How a conflict strains pop culture

The Star4 days ago
While conflict raged between the powerful militaries of India and Pakistan, a battle was also fought on the cultural frontlines despite years of shared love for films and music.
The deadly fighting in early May – the worst in decades – affected artistes previously untouched by animosity between their leaders.
Ali Gul Pir, a Pakistani rapper and comedian with a huge Indian following, released a song years ago mocking Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
While he was spared consequences then, in May this year his YouTube channel and Instagram profile were blocked in India.
'Indians now recognise that the digital space serves as a bridge between Pakistanis and Indians, and they seem intent on severing that connection,' Pir said.
The collapse in bilateral relations was caused by a deadly April attack on tourists in India-administered Kashmir, which New Delhi blamed on Islamabad.
Pakistan denied the allegation and, after tit-for-tat diplomatic retaliation, their militaries fought for four days before a ceasefire was reached.
The conflict hit the music industry for the first time, with Pakistani singer Annural Khalid also remembering how her Indian following dropped off.
'Delhi was my top listening city before the ban,' said Khalid, who has 3.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
'I suffered a great loss in the audience' from India, she said.
'Listeners were deprived of content because music was turned into something it is not,' Khalid added.
The conflict also scrubbed out some prior exchanges, such as the soundtrack of the 2017 film Raees on Spotify in India.
It now shows only Indian actor Shah Rukh Khan without his Pakistani co-star Mahira Khan.

The same traumas
With Pakistan producing just a handful of movies each year under strict censorship rules, Bollywood has always proven popular among viewers.
'I grew up watching Bollywood. We have the same traumas, we have the same history, we have the same stories,' said Pakistani film critic Sajeer Shaikh.
Pakistani actors and directors have for decades seen making it to Bollywood as the ultimate recognition.
But this month, Indian star Diljit Dosanjh announced his latest movie Sardaar Ji 3, which features four Pakistani actors, would be released 'overseas only', after New Delhi banned Pakistani content and artistes from productions.
Abir Gulaal, a love story starring Pakistan's Fawad Khan and Indian actor Vaani Kapoor, was scheduled to hit Indian cinemas on May 9, but the release was postponed.
Even some in the industry who had previously backed the cross- border artistic trade changed their tune last month.
'Everything should be banned... cricket, films, everything,' said Indian actor Suniel Shetty, who has a big fan following in Pakistan.
He starred in the 2004 movie Main Hoon Na, which subtly promotes peace between India and Pakistan.
'It's something really unfortunate about politics, creating that rift and putting boundaries around art,' said Dua Zahra, assistant manager at Warner Bros South Asia's music label in Pakistan.

Let's just make art
As part of its measures in the wake of the Kashmir attack, New Delhi's ban on some Pakistani YouTube channels included private broadcaster HUM TV.
The channel, which says around 40% of its viewers are from India, simply told its fans to use a VPN to continue watching.
Since Modi took office more than a decade ago, many Indian critics and filmmakers have warned that Bollywood is now increasingly promoting his government's Hindu nationalist ideology.
While the conflict has created divisions on the cultural scene, there are signs that the trade will endure.
Over a month after the ceasefire, three Indian films were in the top 10 on Netflix Pakistan, while the top 20 trending songs in India included two Pakistani tracks.
Pir, the rapper and comedian, vowed to 'bridge gaps'.
'Let's not make war, let's just make art,' he said.

Ejen Ali 2: Hit movie scores big in Indonesia as versatile actor Azman Zulkiply continues to shine as voice actor

Ejen Ali The Movie 2 (EATM2), the highly anticipated sequel to Malaysia's hit animated feature, is enjoying a strong run in Indonesia, with its theatrical release now extended to 240 cinemas, more than triple the number when it premiered on June 27. In just five days, the film has attracted over 174,000 moviegoers of all ages, especially children, marking a significant milestone for the homegrown animation in a competitive entertainment market. WAU Animation chief executive officer and EATM2 director Usamah Zaid Yasin said the team had not expected such an overwhelming reception, particularly as Indonesia does not operate a 'mandatory screening' system like Malaysia. "We entered the market at the perfect time during the school holidays, backed by strong local partnerships, distributors and a communications agency that truly understands the Indonesian audience,' he told Bernama. Usamah attributed the film's early momentum to the loyal Ejen Ali digital fanbase in Indonesia, cultivated over the years through YouTube and social media, alongside strategic collaborations with Indonesian animation studios and a soundtrack feature with popular local band Nidji. He said these localisation efforts gave the film a familiar touch and a sense of ownership for Indonesian viewers, and he expects viewership to continue rising in the coming weeks. With momentum building, EATM2 is expected to debut in Cambodia, following recent successful runs in Singapore and Brunei, cementing its growing regional footprint. In another development, there is no doubt that Rizwan's character in Ejen Ali The Movie 2 (EATM2) is one of the characters that most captured the audience's attention, not only because of his solid fighting skills, but also because of his cool appearance and gruff voice. Behind this character stands the figure of a very experienced and versatile actor, Azman Zulkiply. Interestingly, Rizwan is not the only character voiced by Azman in EATM2. He also plays the roles of General Rama and Viktor, each representing three different racial backgrounds, namely Malay, Chinese, and Indian. Of course, it is not easy to bring a character to life with different speaking styles and accents, but Azman said he loved the experience. "This is my proudest achievement in my career. (EATM2) What a ride, the opportunity to play three characters was an amazing experience," said Azman in a special interview. "I have many friends. Malays, Chinese and Indians, they are amazing people. That is why this country is so great. It is my utmost honour that I could voice over for all three characters. "I thank the EATM 2 team for giving me this opportunity, it is something I will never forget," added Azman. Even more impressive is that Azman has been voicing these three characters for almost a decade, spanning more than half of his career in voice acting, and it also makes it easier for him to delve deeply into each character and give each one a unique touch. "Being involved here is one of the happiest moments of my career. I'm so glad EATM 2 is also doing so well in many countries besides Malaysia. The support is wonderful and I hope we keep on going for more," Said Azman. For the record, EATM 2 is produced by WAU Animation in collaboration with Primeworks Studios (PWS). The film, which follows the story of a 12-year-old boy who accidentally becomes a spy, has grossed nearly RM60 million to date, with more regional releases in the pipeline.

His wife, Kelly, announced his death Friday in a statement to the website Deadline. Advertisement Born in Sydney in 1968, McMahon initially worked as a model before moving to acting in television, first in Australia and later in the United States. He made a name for himself playing Cole Turner, a demon in the fantasy television series "Charmed", which ran from 2000 to 2005. "I'm heartbroken," series co-star Alyssa Milano wrote on Instagram after he died in Florida. "Losing him feels unreal. Too soon. Too unfair. Rest, my friend. I'll carry your laugh with me," she added. McMahon was nominated for an Emmy in 2005 for "Nip/Tuck" (2003-2010), another hit US series, in which he played an unscrupulous plastic surgeon. Producers Warner Bros. Television released a brief statement on Facebook paying tribute to his work on the series. McMahon also appeared in a number of films, playing villain Doctor Doom in two films from the Fantastic Four superhero franchise. More recently, he appeared alongside Nicolas Cage in "The Surfer", presented at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. His final screen appearance was in the Netflix whodunnit series "The Residence", released this year, in which he played the Australian prime minister. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
