Nets add C Justyn Hamilton to Las Vegas Summer League roster

USA Today3 days ago
The Brooklyn Nets are one day away from seeing most of their rookies play in the Las Vegas Summer League on the campus on the University of Las Vegas (UNLV). Brooklyn and its fans are looking forward to seeing players like BYU guard Egor Demin take the floor for the first time in the NBA, but the Nets are also shaking up the roster prior to Thursday's game.
In the Nets' roster for the upcoming Las Vegas Summer League, they added a new player to the roster in center Justyn Hamilton. Based on the roster that the team released on July 6, it looks like Hamilton will be replacing center Nick Ongenda, which could have happened for a number of reasons, but Brooklyn will be moving forward with the rest of the roster as is.
Hamilton, 26, went undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft after spending five seasons playing college basketball for Temple and Kent State. After going undrafted, Hamilton went on to spend the 2022-23 season with the Lugano Tigers of the LNA, a top-tier professional club league in Switzerland, where he averaged 19.9 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game while shooting 53.7% from the field and 30.3% from three-point land.
Hamilton, listed at 6-foot-10 and 205 pounds, is seemingly replacing Ongenda on the roster as the team is looking to play better this time around under coach Steve Hetzel than they did last season. Ironically enough, Hamilton will be able to show Brooklyn's opponent on Thursday, the Oklahoma City Thunder, what he can do on a different team within the NBA.
Hamilton spent last season as a member of the Thunder's G League team, the Oklahoma City Blue, and he averaged 7.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per contest while shooting 58.7% from the field and 16.7% from deep. Time will tell how much Hamilton will contribute to the Nets in Las Vegas, but he is one of three players that are listed as a center, along with Tyrese Samuel and Grant Nelson.

In Detroit Pistons' Summer League win, Bobi Klintman shows playmaking talent

LAS VEGAS — He's not a point guard, but good things tend to happen when Bobi Klintman has the ball. He was the Detroit Pistons' best playmaker in their 104-86 blowout of the New York Knicks in their Summer League opener on Friday, July 11. But it's not just that he had a team-high five assists — it's how he got them. Advertisement The 22-year-old forward ran a highlight pick-and-roll with big man Tolu Smith, delivering an on-time behind-the-back pass in the second quarter. On consecutive possessions in the first period, he assisted former Duke sharpshooter Trevor Keels to produce a wide-open 3-pointer and a layup. FRIDAY'S ACTION: Ron Holland shows off outside shot as Detroit Pistons blow out Knicks in Summer League Klintman, drafted in 2024's second round (at No. 37 overall), has received scant opportunity outside with the Pistons so far. But he played 32 games with the Motor City Cruise last year. His Cruise teammates who are with him in Las Vegas — Smith and Daniss Jenkins — are well-aware of his vision and eager to see him capitalize in summer league for the second year in a row. Advertisement 'Bobi's a pro,' said Smith, who had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. 'From not just scoring, from the aspect of being 6-10 and being able to handle the ball like that and make the right read every time. Him playing with a lot of great players makes him thrive even more. He's a great guy, he has great vision. All-around player.' Klintman didn't have a reputation as a playmaker during his lone season at Wake Forest in 2022-23, averaging less than a full assist (0.8) per game. Nor did his passing pop in his only season with Cairns Taipans in the National Basketball League in Australia a year later, when he averaged 0.7 assists and 1.6 turnovers. But in Vegas last summer, his vision was immediately noticeable. He posted 13 points, five assists and five rebounds in his 2024 Summer League debut, once again leading the team in assists. 'I feel like I've always been an underrated passer,' he said after his debut last July. 'When I started playing basketball, I started as a point guard because I was playing with my brother. I feel like I had that throughout my career. I've been able to show it more at different stages. I always try to do what the coach asks of me. When I can show that, I try to go out and do that.' Advertisement In the G League, Klintman averaged 12.2 points, seven rebounds and 4.3 assists. Of the Cruise's full-time players, only Jenkins averaged more assists per game. Detroit Pistons forward Paul Reed (7) and forward Bobi Klintman (34) celebrate 117-97 win over Boston Celtics during the second half at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2025. His first real opportunity for the Pistons didn't come until their season finale on the road against the Milwaukee Bucks. With the core roster shut down in the second half, Klintman had an all-around strong performance with 15 points (on 6-for-8 shooting), six assists and no turnovers in just under 23 minutes. 'I've been telling Bobi ever since he'd been doing stuff from this offseason, ever since our last game in the G League and whenever he last played, I just told him I'm proud of the way he's carried himself this year,' said Jenkins, who scored 18 points Friday. 'He's looked like a pro this year. And to me, his game has shown that.' Advertisement It's too early to say if Klintman will earn more minutes this season. But there's a gap at backup power forward after the team traded Simone Fontecchio to the Miami Heat. Other than Tobias Harris, there aren't any natural fours on the roster. Klintman will have to shoot the ball better than he did with the Cruise (30.1% on 4.7 attempts per game). But he has a longer track record as a solid shooter than as a passer, hitting 36.8% of his 3-pointers in college and 35.7% in Australia. Another strong showing in Vegas would provide more evidence that Klintman may be ready for a larger role. 'He's very serious about what he's trying to accomplish this year, how he's looked, how he's playing in the games,' Jenkins said. 'I think he looks like a real good player now.' Who has the most at stake for the Boston Celtics in the NBA's Las Vegas Summer League?

Who has the most at stake for the Boston Celtics in the NBA's 2025 Las Vegas Summer League? Is it third-time participant Jordan Walsh, or aspiring Boston rotation player Baylor Scheierman? What about one of the Celtics three picks in the 2025 NBA draft, Hugo Gonzalez, Amari Williams, or Max Shulga? Could it be one of the many unsigned prospects fighting for a shot to get into the league (or, in some cases, to latch on anywhere that will pay their players a decent paycheck)? Is it someone less obvious that has a major issue to prove people wrong about? The hosts of the CLNS Media "First to the Floor" podcast, Jake Issenberg, Ben Vallis, and Wayne Spooney, took some time on a recent episode of their show to talk it over. Check it out below! Miles Kelly scores 17 in Dallas Mavericks debut at Las Vegas NBA Summer League

The former Auburn forward scored 17 points in his NBA debut this week. While all the attention was being paid to Cooper Flagg, former Auburn guard Miles Kelly was looking to show his capabilities on the basketball court. He scored 17 points in the Mavericks first game of the Las Vegas Summer League and helped his team to an 87-85 win over the Lakers. Kelly was able to score more points than Flagg who had ten points in the game. He also scored more points than the Lakers second year players Bronny James (8) and Dalton Knecht (15). Kelly shot the ball well in the game. He was 6 of 12 from the floor and showed off his three-point shooting ability going three for eight. Kelly also added four rebounds and two assists. His teammate Flagg was 5 of 21 from the floor and missed all five attempts from long range. Kelly scored the Mavericks first basket of the game with 8:18 in the first quarter to make the score 5-3 in favor of the Lakers. Flagg did, however, have a big block late in the game that helped with the victory. For Kelly, it is just one game but more like this could lead to a spot on the Mavericks roster. NBA teams value players who are consistent from the three-point line and can play solid defense. The Mavericks will play again on Saturday when they play the San Antonio Spurs at 3 p.m. Central on ESPN. Four other Tigers from the 2024-25 team were in action in the Las Vegas Summer League on Thursday. The 76ers transitioned from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas and played against the Spurs to wrap up the day. Johni Broome came off the bench and scored eight points in a 111-70 loss. Dylan Cardwell saw time for the Kings in their 84-81 win over the Orlando Magic but did not log any meaningful statistics. Both Denver Jones and Chaney Johnson did not play for the Cleveland Cavaliers in their 116-115 loss to the Indiana Pacers.
