Bohm, Schwarber each hit 2-run homers to power Phillies past Reds, 5-1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Alec Bohm and Kyle Schwarber each hit two-run homers and Edmundo Sosa added a solo shot to lift the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday.
Phillies starter Ranger Suárez was pulled by manager Rob Thomson after throwing just 80 pitches in five innings. He struck out six and lowered his ERA to 1.99, putting the left-hander in prime position to make his second straight All-Star team.
Suárez allowed seven earned runs in his first start of the season, and has now allowed only 11 over his last 11 starts. The circumstances of his early exit were not immediately known, Suárez had pitched at least seven innings in each of his last five starts and thrown at least six innings in all but his first start of the year.
Bohm hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning off Reds starter Nick Lodolo (5-6) for a 3-1 lead and Schwarber connected on his 27th homer of the year in the eighth to make it 5-1.
Will Benson hit a solo homer off Suárez for the Reds in the fifth, and Sosa followed with a solo shot in the bottom of half of the inning off Lodolo to make it 1-1.
Lodolo struck out eight and allowed three runs over six innings.
Jordan Romano (1-3) earned the win and was the first of four Phillies relievers to each toss a scoreless inning.
Key moment
Cincinnati's first two runners reached in the eighth against Orion Kerkering. Spencer Steer grounded into a double play off the Phillies reliever and Noelvi Marte was retired on a comebacker to end the threat.
Key stat
Trea Turner had two hits to add to his NL-best total with 108. He also leads the league in multi-hit games with 31.
Up next

Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei driven off field by ambulance with apparent head injury

Associated Press SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei was driven off the field by ambulance with an apparent head injury at the end of a Major League Soccer match against the Columbus Crew on Sunday. Frei jumped forward to make a play on a free kick, and as he came down, his head collided with the knee of a Crew player. Frei dropped to the turf at Lumen Field and teammates signaled to the sideline for help. With the match tied at 1-1 deep in stoppage time, Crew coach Wilfried Nancy and Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer appealed to the referee to end it. As Frei was stretchered to the waiting ambulance, Seattle fans chanted his first name. Frei, 39, has played for the Sounders since 2014. He helped Seattle win the MLS Cup in 2016 and 2019, and he was named MLS Cup MVP in 2016. He was an All-Star in 2017. Born in Switzerland, Frei's family moved to the United States when he was a teenager and he was a standout at the University of California. ___ AP soccer: recommended in this topic

Starling Marte's knee is latest Mets injury concern after rare start in field

Try it free Starling Marte had three more hits Sunday, but suffered an injury scare to his troublesome right knee in the bottom of the ninth that could sideline him. Carlos Mendoza said Marte's knee 'flared up' and he was clearly in discomfort after taking a pitch during an at-bat against Devin Williams in a 6-4 loss to the Yankees at Citi Field. Advertisement He stayed in the game after a visit from the training staff, but only jogged slowly to first base when he grounded out to third for the second out of the inning. Marte was going for tests Sunday night. The 36-year-old, whose season ended almost exactly a year ago due to a right knee injury, said he was 'not really' worried about the knee's status. Starling Marte made a rare start in the outfield during the Mets-Yankees game on July 6, 2025. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Advertisement But when asked if he thought he'd be able to stay off the IL, Marte said, 'I don't know yet.' After the knee limited Marte to 94 games last season, he was also hobbled during spring training. But he'd come on over his previous 29 games heading into Sunday, with an OPS of .832 over that stretch and followed it up with a third straight multihit game. Advertisement Marte also started in the outfield for just the fifth time this season — and first time since June 1 — on Sunday, when he was in left, with Brandon Nimmo as the DH. Marte said he felt good on defense and it wasn't until that final at-bat — after he'd singled three times and stolen a base (also his first since June 1) — that he felt discomfort. Mostly limited to DH duties this season, Marte has been used as a right-handed leadoff hitter, with Francisco Lindor bumped down to the No. 2 spot in the lineup, and has hit well there. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Advertisement The Mets figured to have some roster decisions to make before the All-Star break, with Jesse Winker — sidelined for over two months with an oblique strain — on a rehab assignment and likely due to return to the lineup this week. Marte is in the final year of a four-year, $78 million deal. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND METS STATS After the Mets failed to off-load Marte in the offseason, he initially had difficulty adjusting to a role in which he didn't play every day. His production has improved, and with the Mets dealing with injuries, Marte's resurgence has been a welcome one, but it may be halted if his knee doesn't respond well.

Bryson Stott homers amid slump to help Phillies get win as Zack Wheeler dominates

Bryson Stott doesn't need anyone to tell him he's struggling. The numbers speak for themselves. Even though the averages stare at the Phillies' second baseman straight in the face on a daily basis, he's not feeling sorry for himself. When Stott does get the opportunity to come through for his team, he wants to deliver. "It's been tough the last couple weeks," Stott said. "Just because it gets tough doesn't mean you stop working, or stop being competitive. I'm gonna put in as many good at bats as I can." The Phillies' offense was in the midst of wasting the best Zack Wheeler start since he signed with the Phillies in 2020. Wheeler allowed just one hit through eight innings — a solo home run to Austin Hays, the lone blemish — yet was stuck in a 1-1 stalemate in the bottom of the eighth inning. Waiting to go out in the ninth inning, Wheeler was hoping for the shot at the complete game. The Phillies had to do their part and score a run. With a runner on first base, enter Stott. The same player who was 2 for his last 21, including a 1 for 11 start to July. Stott blasted a home run that hit the right field scoreboard, propelling the Phillies to victory over the Reds and giving them the series win. The home run was massive because it set Wheeler up to complete the one-hitter, but also for a Phillies second baseman who has struggled to hit for the majority of the season. "He comes in. He's the same guy. That's the key to success, right? He comes in and he keeps working," said Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, who was named to his third All-Star team on Sunday along with Wheeler. "That's the biggest thing. He keeps working in the cage and works on getting where he needs to be." Heather Barry / Getty Images Stott entered Sunday's game hitting .204 with a .538 OPS since May 1. The average actually dipped to .203 prior to the home run, as Stott would have ranked 251st out of 275 hitters since that date amongst hitters with 100-plus at bats. To say Stott is struggling at the plate would be an understatement. He provides significantly more value to the Phillies than his bat. "The biggest thing is him realizing and everyone realizing how valuable of a player that he is to us," Schwarber said. "Not everything falls down to an offensive hand. What he does on a daily basis when he's out on the field and he's making plays for the guys. That's what he does. That's great. That's baseball. "There's gonna be times that you go through times that you feel like you're struggling offensively, but that's why there are different facets of the game that you're able to kind of pick up the slack somewhere else. He's great at defense, he's a great baserunner. Things like that, especially when he's on the bench and cheering on the boys. I think that's another facet (of it)." The Phillies have Stott's back. He's not going anywhere and not vacating second base, even if he isn't getting the opportunities against left-handed pitching like he used to. When Stott is in the lineup, he's shown where he's an asset to the organization. Sunday's home run may sound cliché, but that hit could go a long way toward turning around Stott's season. On brand for Stott, he was thinking about Wheeler and getting him the victory he deserved. That's the player the Phillies see every day in the clubhouse. "We wanted him to finish the game, get him in line for the win," Stott said. "So it was pretty special."
