New Entry & Exit Routes Introduced at Grand Mosque

The measures aim to ease congestion as worshippers and Umrah pilgrims reach record numbers during the final days of Ramadan.
The General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques has implemented a new series of entry and exit routes at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, designed to ease congestion and facilitate smoother crowd movement during the final ten days of Ramadan.
With a record influx of worshippers and Umrah pilgrims expected, the authority has designated specific gates for primary access. These include the King Abdulaziz Gate (Gate 1), King Fahd Gate (Gate 79), and King Abdullah Gate (Gate 100), each identifiable by their accompanying minarets to guide incoming worshippers.
Pilgrims heading to the Mataf area — the central open-air space surrounding the Kaaba where Tawaf (circumambulation) is performed — are now directed to use the Shubaika Bridge, Ajyad Bridge, and Al Arqam Bridge. The route adjustments aim to reduce crowding in interior corridors and ensure steady, organised movement within the mosque.
Exit routes from the Al Masa'a area — the corridor between Safa and Marwah — have also been reorganised. New exit points from both the ground and first floors include Al Safa Gate (Gate 13), the Prophet Mohammed Gate, Al Marwah Gate, Al Marwah Bridge, and the Al Marwah Wheelchair Bridge. These improvements are intended to reduce bottlenecks in high-traffic areas and enhance the overall experience for worshippers during the peak of the holy month.

GCC Citizens Can Perform Umrah Any Time via Nusuk App

GCC citizens can now perform Umrah at any time using simplified procedures, with permits issued through the Nusuk app and entry allowed through any Saudi port. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has announced that citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are now permitted to perform Umrah at any time of the year. As part of this new arrangement, Umrah permits must be obtained through the official Nusuk mobile application, which serves as the central platform for managing pilgrimage-related services. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to simplify procedures and enhance accessibility for GCC pilgrims. In addition to citizens, residents of GCC countries holding any valid visa type may also perform Umrah under the updated guidelines. Those intending to visit Al-Rawdah Al-Sharif in the Prophet's Mosque are required to schedule an appointment through the Nusuk app as well.

Saudi to Allocate 2.5 Million Airline Seats for Umrah by End of 2025

Routes from Europe, including Paris, Lyon and London, are part of a wider strategy to improve access to Madinah and Jeddah. Saudi Arabia has announced plans to allocate a total of 2.5 million airline seats for Umrah pilgrims by the end of 2025, with over 700,000 seats already utilised during the first quarter of the year. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance air connectivity to the Kingdom's key pilgrimage cities, including Madinah and Jeddah, and to streamline travel for visitors from across the globe. The expansion was unveiled during the Umrah and Ziyarah Forum, held in Madinah from April 14th to the 16th, which brought together 150 exhibitors representing over 100 countries. The event focused on infrastructure, travel technologies, and Madinah's historical significance. So far in 2025, 12 airlines have joined the Kingdom's air connectivity programme, introducing 20 new international routes and adding 1.5 million seats to the network. Participating carriers include ITA Airways, British Airways, Wizz Air, and Eurowings. Several of the new connections focus on Europe. Germany's Stuttgart has been added to the growing list of cities with direct flights to Jeddah, alongside Berlin and Cologne. Transavia, the France-based carrier, will soon operate flights from Paris and Lyon. In the United Kingdom, daily flights from London's Gatwick Airport to Madinah are scheduled to begin in August, contributing 180,000 seats to the Umrah travel system. The expansion reflects Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts to facilitate religious tourism and improve access to holy sites as part of Vision 2030, which seeks to increase the number of annual Umrah visitors to 30 million.

New Umrah Visa Rules Require Verified Hotel Bookings for 2025 Season

Pilgrims must secure approved accommodation in Makkah and Madinah before applying for a visa via Nusuk. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has issued new visa regulations for the 1446 AH (2025) Umrah season, effective from the 14th of Dhu al-Hijjah. Enforced through the official Nusuk platform, the updated rules are designed to streamline the application process, reduce fraud, and ensure that pilgrims have secured licensed accommodation before arrival. Under the new system, Umrah visas will only be granted if applicants have confirmed hotel bookings in both Makkah and Madinah that match their travel dates. These accommodations must be licensed by the Tourism Authority and Civil Defense and must be electronically approved by the hotels via Nusuk. The bookings must be fully integrated into the travel package at the time of visa application. Individual visa requests without verified accommodation are now prohibited. Applications linked to incomplete, unapproved, or unofficial hotel reservations—including those made through unlicensed intermediaries—will be automatically rejected. The reforms are intended to increase transparency and hold travel agencies accountable. Pilgrims must now work exclusively with licensed operators capable of handling all travel and lodging documentation through Nusuk. Agencies found in violation of the new requirements may face legal consequences.
