Mariners Predicted To Swing Blockbuster Eugenio Suárez Trade To Win AL West

FanSided's Quinn Everts recently suggested the Seattle Mariners could steal the American League West from the Houston Astros if they're able to pull off a blockbuster trade for Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez. Everts pitched a hypothetical trade that would send pitching prospects Ryan Sloan and Marcelo Perez. "Rookie Ben Williamson has been solid defensively at the hot corner, but doesn't provide much at the plate (.612 OPS), and if this team wants any chance at catching the Astros in the AL West, it needs another bat or two to strengthen a lineup that falls off quickly after a strong first four," Everts wrote. "So a deal for Suárez makes perfect sense from the M's perspective. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 21: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks reacts after hitting a solo home run against the Houston Astros during the third inning at Chase Field on July 21, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. More"Eventually, Houston's injury misfortune has to catch up to them (I think) so the Mariners need to lock in, add a bat, and give themselves a chance at the division. Yes, they'll have to give up talent to do it, and yes it would hurt — it would also be 100 percent worth it if they win the division." The Mariners need to make a move, and this is the one to make. Adding Suárez while he's hitting the way that he is to a lineup with Cal Raleigh, who's in the midst of a generational season, would be massive. But it might take a bit more of a prospect return to land the star. The New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs will likely go after Suárez rather aggressively, with the Yankees potentially offering their top pitching prospects to bring him to the Bronx. The Mariners will need to keep up in a bidding war, or Suárez could be headed to one of the bigger markets. More MLB: Yankees Set To Battle Dodgers In Trade Deadline Bidding War For Star

Nothing would be easy in a potential Yankees' pursuit of Eugenio Suarez

TORONTO — The Yankees' first hurdle to acquiring Eugenio Suárez will be the Diamondbacks actually deciding to sell. Then comes the stiffer challenge: beating out other contenders who also happen to need a third baseman or power bat. Because Suárez is not just the top third baseman who might be on the market, he is also likely the top bat that could be available. But while the Yankees are pursuing the 34-year-old slugger, who entered Tuesday tied with Aaron Judge for second in the majors with 36 home runs, they are far from alone. The Cubs, Mariners, Tigers and perhaps even Brewers could use help at the hot corner, and all of those teams came into the year with a farm system ranked higher than the Yankees, according to Baseball America and Meanwhile, Suárez is only raising his price tag by the day — assuming the Diamondbacks actually sell, as they entered Tuesday sitting at 50-51 and 5 ¹/₂ games back of the final playoff spot in the National League. Suárez had been doing his best to try to keep them from being sellers, crushing 18 home runs over his past 32 games while batting .325 with a 1.220 OPS. 'He's obviously having a great year,' Aaron Boone said. 'He's been a really good power hitter in the league for a long time. I'm sure he's going to be talked about by a lot of teams. Arizona seems like one of those teams that you don't know what they're doing either. They're kind of on the periphery of contention right now, but have obviously had some guys injured. So we'll see.' Suárez has his warts, like his below-average fielding and high strikeout rate. But his bat would be head and shoulders above what the Yankees have gotten from the position this season — aside from the time Jazz Chisholm Jr. spent there before moving back to second base — with a mix of Oswald Peraza, Jorbit Vivas, the since-DFA'd Pablo Reyes and injured Oswaldo Cabrera. Eugenio Suárez will have many more suitors than just the Yankees if the Diamondbacks decide to be sellers before the MLB trade deadline. Getty Images Entering Tuesday, the Yankees had received 0.1 bWAR from their third basemen this season, which ranked 16th in the majors. Their 0.7 fWAR at the position was tied for 21st. The Cubs had been even weaker by both versions of WAR — -0.3 in bWAR (21st) -0.4 in fWAR (29th). Though third base might be the top need of those other contending teams, there is an argument to be made that the biggest Yankees need is arms — particularly in the bullpen, but also a starter. The bullpen has been overworked, exposed and injured over the past few months, while the Yankees offense has scored the third-most runs per game despite the black hole at third base. So how they allocate their resources in the farm system — with top prospect George Lombard Jr. likely untouchable and the red-hot Spencer Jones perhaps joining him — to get deals done before the July 31 trade deadline remains to be seen. The Diamondbacks are believed to be targeting pitching in return if they deal Suárez. The top Yankees pitching prospect, Cam Schlittler, made his second big league start on Tuesday, while most of their other top young arms are at High-A or Double-A. Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon could be another option for the Yankees if they're unable to land Eugenio Suárez before the MLB trade deadline. AP If the Yankees are not able to match up with the Diamondbacks, their secondary options at third base include the Rockies' Ryan McMahon and the Pirates' Ke'Bryan Hayes. Both are signed beyond this year (McMahon through 2027 and Hayes through 2029). Both are talented defenders (especially Hayes) but have below-average OPS (especially Hayes) this season. 'I think McMahon would flourish for them,' an NL scout said. 'He'll be playing more meaningful games. He's a Gold Glove defender at third base, really, really good. He would extremely stabilize the left side of their infield. I think with the short porch in New York, being a left-handed hitter, I think he could flourish there.'

Mariners Predicted To Reunite With Eugenio Suárez In Deadline Blockbuster

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Eugenio Suárez sweepstakes might be the most exciting storyline to follow at the trade deadline as the Arizona Diamondbacks slugger has gotten hot at the perfect time. There are bound to be multiple teams vying for his services, but Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer recently predicted the Seattle Mariners would be the team to land a blockbuster trade for the slugger. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 20: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks celebrates after hitting a three run home run against the St. Louis Cardinals during the first inning at Chase Field on July 20,... PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 20: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks celebrates after hitting a three run home run against the St. Louis Cardinals during the first inning at Chase Field on July 20, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. More"Let's start with a nice, easy layup: Eugenio Suárez is totally going to be a Seattle Mariner again, folks," Rymer wrote. "He's definitely going somewhere in the coming days, and not just because the Arizona Diamondbacks are going nowhere while they're in fourth place in the National League West. He's ridiculously hot right now, to a point where he has risen to No. 1 on ESPN's trade deadline big board. "The Mariners are interested in Suárez, according to ESPN's Buster Olney, and there's a lot more than just familiarity at play there. They have gotten only five home runs from third base this season, so scoring an upgrade the likes of Suárez would only further solidify them as a contender for their first-ever World Series appearance." While teams like the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs are bound to enter the Suárez sweepstakes, a reunion with the Mariners could make the most sense. Seattle needs to take advantage of this season. Cal Raleigh has been generational at the top of their lineup, and the pitching staff has dominated, like usual. Adding another potential 50-home run bat at the top of the lineup would make Seattle a scary team to play down the stretch. The Mariners have the prospects to make a deal happen, though it's been reported that the Diamondbacks are looking for pitching prospects in return for any big trade. Seattle needs to make a deal like this if it wants a real chance to contend for the World Series. More MLB: Astros Landing $8 Million Slugger Would Boost Lineup Ahead Of Trade Deadline

Yankees' Aaron Boone Breaks Silence on Eugenio Suárez as Trade Rumors Swirl

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees have needed an upgrade at third base almost all season. Oswaldo Cabrera started the season there, but after he was injured, Jazz Chisholm Jr. moved to the hot corner. Cabrera was never going to be the answer there, and Chisholm's struggles defensively forced the Yankees to move him back to second base and to release DJ LeMahieu. Now Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas are the main options at third base. As the trade deadline approaches, many rumors have linked the Yankees to Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez. Suárez was an All-Star this season, and Yankees' manager Aaron Boone spoke on him as the trade deadline is just over a week away. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 20: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks celebrates after hitting a three run home run against the St. Louis Cardinals during the first inning at Chase Field on July 20,... More"He's been a really good power hitter in the league for a long time," Boone told reporters, per New York Daily News' Gary Phillips. "I'm sure he's going to be talked about by a lot of teams," Boone added, per Phillips. "Arizona seems like one of those teams that you don't know what they're doing either. They're kind of on the periphery of contention right now, but obviously have had some guys injured, so we'll see." Suárez has hit 36 home runs this season, and would be a great addition to the Yankees. His defense may not be the best, but what he would add to their offense would outweigh that. He has an .891 OPS at Yankee Stadium in his career, so he could end up continuing on his great season. More MLB: Jarren Duran Trade? MLB Insider Lists Braves As 'Best Fit'

Cubs Looking At Diamondbacks 35-Home Run Third Baseman To Bolster Offense

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Chicago Cubs are looking to capture the National League Central for the first time since the COVID-19 impacted 2020 season, but the Milwaukee Brewers caught up to them over the weekend. Per reports from The Athletic, the Cubs are keeping tabs on Arizona Diamondbacks power-hitting third baseman Eugenio Suárez. More Photo bySuárez is setting up to be the premier power bat available at the deadline -- if the Diamondbacks make him available, that is. The Diamondbacks entered Monday's game against the Houston Astros coming off a three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals in the desert over the weekend and 4 1/2 games back of the final wild card spot in the National League. If the Diamondbacks falter over the next two weeks, they could end up moving Suárez at the trade deadline, and the Cubs should be in the mix for his services. Suárez has hit 35 home runs entering Monday, and if he were traded would be the first player to be traded after hitting 35 home runs in MLB history. The Cubs are looking for an upgrade over Matt Shaw at third base, who is hitting .210 on the season with three home runs. Shaw is a rookie and could be the future of the position for the Cubs down the road. The Cubs would be well served in adding a veteran hitter like Suárez for the stretch run. The next week is crucial for the Diamondbacks, and one slip-up could shift the franchise's focus to trading the All-Star third baseman. The Cubs should be calling on him leading up to the deadline to strike a deal for the slugger before the July 31 deadline. More MLB: Twins Predicted To Cut Ties With Former Gold Glove Outfielder
