O's, Guardians look to jumpstart playoff push in 4-game set
The pitching matchup in the opener will be a rematch of a 6-2 Baltimore home win on April 17, when the Orioles' Tomoyuki Sugano (7-5, 4.44 ERA) got the better of fellow right-hander Tanner Bibee (5-9, 4.29).
The Guardians improved their wild-card hopes when they came out of the All-Star break with two wins in three home games against the Athletics. Cleveland twice scored eight runs in the series after having scored eight or more just seven times while going 46-49 before the break.
"We've had a great stretch here," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt observed to reporters as his team was running its best stretch of the season to eight wins in 10 games. "We just have to continue to work, continue to work to have good at-bats every single night."
Eight more runs of support no doubt would be appreciated by Bibee, who saw his teammates put up a total of just 23 runs in his team-high nine losses in the first half of the season.
The right-hander snapped a personal five-decision losing streak in his final start before the break, limiting the Chicago White Sox to two runs in 5 2/3 innings in a 6-2 win on July 12.
The 26-year-old was roughed up for six runs in 5 2/3 innings in the earlier loss at Baltimore, surrendering home runs to Gunnar Henderson on his eighth pitch of the game and later to Ryan O'Hearn and Heston Kjerstad. It leveled his career record against Baltimore at 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in two starts.
The Orioles flew into Cleveland a little later than expected Sunday night, the result of a rain delay during their 5-3 win at Tampa Bay that prevented a three-game sweep.
Sitting four games farther back in the AL wild-card chase than the Guardians, Baltimore got a strong effort from starting pitcher Trevor Rogers against the Rays on Sunday as a springboard to snapping a four-game losing streak.
The Orioles will be hoping for more of the same from Sugano, a rookie in American baseball whose extensive experience in Japan taught him that if something's not working, fix it.
The 35-year-old, bombed for 13 runs over 9 2/3 innings in his previous two starts as some speculated he'd hit a rookie wall, shook things up in his last outing against the New York Mets on July 10 and came away with a 7-3 win.
"Tomo's making adjustments," manager Tony Mansolino disclosed to reporters after Sugano's six-inning, three-run effort. "The league has adjusted to him, and he's got to kind of adjust back. We're proud of him."
The right-hander recorded his second major league win against the Guardians in April, allowing two runs in seven innings. The only runs were the product of back-to-back solo home runs by Daniel Schneemann and Austin Hedges.

Maria Sharapova 'puts LA mansion with bowling alley and stunning views on the market for £18.5MILLION!' As ex-tennis star and British fiance Alexander Gilkes 'set sights on European return'
Former tennis star Maria Sharapova has reportedly put her extravagant Los Angeles mansion up for sale for a whopping £18.5million. The five-time Grand Slam winner is ready to move out of the luxury home - which boasts an indoor bowling alley and gorgeous sea views - after 13 years, a report has claimed. Sharapova is engaged to British businessman Alexander Gilkes, 46, and the couple are understood to be keen on moving to Europe, the Sun has claimed. According to the Wall Street Journal, the minimalist Japanese-inspired home - fit with exposed concrete walls and a large pool - is up for sale for £18.5m. The 38-year-old showed off her extraordinary home in an interview with Architectural Digest in 2019 and hailed the 'indoor-outdoor' feel she was able to achieve in its design. On her striking pool, placed right outside the dining area, she said: 'Usually you have a pool and then a lawn and then a home. But I wanted the pool really close to the home. 'I didn't want that space between, I wanted to see the water from kitchen so getting it a close as possible to the home was a challenge but we managed it.' Elsewhere, Sharapova's pad includes a second-floor balcony which provides stunning views across Los Angeles, with Catalina Island visible in the distance. The former Wimbledon champion rocketed to fame when she beat top seed and defending champion Williams 21 years ago to win her first Grand Slam at just 17. During her storied time on court, Sharapova become the first Russian player to complete the career Grand Slam after wins in Melbourne, New York, Paris and London and the third-youngest woman to triumph at Wimbledon. But her career was marred by a 2016 failed drugs test, which saw Sharapova suspended for two years after she was found to have ingested meldonium, a substance which had been banned at the start of that year, ahead of the Australian Open. Her suspension was later reduced to 15 months after she was found to have taken the drug as per her doctor's advice, and Sharapova returned to competition in April 2017, and won the Tianjin Open seven months later. After struggling with chronic shoulder issues for a number of years, Sharapova announced her retirement in 2020, sharing an emotional goodbye message with her followers that spoke to her deep connection to the game. Maria and Alexander first started dating in 2018 just two years after Alexander - who has deep royal ties - ended his seven year marriage to Meghan Markle's best friend Misha Nonoo. Trump threatens to block stadium build over name
President Donald Trump has threatened to block a deal for the Washington Commanders' new stadium if the American football team does not revert back to their original US president said in a post on Truth Social on Sunday that a "big clamouring" exists for the "'Washington Whatever's" to change back to the "Redskins" and claimed it would make the team "more valuable".The NFL team dropped the name 'Redskins' in July 2020 after a review as it was long considered racist and offensive to Native Americans. They were called the 'Washington Football Team' during the 2020 season before changing to the Commanders in April, a deal was agreed for the Commanders to build a new $4bn (£3bn), 65,000-seater stadium at the site where RFK Stadium - their home from 1961 to 1997 - still week, DC Council were urged to speed up approving the stadium, external plans by a top Republican wrote: "I may put a restriction on them that if they don't change the name back to the original 'Washington Redskins' and get rid of the ridiculous moniker 'Washington Commanders' I won't make a deal for them to build a stadium in Washington. "The team would be much more valuable and the deal would be more exciting for everyone."In February this year, Trump made history when he became the first sitting president of the USA to attend the Super Bowl as the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22. Trump also urged Major League Baseball side the Cleveland Guardians to change their name back to the Cleveland Indians, having changed it in 2021."Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen," Trump said. "Their heritage and prestige is systematically being taken away from them."Guardians team president Chris Antonetti told The Athletic: "Not something I'm tracking or paying a lot of attention to."But I would say generally, I understand there are very different perspectives on the decision we made a few years ago. It's a decision we made and we've gotten the opportunity to build the brand as the Guardians over the last four years and we're excited about the future."
