Two dead, 32 injured in temple stampede in UPs Barabanki
The incident occurred at the Avsaaneshwar temple in the Haidergarh area during the holy month of Shravan on Monday when devotees had gathered at the temple for 'jalabhishek' (offering water as a ritual). The electric current spread through the tin shed as the wire fell, triggering panic and a stampede in the temple premises.
Prashant (22) from the Mubarakpura village under the Lonikatra police station area and another 30-year-old devotee succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at the Trivediganj Community Health Centre (CHC), officials said.
A total of 10 injured persons were brought to Trivediganj CHC, of whom five were referred to higher medical centres due to their critical condition.
Meanwhile, 26 injured devotees are being treated at the Haidergarh CHC, and one of them has been referred for advanced care due to serious injuries.
Following the incident, there was chaos in the temple and surrounding areas. District and police officials reached the spot and are working to manage the situation. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.
Barabanki District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi said that during the 'jalabhishek' ritual, monkeys had damaged an electric wire, which caused current to flow through three tin sheds in the temple complex.
The resulting panic led to a stampede in which two people lost their lives and more than two dozens were injured, he added.

No helmet, no petrol in Indore district from Aug 1
Indore, July 30 (PTI) Beginning August 1, two-wheeler riders without helmets will not be allowed to refuel at petrol pumps in Indore district, a move aimed at curbing violation of traffic rules, officials said. An order to this effect was issued on Wednesday. The order followed directions issued by the chairman of the Road Safety Committee of the Supreme Court and former judge Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre at a meeting held on Tuesday. Justice Sapre (retired) instructed that a campaign should be launched in Indore to ensure two-wheeler riders wear helmets and passengers fasten seat belts in cars. 'In view of these instructions, we have issued a restrictive order stating that from August 1, two-wheeler drivers without helmets will not be given petrol at fuel pumps in the district," Indore district magistrate Ashish Singh told reporters. The violation of the order, issued under section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code 2023, will attract legal action against the concerned petrol pump, which includes imprisonment up to one year or a fine up to Rs 5,000 or both. The Madhya Pradesh High Court recently expressed its displeasure over the blatant violation of traffic rules on the streets of Indore, stressing the need to take strict steps. Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Pradeep Sharma stated that 32 lakh vehicles, including about 16 lakh two-wheelers, were registered under various categories in Indore district since 1950. He said that approximately 21 lakh vehicles are currently running on roads in Indore district. Two held for running away with hired video shooting equipment
Palghar, Jul 30 (PTI) The Mira Bhayandar Vasai Virar (MBVV) police in the district has arrested two men for allegedly stealing a video camera and other shooting equipment after hiring it by providing false names. The stolen equipment worth Rs 11 lakh was recovered from the possession of accused Rudra Koli (20, resident of Panvel) and Vivek Singh (24, resident of Navi Mumbai), said an official release here. The crime branch Unit-3, Virar, apprehended the accused from Nerul in Navi Mumbai on Monday, it said. The duo had allegedly hired the equipment for a day from the complainant by providing false names. On July 22, the complainant was travelling with them to the spot where a shoot was supposedly arranged. 'During the investigation, it was found that the car bore a fake number plate. Over 100 CCTV footage clips from areas like Bhiwandi, Thane, and Navi Mumbai were analyzed," the MBVV police said. Allahabad HC Grants Bail To Sambhal Mosque Committee Chief Accused Of Mob Violence
Last Updated: The incident, which unfolded during a civil court-ordered inspection of a mosque in Sambhal, saw a crowd of 700-800 people reportedly damage public property The Allahabad High Court on July 24 granted bail to Zafar Ali, the chairman of the Sambhal Jama Masjid Committee, who was accused of playing a key role in a violent mob protest that disrupted a court-mandated mosque survey in November 2024. The incident, which unfolded during a civil court-ordered inspection of a mosque in Sambhal, saw a crowd of 700-800 people reportedly damage public property, including police vehicles. Though the FIR named other individuals as primary instigators, Ali was not originally listed as an accused. However, following his public allegations against the police over unrelated deaths during earlier unrest in Sambhal, Ali was arrested on March 23 this year after appearing before the police in response to a statutory notice. He was subsequently booked under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 230 and 231, which carry the possibility of life imprisonment. The bench of Justice Sameer Jain questioned the strength of the evidence against Ali, noting that while the prosecution claimed he was 'instrumental" in the protest due to his position in the mosque committee, there was no material on record proving he took part in the violence. Ali's counsel argued that he was being targeted for publicly holding the police accountable for the deaths of four individuals during unrest in March 2025. The court appeared to take this into account, observing that the inclusion of graver charges appeared to follow Ali's public statements, rather than being based on fresh evidence. The co-accused named in the FIR, including Zia-Ur-Rahman Barq, were not arrested following a prior order of the high court, applying the Supreme Court's Arnesh Kumar guidelines. Another accused, Suhail Iqbal, was cleared during investigation. The prosecution could not provide cogent evidence linking Ali to the offences under Sections 230 and 231 BNS. The judge noted that the allegations were largely verbal and unsupported by admissible material. Given that Ali had been in custody for over four months and the charge sheet had already been filed, the court granted bail, stating that continued detention would serve no purpose and that an accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Ali has been released on personal bond and two sureties, subject to conditions restraining him from tampering with evidence or influencing witnesses.
