The Last 5-Speed Manual in the US Is Gone as Nissan Discontinues Base Versa

The Drive29-05-2025
The latest car news, reviews, and features.
The $17,190 base-model Nissan Versa S, the last U.S.-market production car with a five-speed manual, is ending production. According to Automotive News , the manual Versa is the latest automotive tariff victim, as all Versas are built at Nissan's Aguascalientes, Mexico, plant and the base car is least popular. Looks like Nissan is trying to create as much savings as possible to handle the 25% tariff on cars imported from Mexico.
A Nissan spokesperson told Auto News that it's trimming the fat down to the models with the 'strongest business performance.' The Drive reached out to Nissan for a comment, and we'll update this story if we get more details.
When you go to Nissan's site and check out the Versa, the first thing you see under its name is 'Get the Nissan you want free from new tariffs.' So if Nissan is going to eat the additional tariff cost for customers, it can't be manufacturing cars that won't sell well. And manuals reportedly only accounted for 5% of Versa sales in 2024. Nissan
As the manual Versa dies, it brings the five-speed manual transmission down with it. What was once a common drivetrain configuration is now a memory—when the last stick-shift Versa leaves a Nissan lot, there won't be any new five-speed manual vehicles for sale in the United States. Only six-speed and a few seven-speed manuals will remain.
That isn't much of a surprise, given that six-speeds have been the norm for years. Nissan killed the five-speed manual in the last-generation Frontier pickup in 2020, Volkswagen killed off the entry-level five-speed manual Golf after the Mk7 ended in 2021, and Mitsubishi dropped the Mirage's five-speed in 2023. Still, this feels like a minor moment in car culture.
Killing the manual Versa won't be a big sales hit, since barely any customers wanted it, but it will end Nissan's ability to market a sub-$18,000 car.
It's always a bummer to see a manual transmission die, since they're are so few of them left. But I'm not sure how many people will care about the ancient five-speed Versa's. It's like when Lexus ended SC430 production, which was the last car with a cassette player. When a technology is so far past its sell-by date, does it really matter that it's gone?
If you happen to buy one of the last stick-shift Versas, or if you've got one already, drop us a line because we're curious to hear what they're like to drive.

Nissan Launches Practical Murano Lease Deal For July

The Nissan Murano is a crossover fit for families of five, with spacious seating and a pretty nice list of standard features. While it isn't available in hybrid form, Nissan's midsize crossover comes new and improved for the 2025 model year. If you're in the market for a new family hauler, you can get behind the wheel of a Nissan Murano for as little as $289 per month. This specific lease deal requires $5,929 due at signing and includes an annual 10,000-mile allowance. The Nissan Murano is largely slept on due to the brand's past troubles, but many of those issues seem to be gone for good with the launch of the fourth generation. The midsize crossover has been redesigned from the ground up and comes in three trim levels. The base SV trim is subject to some of the best lease deals, but don't let its place on the roster fool you. Starting at $40,470, the SV trim comes locked and loaded with upscale amenities often reserved for more expensive models. The 2025 Nissan Murano arrives with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Japanese automaker has done away with the V6-CVT combination from the previous generation. With its new powertrain, the Murano delivers a peppy 241 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The all-new Murano earns up to an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, combining for 23 mpg. The Nissan Murano can also tow up to 1,500 lbs. The base Murano SV comes stocked with premium amenities, including heated front seats wrapped in leatherette upholstery. A 12.3-inch touchscreen display comes standard across all trim levels, as does wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Wireless charging makes the list of standard equipment as well. With the rear seats in place, the Murano offers up to 32.9 cu ft. of cargo space. In styling alone, the 2025 Nissan Murano stands out from the crowd. It rides on 20-inch gloss black alloy wheels that mesh well with LED lighting. A sweeping roofline and curvaceous contours create an upscale look. All models come equipped with a power liftgate, which is an absolute must-have feature for parents with younger children. Nissan Murano lease offers for July vary according to the market, and some areas are eligible for additional cash back offers. For example, Miami residents can get behind the wheel of a Murano SV FWD for as little as $359 per month, with $4,388 due at signing. That offer is also eligible for $1,000 and $750 NMAC cash back incentives. Those living in the Charlotte area can get that same model for $399 per month and $4,378 down, and may be eligible for a $1,000 NMAC cash back incentive. Residents of Denver can put a Nissan Murano SV FWD in their driveway for $399 per month and a $4,449 initial payment. Those living in New York City can get a Murano SV AWD for a rather low monthly payment of $289, but will need to put $5,929 down. Detroit residents can also get an SV AWD model for as little as $349 per month, with $4,579 due at signing. Those on the hunt for a new family crossover in Chicago can get a Murano SV AWD for just $369 per month and $4,579 down. All four cities are eligible for a $1,000 NMAC loyalty cash back incentive, but only Chicago and Detroit can take advantage of an additional $500 lease bonus cash offer. Austin and Seattle share an identical lease deal, a Murano SV FWD for a $419 monthly payment and $4,439 due at signing. Only Austin is eligible for a $1,000 NMAC loyalty cash back incentive, though. Residents of sunny Los Angeles can get behind the wheel of a new Nissan Murano SV FWD for just $379 per month, with a $4,439 down payment. All lease offers are valid through August 4th and span a 36-month term with an annual 10,000-mile allowance. Clearly designed to stand out from the crowd, the all-new 2025 Nissan Murano turns heads with sleek styling and a comfortable, yet practical interior. Add in the convenient infotainment tech, and the Murano has the makings of an all-encompassing family crossover. If you want to put a new Nissan Murano in your garage, don't hesitate! These lease offers are only valid through August 4th, after all! Lease offers may vary by location, vehicle configuration, and are subject to credit approval. Advertised monthly payments don't necessarily include taxes, title, registration, or other fees. Japan is facing slowing exports and trade deficit amid threat from Trump's tariffs

Japan sank into a trade deficit of 2.2 trillion yen (€13 billion) for the first six months of this year, according to government data released Thursday, as exports were hit by President Donald Trump's tariffs. In June, Japan's exports slipped 0.5% from a year earlier, following a 1.7% drop in May. Japan's exports to the US declined by 11% in June, with auto exports plunging 26.7%. (The US slapped car imports with a 25% tariff in April.) Shipments to China decreased by nearly 5%. Exports to Mexico, a major auto assembly hub for North America for Japanese automakers, fell nearly 20%. Trump has postponed implementing that higher import duty until 1 August, to allow time for negotiations, but so far no deal has been reached. Japan exports in June totalled nearly 9.2 trillion yen (€53 billion), in the second straight month of declines. As imports rose slightly by 0.2%, the trade surplus came in at 153 billion yen (just over €890 million), following a trade deficit in May amounting to 637.6 billion yen, or €3.7bn. Related Spain overtakes Japan in GDP per capita - what is behind the numbers? Nissan is closing flagship Oppama plant in Japan to cut costs In the first half of the year, Japan's exports totalled 53.4 trillion yen (€310bn), up 3.6%, while imports rose 1.3% to 55.6 trillion yen (€320bn). Japan and the US have been holding trade talks, with Japanese officials stressing that Japan is a key US ally. Customs data shows that, based on value, nearly one-fifth of all exports were heading to the US in 2024, making a trade deal crucial for the country's economy. Trump has focused on rice, a sector traditionally protected from foreign competition for the sake of Japan's food security. Japan imports more than 300,000 tons of rice a year from the US, according to various data, although some of that is used for animal feed. Japan will hold an election for the Upper House of Parliament on Sunday. Given falling public support for Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's administration, the conservative and pro-business ruling Liberal Democratic Party could lose its majority unless it gains another coalition partner. Japan's economy contracted in the first quarter of this year compared to the previous quarter, partly due to slowing exports. Following the latest export figures, concerns are mounting that the export-dependent Japanese economy is going to contract again in the second quarter, and the country will land in a recession.
