In a shocking incident, at least 15 people were injured after a double-decker bus collided with a low bridge in the UK's Manchester area, tearing off its roof. Three people sustained serious injuries, with one in critical condition.
The vehicle crashed at the junction of Barton Road and Trafford Road in Eccles, Salford, at about 15:00 BST (7:30 pm Indian time) on Monday, according to the Greater Manchester Police. Dramatic footage emerged on social media showing the roof of the bus being torn off as 'screaming sounds" were heard.
The North West Ambulance Service said 15 people were treated at the scene and then taken to the hospital. A large number of paramedics, including an air ambulance, reached the spot and cordoned off the area, according to the BBC.
'The trust dispatched a number of resources, including ten emergency ambulances, advanced paramedics, our Hazard Area Response Team (HART) and colleagues from North West Air Ambulance," said the spokesperson for the service. 'NWAS treated 15 patients who were all taken to Salford Royal or Manchester Royal Infirmary hospitals."
'It was horrific, I'm still in shock," said Stacey Morley, who lives near the scene of the crash. 'I just feel sorry for the people and their families."
'It probably two minutes before I got there," a witness told Manchester Evening News. 'I could just hear screaming coming from the top of the bus."
Szymon Hundz, who lives in a flat overlooking the road where the crash took place, said his girlfriend saw the bus go under the bridge and two people falling out of the top floor of the vehicle. 'It was a really loud explosion sound. We rushed down to bring chairs and water and stuff for people, we were trying to find any medical supplies from the neighbours while paramedics weren't there," he told BBC.
Transport Commissioner for Greater Manchester Vernon Everitt said an 'immediate and urgent" investigation into how the crash happened was underway. 'This is clearly a distressing situation for everyone involved, and we'd like to thank emergency services for their swift response," he added.
A bus had previously had its roof ripped off after striking the same bridge in April 2023.

Govt bans over 20 OTT platforms including Ullu, ALTT, Desiflix for ‘obscene content'
In a bid to crack down on unlawful and obscene content, the government has directed Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to disable public access to over 20 OTT platforms, including big and popular names like Ullu, ALTT, and Desiflix. A notification issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) emphasised that the intermediaries are responsible for removing or disabling access to unlawful information under the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. It said the move is aimed at curbing the dissemination of content that is deemed sexually explicit and violative of Indian legal and cultural standards. The banned apps include Big Shots App, Boomex, Navarasa Lite, Gulab App, Kangan App, Bull App, Jalva App, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, Hitprime, Feneo, ShowX, Sol Talkies, Adda TV, HotX VIP, Hulchul App, MoodX, NeonX VIP, Fugi, Mojflix, Triflicks. These have been found in violation of various laws, including Section 67 and Section 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, Section 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. The government has explicitly directed Internet Service Providers to disable or remove public access to these websites within India. 'MIB has also intimated to the Director (DS-II), Department of Telecommunications, with a request to facilitate compliance by the ISPs,' as per media reports, and the action shows the government's commitment to enforcing digital content regulations and ensuring adherence to the laws in the country. In April, the Supreme Court responded to a petition calling for a ban on sexually explicit content on OTT and social media. 'It's not our domain, you do something,' the SC said. However, the Justices also highlighted the need for executive action, with the Solicitor General indicating existing regulations and further measures under consideration.
