LIV Golf Virginia: Bryson DeChambeau, Martin Kaymer leading after Round 1

Fox Sports07-06-2025
GAINESVILLE, Va. — After a 107-minute weather delay, the star players took advantage of a soft golf course during the first round of LIV Golf Virginia.
Bryson DeChambeau, who debuted his new set of custom LA Golf irons this week, was chief among them. The Crushers GC captain immediately chipped his third shot on the par-5 14th in for eagle, vaulting him up the leaderboard. But he wasn't done yet. DeChambeau made birdies on holes 15 and 16, with the latter coming in the form of another chip-in from the deep greenside rough. The surge at the end of the round gave him a share of the first-round lead at 5 under.

Martin Kaymer, who hasn't held a first-round lead since LIV Houston last year, made birdies on 16, 17 and 18 to tie the lead before ending his day with a par on the tough par-4 first hole.
The late-round birdie barrage after the delay was not limited to DeChambeau and Kaymer. After finishing strong, Jon Rahm, Anirban Lahiri, Phil Mickelson, Graeme McDowell, Joaquin Niemann and Marc Leishman make up the group that are tied for second place at 4-under par.

On the team side of the competition, Bubba Watson's RangeGoats GC lead by two at 9 under, followed by the Crushers and 4Aces who share second place at 7 under.

John Smoltz: Bristol Motor Speedway rain debacle hurts Reds much more than Braves

Cincinnati Reds outfielder Austin Hays spoke to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal shortly after Hays drove in the first (and only pre-game suspension) run of the 2025 MLB Speedway Classic at Tennessee's Bristol Motor Speedway against the Atlanta Braves. "(The field) got wet really fast," Hays said during the broadcast. "I was kinda shocked when I got up there. The box is soaked already. So obviously they made the decision to dry it up just enough. Hopefully this rain'll stop so we can keep this game going. … The game is why we're here. So we need to get it in." "I can feel for these guys right now," analyst and Hall of Famer John Smoltz said during the broadcast. "These guys are gonna be extra tired after this night is over. … It's frustrating (for Chase Burns). Can't control it. And you're just hoping you can stay in the game as long as possible. … Terry (Francona) is not gonna be really, really happy at all. And he's gonna just talk about how he's gonna lose his young man as a starter now. It's a tough scenario. This is a tough break. Atlanta's in a totally different situation than the Cincinnati Reds as far as they're not gonna make the playoffs. Every game's important to them, but not as important as the game is for Cincinnati. And they're chasing some pretty good teams in front of them." "Normally the game probably wouldn't have started (because it was raining so hard)," Fox play-by-play announcer Joe Davis said during the first inning. Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez eviscerate reeling Yankees: ‘Can't make this up'

Access the Yankees beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Greg Joyce about the inside buzz on the Yankees. Try it free It sounds like two former Yankees greats are not at all satisfied about the team's current state. During the FOX Sports pregame show ahead of MLB's Speedway Classic game between the Braves and Reds that was suspended due to rain on Saturday, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez bluntly criticized their former team. When asked about the Yankees' back-to-back losses against the Marlins on Friday and Saturday, Rodriguez wasted no time calling out the pitching performances. 'You can't make this up,' Rodriguez said. 'I mean, look, you can bring in nine relievers, it's not going to make a difference. I don't care if you bring back their '98 bullpen with Mariano [Rivera], Mike Stanton, and Jeff Nelson, if your pitchers are going 3⅓, 4⅓, it's not going to work.' 4 Alex Rodriuez and Derek Jeter made the comments during the FOX Sports pregame show ahead of MLB's Speedway Classic game that was suspended due to rain and will be played on Sunday afternoon. FOX Sports The 14-time All-Star added that — even following the Yankees' trade deadline acquisitions — the team needs to 'restructure' their roster. 'Here is my biggest concern,' Rodriguez said. 'You bring in seven guys and you're still miles away from winning a world title. … You've got to restructure this roster. I like a lot of the players individually but together it just doesn't work.' 'I'm not sure where you go from here,' he concluded. Jeter echoed Rodriguez's sentiment about the Yankees' pitching, but also pointed out the amount of mistakes the team has had in recent games. 'They make way too many mistakes,' Jeter said. 'And you can't get away with making that number of mistakes against great teams. It just doesn't happen. They had base running mistakes today — you saw the guy getting thrown out at home plate. You can't continue to do it. You have to clean it up.' 4 Jazz Chisholm Jr., walks back to the dugout after striking out in the seventh inning of the Yankees' 2-0 road loss to the Marlins on Aug. 2, 2025. AP 4 Austin Wells gets thrown out in a rundown in the ninth inning after mistakenly thinking there were three outs, but the Yankees still manager to squeak out a walk-off win over the Rays in the 10th on July 30, 2025. Robert Sabo / New York Post Additionally, Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. had a base running blunder during Saturday's loss, getting doubled off at first base following a caught pop fly to Miami's second baseman. Jeter then said that the solution for the Yankees was simple — they just have to play better. 'There are no excuses you have to play better,' Jeter added. 'If you don't play better you are not going to go very far.' 4 Aaron Boone talks with Meredith Marakovits, Michael Kay and other members of the media before the Yankees' road loss to the Marlins. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Later on in the segment, Rodriguez chimed in and said that there is no accountability for the Yankees players this season. 'Where's the accountability,' Rodriguez said. 'If any one of us made a mistake, we would be sitting out butt right on the bench. I see mistake after mistake and there's no consequences.' This comes after a disappointing July for the Yankees which has seen the team fall to third place in the AL East with a 60-51 record, putting them 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Blue Jays. The Yankees look to avoid being swept by the Marlins on Sunday at 1:40 p.m.

The MLB Just Had a Classic NASCAR Experience, Speedway Classic Rained Out Until Sunday

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." The MLB got more of the NASCAR experience than it bargained for when heavy rain in Bristol, Tennessee culminated in a late start of the Speedway Classic Saturday, and finally a complete rainout with the game set to resume at 1:00 PM EST on Sunday. The Reds lead the Braves 1-0. In 2024, more than half of the weekends that NASCAR raced were affected by rain, starting with the Daytona 500 being rained out until Monday. Fox Sports' Bob Pockrass pointed out in a post on X that this rain delay comes in a NASCAR season that has defied odds, as there have been zero races in a NASCAR national series postponed to the next date nearly two-thirds of the way into the season. There were more than 85,000 tickets sold for the game, breaking the league record of 84,587 set on September 12, 1954, when Cleveland Stadium hosted the New York Yankees, as reported by NASCAR earlier this week. Hopefully, fans will make the trip back to Bristol on Sunday, following more than three hours of sitting in the rain while waiting to watch baseball. The MLB on Fox booth filled the three hours of rain delay with NASCAR-related hijinks. Players were driven around Bristol Motor Speedway in the back of Chevrolet Silverados while Cincinnati Reds mascot "Mr. Red" was driven around in a Corvette. Two NASCAR Cup Champions, Chase Elliott and Kyle Busch, flew into the game after finishing practice and qualifying at Iowa Speedway to sit with the booth, but sadly left before the little bit of baseball that was played began. Ahead of the race, former NASCAR team owner Pitbull performed along with country music star Tim McGraw. The starting lineup was announced for each team by NASCAR pit crews performing pit stops on cars with Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds branded liveries, with each player's number displayed on pit road signs. The broadcast brought back the Bullpen Cart, allowing Atlanta Braves mascot Blooper to drive 13 laps around the track in a big baseball-helmet-shaped cart before reeling him in. The game will resume on Sunday and will now be in direct competition with the NASCAR Cup Series race at Iowa Speedway, starting 30 minutes before the race is set to go green.
