There is a lot of noise coming out of Toronto, but no one knows the full truth yet. While sources are saying different things, the Toronto Maple Leafs are developing a new contract for young forward Matthew Knies.
Although certain people think an agreement is near, others claim the two sides are yet far apart. Then then, what is actually happening?
Matthew Knies and Toronto Maple Leafs facing gap in contract numbers
NHL insider David Pagnotta revealed an update in The Fourth Period on Thursday, June 20, 2025, on contract talks between Matthew Knies and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Though both sides are trying to reach a new arrangement, they are not yet aligned.
Some sources close to the team believe the deal is almost finished.
But other people close to the situation told Pagnotta that there's still a big gap to fix. 'It could go either way,' said one source familiar with the talks. That's why fans are getting mixed messages right now.
Knies just finished his entry-level contract after scoring a career-high 29 goals and 58 points in the 2024–25 season. He played 78 regular season games. The 22-year-old forward also had five goals in 13 playoff games this year.

Over his two full NHL seasons, he has played 161 games with 44 goals and 50 assists.
Knies is one of three restricted free agent (RFA) forwards still unsigned by the Leafs, along with Nick Robertson and Pontus Holmberg. The Leafs want to keep all three players but are taking things one step at a time.
Matthew Knies asking for more money than Toronto Maple Leafs are offering
According to Pagnotta's report, the main issue in the talks is money. The Toronto Maple Leafs want to offer Knies a deal worth $4–$5 million per year.
But Knies and his agent are asking for closer to $7 million per year.

The final amount depends on how long the contract will be. If it's a long-term deal, Knies might accept a smaller yearly amount. But if it's a short contract, he could get a chance to become a free agent around age 26 or 27. That would give him a better shot at a big contract later.
The Leafs have around $25 million in salary cap space, based on data from PuckPedia. So, they do have the money to keep Knies. But both sides need to agree on the length and salary before anything is made official.

NHL Rumors: Austin emerges as top contender for $2 billion expansion franchise amid growing competition

Austin, Texas, is emerging as a strong contender for a new NHL expansion team (Getty Images) The NHL may soon welcome a new team, and a surprising city is rising through the ranks—Austin, Texas. Long overshadowed by nearby Dallas and Houston in the world of pro sports, Austin is now making headlines as it officially joins the list of cities competing for an NHL expansion franchise. With the league setting the franchise fee at a staggering $2 billion, the race is quickly becoming one of the most expensive and competitive in hockey history. Why Austin is gaining serious traction in the NHL expansion race Austin's pitch has something the others lack: a relatively untapped pro sports market. Unlike Atlanta, Houston, Indianapolis, and New Orleans—cities already home to NFL, NBA, or MLB teams—Austin would be offering the NHL an exclusive stage. With no existing major league team to compete with, a new hockey franchise could dominate the city's growing and youthful population, which has long craved a team of its own. — frank_seravalli (@frank_seravalli) That could give Austin a critical edge. As Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli reported, the NHL has been fielding informal proposals despite not launching a formal expansion process. Commissioner Gary Bettman confirmed that, stating, 'We have no pending applications and we're not seeking to initiate a formal process at this point.' However, Bettman also outlined the league's strict standards for any future team, saying it must check four key boxes: 'a cohesive and well-heeled ownership group, an NHL-ready arena, a growing market and a way to make the league better than it was.' NHL expansion remains deliberate but inevitable While no new franchises are imminent, momentum is building. The last major wave of expansion happened in 2000, when the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild joined the NHL. Doug MacLean, the Blue Jackets' GM at the time, reflected on the era: 'It's pretty bizarre when you think about it… things had been picked pretty clean by two previous expansions in back-to-back years.' Since then, the league has remained stable, though notable shifts have occurred. The Arizona Coyotes folded and were replaced by the Utah Mammoth, and the Seattle Kraken and Vegas Golden Knights brought new life to the league. The Atlanta Hawks are making waves in the offseason as potential suitors for Phoenix Suns guard Bradley Beal . With +400 odds to land the three-time All-Star, per Bovada, Atlanta is among the favorites to pull off a major trade before the 2025-26 NBA season tips off. Why the Atlanta Hawks Are Targeting Bradley Beal The Atlanta Hawks have aggressively retooled their roster around Trae Young and a promising young core. Adding a proven scorer like Beal could elevate them from playoff hopefuls to genuine contenders in the Eastern Conference. Beal, a 6'4' guard, brings veteran leadership and scoring punch. Despite recent injury struggles, his track record as a 20+ PPG scorer makes him an attractive option for Atlanta. Suns' Stance: Beal Likely on the Move Phoenix appears ready to part ways with Beal after trading Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets. Suns insider John Gambadoro didn't mince words about Beal's future: "There's a zero percent chance that Bradley Beal is back on this Suns team next year." This opens the door for the Hawks, Bucks, Warriors, and Wizards to pursue a deal. Obstacles in a Potential Trade - Massive Contract: Beal is owed $251 million over five years, with two seasons remaining. - Injury Concerns: He hasn't played 60+ games since 2020-21. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 백오피스까지 맞춤 제작… 콜렉션비, 고도몰 커스터마이징으로 입점 브랜드 관리 고도화 NHN COMMERCE 더 알아보기 Undo - Declining Production: Only one 20+ PPG season since signing his max deal. Still, Atlanta might view him as a calculated risk. Pairing Beal with Trae Young could create one of the league's most dynamic backcourts. How Beal Fits with the Atlanta Hawks - Scoring Boost: Adds a reliable second option alongside Young. - Veteran Presence: Guides young players like Jalen Johnson and Kobe Bufkin. - Floor Spacing: Career 37.2% three-point shooter helps spread the floor. Justin Tucker's quiet NFL return plan sparks outrage after sexual misconduct suspension

Insiders suggest Justin Tucker's exceptional talent might lead to a return (Image via AP) Justin Tucker, long considered a model of reliability and precision in the NFL , has now become the league's latest cautionary tale. Following a 10-game suspension for violating the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy, the Baltimore legend faces serious fallout amid disturbing misconduct allegations. While no formal admission of guilt has been made, Tucker's decision to accept the suspension without appeal is being viewed as a strategic gamble — not a resignation. NFL's most accurate kicker falls hard — but could still rise again According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the 35-year-old kicker, Justin Tucker is playing the long game. 'He accepted the suspension right now to start the clock,' Pelissero said on The Rich Eisen Show. 'Come November and December… we all know, Rich, there are not enough good kickers in the NFL.' It's a brutal truth: accuracy becomes currency in the postseason, and few legs have proven as golden as Tucker's. With an all-time best field goal percentage of 89.1%, and a record 66-yarder on his résumé, Tucker remains a valuable asset — scandal or not. A punishment worse than Deshaun Watson's? NFL's silent discipline strategy in full view What makes Tucker's case even more controversial is its comparison to Deshaun Watson's suspension. Like Watson, Tucker's punishment didn't result from a courtroom verdict but from the league's lower threshold for evidence. Pelissero didn't mince words: 'This is not a court of law. This is not beyond a reasonable doubt… this is, you know, we believe that a violation occurred here.' Tucker reportedly chose to take the hit now to avoid dragging the case into the fall, when a fresh round of media attention could have destroyed any hope of a quiet return. 'If you got a fresh document after a suspension decision in September, October, November… that brings all this back to the consciousness,' Pelissero explained. The NFL, it seems, has perfected a containment playbook — issue suspensions quietly, avoid public admissions, and wait for the news cycle to move on. As with Watson, Tucker's case is less about legal guilt and more about managing perception. Despite the fallout, insiders say it's not over. Pelissero floated the possibility that 'somebody… sitting there and going, 'All right, let's bring in the most accurate field goal kicker of all time,'' might just take the PR hit. Also Read: 'Disappointed with the decision': Justin Tucker's agent slams NFL suspension, says league ignored integrity and career legacy If the right team finds itself desperate enough in December, Justin Tucker's phone might ring. And when it does, the message will be clear: talent always gets another chance — even when reputations don't. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Watch Episode 2 here.
