Teen from Allen, Texas wins Scripps National Spelling Bee with 'eclaircissement'

Fox News30-05-2025
No éclaircissement was needed after 13-year-old Faizan Zaki triumphed in the 21st round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The teen collapsed on the floor with excitement after correctly spelling "éclaircissement" and securing the national title — not to mention a trophy and $50,000. Zaki's win also coincided with a major milestone: the 100th anniversary of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
When spelling the "M-E-N-T" in "éclaircissement," Zaki, who hails from Allen, Texas, was understandably thrilled after coming in second place at last year's competition behind Bruhat Soma, who was 12 years old when he took home the trophy.
However, his victory didn't come without drama — Zaki nearly lost in round 18 when asked to spell "commelina." Zaki started saying "K-A-M" before stopping himself and telling head judge Mary Brooks to "just ring the bell," which she did. Zaki got another shot after 14-year-old Sarvadnya Kadam misspelled "Uaupes" in round 20 — paving the way for his win with "éclaircissement."
In a post on X congratulating the 13-year-old, the Scripps National Spelling Bee wrote that Zaki "left everything on stage."
"He's the GOAT. I actually believe that. He's really good, man. He's been doing it for so long, and he knows the dictionary in and out," Zaki's father, Said Zaki Anwar told ESPN.
Zaki's win was notable not only for the final word and the Bee's centennial, but also because it marked the first time in nearly 25 years that a former runner-up returned to win the title. According to ESPN, the last person to do so was Sean Conley, who was the 2001 champion. Zaki and Conley are members of an extremely exclusive club with just five members total from the event's 100 years.
The final three in the 2025 competition also included 11-year-old Sarv Dharavane, who would have been the competition's youngest champion since Nihar Janga, who won in 2016.
Zaki's stumble over "commelina" and subsequent comeback are not the first examples of drama at the spelling bee. This children's competition has produced a surprising number of historic moments. In 2019, the spelling bee's results were arguably some of the most controversial, as the competition ended with the only eight-way tie in the Scripps National Spelling Bee's history.

How to solve today's Wordle. Looking for Sunday's Wordle hints, clues and answer? You can find them here: Looking for a little help with today's Wordle? You've come to the right place. Whether you're stuck on your first guess or just need a final nudge, this daily guide offers hints, clues, and the answer to keep your streak alive—just watch out for spoilers! How To Solve Today's Wordle July just keeps trucking along. It's been nice, though. We got some rain this weekend and hopefully we'll get plenty more over the course of this week. Unlike so much of America, we are far from flooding. It's very dry and the forest is like a tinderbox waiting to explode. Other than that, it's quite lovely. School starts back up soon, with less than two weeks of summer break left, though my eldest is now a high school graduate and free from that obligation. My youngest starts 10th grade this coming semester. How did we all get so old? Enough rambling! We have a Wordle to solve! Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer: Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot or even against me, your humble narrator. See rules for Competitive Wordle toward the end of this post. Wordle Bot's Starting Word: SLATE My Starting Word Today: CHOIR (left me with 293 remaining words). The Hint: Flustered. The Clue: This Wordle has a double letter. Okay, spoilers below! The answer is coming! . . . Today's Wordle Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here. CHOIR is usually a word I use for my second guess, but I bumped it to the starting lineup today, which was apparently a mistake. 293 words remained, and just one lonely 'I' in yellow. I changed course and used Wordle Bot's favorite opener, SLATE, for guess #2 which only gave me a yellow 'T' but did cut the remaining solutions down to just six. I tried TYING for guess #3 and that left me with just one option: TIZZY for the win! I'm all in a tizzy because I solved this Wordle! Today's Wordle Bot The Bot and I each get 0 today for guessing in four and tying one another. Our July totals remain neck-and-neck: Erik: 8 points Wordle Bot: 9 points The word "tizzy" is a slang term that likely originated in the 1930s United States, though its exact origin is uncertain. It's believed to be a playful or altered formation—possibly influenced by words like "fizzy" or "dizzy"—evoking a sense of agitation or nervous excitement. It first appeared in print meaning a flustered or excited state, often described as being "in a tizzy." Roxbury Unity Parade celebrates Black culture and honors residents in Boston

Celebrating Black culture and excellence, the annual Roxbury Unity Parade took center stage Sunday in Boston. Kicking off at Madison Park High School, Roxbury families, elected officials and those running for office marched in solidarity. The parade is meant to honor the past and reflect the rich tapestry of Roxbury's legacy. "Today we celebrate Black beauty, Black brilliance, Black resilience, Black innovation," said Rep. Ayanna Pressley. Found Toy Burton said the parade began in 2017 after a summer of violence. "Let those who grow up here know that they come from a proud neighborhood," said Burton. "There's good happening here every day and that's why we give away awards to uplift those who uplift Roxbury every day." Wu and Kraft also took part in the event. "We are still in a moment where people are really struggling," said Wu. "The cost of just putting food on the table is still a big, big stress, so we are going to keep fighting, we're going to fight against the federal administration that's trying to attack our identities, take us backwards, rejects the beauty of our diverse communities." Kraft said there is a lot of work that needs to be done in the community. "Celebrating the legacy through a powerful parade the way Toy Burton has created is an easy thing to get behind," said Kraft. "The number one concern in the city is people don't feel listened to, they don't feel connected to the city and the first tangible issue that we hear about is housing. Housing is unaffordable and unattainable, especially for working families." Boston music legends and Roxbury natives Michael Bivens and Ron DeVoe from New Edition and Bell Biv DeVoe also made an appearance at the parade and helped present community awards.
