Tim McGraw, U.S. Navy Musician First Class Kathryn Dobyns singing the national anthem, NASCAR pit crews helping introduce the starting lineups by servicing Braves- and Reds-themed stock cars and a flyover by four U.S. Navy F/A-18 Super Hornets from Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach. But the rain started coming down. It was pouring when Braves icon Chipper Jones and Reds legend Johnny Bench participated in the ceremonial first pitches. Jones, an eight-time All-Star and one-time World Series champion with the Braves, threw to NASCAR driver Chase Elliott. Fellow NASCAR driver Kyle Busch — a two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion — walked out to Bench, a 14-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion with the Reds, and traded spots, allowing the 77-year-old Bench to man his old position as catcher. As the rain continued to hit the converted diamond in the heart of the race track, the tarp came out. Nevertheless, a good number of fans originally expected to break MLB's all-time regular-season, single-game attendance record Saturday stayed put. Ken Rosenthal and Tom Verducci collected interviews for Fox Sports during the delay, showcasing how players and coaches for both teams still shared that enthusiasm. The grounds crew started removing the tarp around 8:50 p.m. ET. After the field was drained, the game finally started. But it wasn't long before the rain picked up again and the tarp returned. "We'll be back tomorrow, 1 o'clock resume," said Michael Hill, MLB senior vice president of on-field operations. "We are optimistic for a better weather forecast tomorrow."

Rams QB Matthew Stafford sees back specialist again as injury timetable remains murky
Matthew Stafford is still waiting to get started at Los Angeles Rams training camp, and his timetable to do so remains as hazy as ever. The Rams starting quarterback visited back specialist Dr. Steven Watkins again on Saturday, head coach Sean McVay told reporters via the Los Angeles Times. He confirmed the 37-year-old Stafford remains week-to-week and will not participate in a joint practice with the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Stafford's availability for the next joint practice with the Los Angeles Chargers the following week reportedly remains undetermined. From the Times: 'What I don't want to do is set a timeline,' McVay said. 'I know he's making good progress. He saw Dr. Watkins again. ... Everything is in good shape.' Stafford has been held out of training camp after encountering back soreness during the offseason. In Stafford's absence, Jimmy Garoppolo has taken first-team reps in his place while former fourth-round pick Stetson Bennett has worked with the second team. The Rams are scheduled to open their season on Sept. 7 against the Houston Texans. There were talks about Stafford exiting Los Angeles over the offseason, but he ended up agreeing to a contract restructure to remain on the team. He's entering his fifth season with the Rams, who won a Super Bowl in his first season but have failed to advance past the divisional round since.
