India's expanding defence outreach in Southeast Asia
President of the Philippines Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. will arrive in New Delhi on Monday for a five-day State Visit to India. This will be his first visit to the country since assuming office. He will be accompanied by First Lady Louise Araneta Marcos and a high-level delegation comprising Cabinet Ministers, other dignitaries, senior officials, and business representatives.President Marcos is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. Discussions are expected to focus on defence, maritime security, and trade cooperation. The President has shown interest in acquiring additional defence equipment from India.In April, India delivered the second batch of BrahMos missiles to the Philippines, part of a $375 million agreement signed in 2022 for three BrahMos missile batteries. Philippine Air Force Chief Romeo Brawner said the country is exploring further purchases of Indian defence systems due to their "quality and affordability." Two more sets of the Indo-Russian BrahMos missile are expected to arrive over the next few years.The Philippines continues to face maritime disputes with China in the South China Sea, referred to domestically as the West Philippine Sea. In response, it is strengthening its defence partnerships with India and Japan to promote stability in the region.Bilateral trade between India and the Philippines has surpassed $3 billion. Both nations are seeking to enhance their trade relationship, including efforts to finalise a deal with the United States, which currently imposes tariffs of 25% on Indian goods and 19% on Philippine products.In addition to the Philippines, two other ASEAN countries are reportedly in talks with India regarding the BrahMos missile. Indonesia is negotiating a potential $450 million deal, while Vietnam is considering a $625 million agreement. In 2022, India also supplied Vietnam with 12 high-speed guard boats under a $100 million line of credit, reflecting expanding defence cooperation.(With inputs from TOI)

IT layoffs cloud recovery hopes as consumption firms brace for slowdown
India's consumption-driven recovery may face fresh headwinds as rising job cuts in the information technology (IT) sector trigger concerns over discretionary spending, reported TOI. With Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) recently confirming over 12,000 layoffs and industry body Nasscom indicating more job losses ahead, consumer-facing companies are preparing for a possible slowdown in demand, particularly for apparel, fashion, electronics, and other non-essentials. The tech sector, a key employer of young professionals, plays a significant role in driving household expenditure. A downturn in this segment could have a spillover effect on wider consumption trends, experts some sectors such as packaged goods and jewellery may be more resilient, others are already signalling caution. 'Sustained consumption growth will depend on economic stability and job security,' Joy Alukkas, CMD at Joyalukkas Group, told The Times of India. However, he added that the jewellery segment may see limited impact due to the cultural and investment value Indians associate with Bhatt, technology sector leader at EY India, noted that IT hiring remains weak. 'Even at a slower rate, the industry added around 1.2 lakh jobs in FY25, but the outlook for FY26 is subdued,' he said. Uneven recovery and cautious sentiment Though lower inflation, interest rate reductions, and recent tax reforms have created a base for consumption revival, company results suggest the recovery is still in early stages. Colgate-Palmolive, for instance, flagged 'tough' operating conditions in its Q1 FY26 earnings call, underlining the pressure on rural and urban demand alike, as per the TOI report. In the fashion and lifestyle segment, consumer caution is evident. Akhil Jain, CEO and MD of Madame, said that while easing inflation and tax breaks offered some support, full-price retail demand remains irregular. 'Job uncertainty in sectors like IT does impact consumption, particularly in categories like fashion,' Jain care players are also monitoring sentiment closely. Sunil Agarwal, chairman of RSH Global, which owns Joy Personal Care, observed early signs of cautious spending. 'The IT layoff trend has created some unease in consumer sentiment,' he said. Agarwal added that the upcoming festive season will be the real test of how demand shapes up in the wake of employment-related employment concerns mounting in a sector that fuels significant urban spending, companies across discretionary categories remain watchful as they head into the crucial second half of the fiscal year. Trump's comments on India and its economy 'belittling, unacceptable': Anand Sharma
Congress leader and former commerce minister Anand Sharma on Monday asserted that US President Donald Trump's comments on India and its economy are "belittling and unacceptable", as he urged the government not to succumb to the American leader's "bullying tactics" to sign a "suboptimal" trade deal. In a statement, Sharma said India must uphold its sovereignty and supreme national interests and Parliament as well as leaders of all political parties must be taken in confidence on any understanding reached with the US. "President Trump has triggered an upheaval and caused unprecedented disruption in the world order by his utterances and actions. His comments on India and its economy are belittling and unacceptable," the Congress leader said. His remarks come days after Trump announced the imposition of 25 per cent tariff and penalties on India and called India and Russia "dead economies". Echoing Trump's criticism of the Indian economy, Rahul Gandhi had last week said everybody except Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman know that the country's economy is "dead". In his statement, Sharma said India has withstood pressures and threats in the past and emerged stronger. "President Trump is mistaken that India does not have options. As the fourth largest economy India has resilience and inherent strength to engage with the world on principles of equality and mutual respect," Sharma said. "Signing of a robust economic and trade agreement with the UK is most welcome. India should prioritise concluding India-EU Trade deal. It is equally important to engage with major trading blocs and regions: Africa Union, ASEAN, GCC and LAC to deepen market access and trade," Sharma said. He said the government must not succumb to Trump's "bullying tactics" to sign a "suboptimal" trade deal. "India must uphold its sovereignty and supreme national interests. Parliament and leaders of all political parties must be taken in confidence on any understanding reached with the US," Sharma said.
